Stupid Question (but this is my first car so i don't know squat). Can someone explain the difference in intake types. I checked the forum and couldn't find anything on this, but i could be blind... I'd like to buy an intake, but I don't know the difference between CAIs vs Short Rams etc etc etc. Could someone help me out and possibly suggest a type/company? Thanks

Two Main Types

Short Ram Air Intake vs. Cold Air Intake

Basically, both will give you net HP increases however typically the cold air intake gives you more net gains for one reason, it draws cold air into the engine.

Cold air takes up less volume than hot air. Example: hot air balloons... they don't blow cold air into hot air balloons because hot air expands, cold air contracts per se or occupies less volume. In an engine cylinder, when colder air is drawn into the cylinder via the intake -> throttle body -> intake manifold, that means there is more room in the cylinder (combustion chamber) for fuel. Colder air ---> more fuel = more combustible substance ---> more combustible substance ----> more POWER.

Design wise, both intakes will pretty much eliminate all your stock OEM air boxes and so on except for your flow meter. The short ram intake draws air from the engine bay so the air is significantly hotter than air drawn from a cold air intake which comes from locations such as the fenderwell where air doesn't have the opportunity to become heated from the engine.

So, the filters on cold air intakes typically are located in fenderwells and on short rams they are located inside the engine compartment.
