: Help on header install
thajaymann 01-25-2004, 12:36 PM I need help...
I have 5 and a half hours left to finish installing my headers.
I'm finished with the front header install... now I am starting the back manifold removal closest to the firewall.
I can't remove the heat shield....I've had my car two years and those things are solid....I removed the front ones because I had more leverage...should I take off my upper manifold to get to them?
tiburondriver47 01-25-2004, 12:46 PM We didn't have to but they were hard to get off. Just keep prying, twisting and pulling and hopefully they come out. Wish i could be of more help. I had the use of a hoist so that made it easier.
Dopey 01-25-2004, 02:22 PM PB Blaster is your friend...... ;)
Dingleweed 01-25-2004, 03:11 PM You could try locking two wrenches together to get more leverage...

Or, maybe soak a rag or tissue with WD-40 and reach up there and squeeze it out all over the bolts, and let it soak a bit.
Ryloth 01-25-2004, 03:23 PM Those are just a pain. I had to put my arm down from the top left part of the engine and twist and from underneth. Just keep trying.
ron169 01-25-2004, 03:33 PM Yeah removing the IM doesnt help much, I did it to install the Stage 3 at the same time as the headers, but they didnt help too much at all
thajaymann 01-25-2004, 03:44 PM thanks guys...
thajaymann V.S. Manifold.....winner: Manifold.
Yeah I guess I got my a$$ handed to me by the heat shield...I tried too much..and I didnt want to further strip the bolt.
I've decided to leave it to my shop to deal with. I put on the front header and it looks bad ass. But the rear one will have to wait for the pros.
Since my belt is loose and I have one header and one manifold on my car there is no way I am driving the tib. I'm going to have it towed to a shop... :'(
And of course there is the labor charge which I wish I would of payed in the first place. Now I have to pay for the install + tow + have my AC recharged ( i discharged it on accident) + I have to purchase a new O2 sensor for the front header...I cut the bottom ones wire while trying to get it off the stock front manifold. Do you know how much a new O2 sensor runs for?
Thanks for all your help. :D
Tibmeister 01-25-2004, 04:42 PM No no man, don't give up. Seriously, it can be done. Getting the heat sheilds off were the easiest part to me. I did the Stage 2 upgrade, so my manifold was off. Take it off and it will be easier.
Once the manifold is off, get on the side of your car with a ratchet and take that sucker off. Seriously, if it the right size, you won't strip it. Spray them with WD-40 before you start to take them off too. You could use a breaker bar with a ratchet attatchment. I found that to be easy and I didn't strip anything. Don't give up!
Tibmeister 01-25-2004, 04:42 PM PS... this is why I say a CAR TECH FORUM would be useful ;)
StreetShark 01-25-2004, 04:48 PM Dear god.. this kid isnt going to tow it to a shop over a heat shield is he? If so id like to crown this kid "biggist quitter in the world"
ruger11mcrdpi 01-25-2004, 05:57 PM I am one of those... screw-it-im-not-gonna-stop-now type people. On my elantra, I decided to take the front corners off and do the clear corner mod like you tiburon guys do. lol. I thought there was a screw under the corners I couldn't get to. SO I had to take the front radiator cover off. Then I found out I had to go from underneath. I jacked the car up, and found the bumper was in the way. I went to take the bumper off. Only problem is that the wheel well covers block a bumper screw. So I had to take the right wheel off, then the fender well covers, then the left wheel, and the left fenderwell cover and then kill a black widow nest which has sprung up in my fender. So now I have the whole front end basically off my car, my dad thinks i'm nuts and fully expects to have to call the shop to fix the car, and I found out that the corner lights just pop off once you unscrew 1 screw, I was just afraid to pull that hard, thinking there was a bottom screw.
moral? DONT QUIT....
thajaymann 01-25-2004, 06:21 PM no I'm not just going to take it too the shop for the heat shield....I'm going to have them install the rest...
and yes...I am lazy...and I give up easily...I like to try..but I like the easy way out. :)

wajoubaz_tib 03-19-2004, 07:55 AM I did my CAI, and My Clear corners alone.. i think i can do the headers to HOPEFULLY!!!
Red2.0Tib 03-19-2004, 08:39 AM A breaker bar is your friend!
Ryloth 03-19-2004, 09:24 AM whats up with bringing back a post thats two months old?
imrayzor666 03-20-2004, 05:35 PM Dude, the heat shields bend so easily. Just get some pliers squeezed up there and start folding and cutting. Not like you're gonna put them back on with the headers! Also, I couldn't get all four O2 sensors to fit, so I only installe dthe top two leaving me with two "spares". I don't know if that would work, but definitely worth a try before the money for a new one.
