: Should i make alternator pulleys?
Nick Boers 01-26-2004, 12:23 AM From what i saw before, it looked like a lot of people were interested in lightweight alternator pulleys to complement their underdrive pulley.
Expected gains would be about 1hp. There are zero possible side effects to this mod, except it looks cool too.
Price will be about $80 CAD (roughly $60 USD) with shipping. These will also likely come laser engraved as well, just for kicks.
First, is there people interested? Should i do this?
Second, anyone local willing to stop by for an hour or so to get some measurements? You'll get an excellent deal for your time.
Solo2Tib 01-26-2004, 12:30 AM So what kinda gains would we expect?
pr1ck 01-26-2004, 12:58 AM and would this affect the car negatively?
Nick Boers 01-26-2004, 01:22 AM I edited the original post, about 1hp, zero possible negative effects.
ilbravo 01-26-2004, 01:58 AM if i remember correctly from the previous forum, didn't you make an underdrive pulley for the I4 or also for the V6?
just curious
FishesTib 01-26-2004, 02:01 AM once i start getting an income again i may be up for one
adeihl 01-26-2004, 02:05 AM I am interested in all accessory pullys
Andrew
TruTrent 01-26-2004, 02:06 AM nice.
how about a 'lil more style to them?
i love the function of my underdrive, but maybe the alternator with lightening holes in it?
flymikeair 01-26-2004, 02:44 AM I'd be up for one if you make them.
ron169 01-26-2004, 02:46 AM I want all accessories, and all underdriven to equal out the affects of the Crank underdrive
Ibbanez 01-26-2004, 02:50 AM I to would be interested in all accessory pullies. But if just this one I would still do it. So yeah go ahead and make em.
Solo2Tib 01-26-2004, 03:07 AM Everyone does realize where the alternator pulley is?
Ibbanez 01-26-2004, 05:15 AM ummm, on the alternator...haha j/k. But what do you mean by where it is? Are you reffering to getting to it? If so then I would worry to terribly alot because I moved it when installing my headers. But others may see where its located and freak out.
ins-tib-ility 01-26-2004, 08:20 AM i'm up for one
GrAsShOpPeR 01-26-2004, 08:27 AM I am up for any lightweight pully. I am interested in keeping the stock size though. I am happy with the stock size crank pulley you sold me.
Bass_Droppa 01-26-2004, 09:49 AM $80 is alot of money for 1hp, but I will DEFINITELY be hitting u up for your underdrive w/in the next 2 months...
decker 01-26-2004, 10:01 AM $80 is alot of money for 1hp, but I will DEFINITELY be hitting u up for your underdrive w/in the next 2 months...
Its actually $60 USD, Nick's canadian and he quoted $80 CDN.
The pulley is not just for performance, i think its to compliment the underdrive so your alternator still generates the correct amount of powa (correct me if i'm wrong nick). I just received the underdrive this weekend and its well worth the money. I haven't put it on but the workmanship is pretty impressive.
Nick i'd be up for one if you make it.
Samba_GS-R 01-26-2004, 10:03 AM You know me nick, always up to be your test *****!
Dingleweed 01-26-2004, 10:24 AM Nick, I'll buy any pulley you make! ;)
*Edit*
To answer the question of where the alternator pulley is, well here it is

Suprgtrs_man 01-26-2004, 10:59 AM Yeah, make PS pulley also.
panthertiburon 01-26-2004, 11:02 AM i would be up for stoppin by for you to take measurements...always nice to meet a fellow toronto tib owner....also, would this just be a lighter pulley, or would the size change as well....? cuz if the size chjanges, then a new belt would once again be required....well let me know....
Nick Boers 01-26-2004, 12:03 PM It would be stock size, so it doesn't chamnge the speed of the alternator. I'll make it the slightly smaller of the two stock sizes. i think they're 59 and 57mm, but i'll check before i make them. Here' a pic of a Saturn alternator pulley i make.
http://members.rogers.com/nickboers/DCP_2745.JPG
It looks like i might be able to pull the pulley off th alternator without taking the alternator off. I'm HOPING i can. That would make it the easiest alternator pulley install ever :D
Keith03GT 01-26-2004, 12:11 PM I'd be interested in the alt. pulley, I also need the full size pulley you make too...do you still make them?
I'd want both in red.
panthertiburon 01-26-2004, 12:11 PM well if you need me to stop by for measurements...let me know...as long as it is the same size as the stock alternator pulley i would be interested...
philm00x 01-26-2004, 01:00 PM i'm up for one in anodized blue :D
TruTrent 01-26-2004, 01:38 PM he dingle, if your looking for a cheaper way to get another 1 hp , how about a pressure wash at the car wash! lol j/k bub.
JackMcNASTY 01-26-2004, 01:47 PM For those of us without the newer small pulley, it would be nice if you made it the smaller diameter so the alternator spins faster.
$80 for 1 hp. ewwwwwww....
detroitibby 01-26-2004, 02:12 PM choice in color?
DemonEyez 01-26-2004, 02:27 PM well i havnt really thought about it.. but if u make one where u gain more than 1 hp.. i'd be in. I dont need my alternator to work at 100% *compared to current* i'll be adding a second battery and 2 caps to my setup and shouldnt run into many problems.
Nick Boers 01-26-2004, 02:34 PM It's not very good HP/$ but it's been requested by many people, which is why i was thinking of doing them.
They'd come in different colours like the other pulleys.
I still have some full size pulleys in stock, and lots of underdrives.
ron169 01-26-2004, 02:39 PM I just want a full set of pullies. I know the underdrive has barely any problem with the alternator output, but after the TSB from Hyundai and the problems with alternators, I just want the smaller pulley, or maybe a lil smaller so that it will be at or above normal output. THe main reason I want a full set of pullies, minus the underdrive is the fact that they are beautifully crafted and I want them to be seen, unlike the current crank pulley that is near invisible. Also, Im the type of person that is looing for each and every HP possible, so a full set would maximize my gains, which is a good thing

Im with Ron on this one. I too want all of them. How hard would it be for you to make the power steering one and the likes. Thanks.
Nick Boers 01-26-2004, 05:08 PM A/C can't be done, it's got an integral clutch.
P/S can probably be done, i have to get another look at them.
Sleasy 01-26-2004, 05:13 PM Hyundai has a TSB out ight now about the pulley on the alternator. It seems they feel the stock pulley is too large in diam and it is causing the alternator to not put out enough juice. The fix is to install a smaller pulley. I would think you might want to check this situation out a little before you make an aftermarket alt pulley. Especially since a lot of guys buying this alt pulley mod may already have the underdrive pulley. Just my .02
Dingleweed 01-26-2004, 05:27 PM A/C can't be done, it's got an integral clutch.

P/S pulley would be really cool since it is right on top and you would be able to see it! Then after people's eyes are drawn to that, they would look down and see the crank and alternator pulley as well. It would make for a very nice looking engine compartment!
Sleasy 01-26-2004, 05:37 PM PS pulley would be great. Please make it just a shade smaller than stock though. I have "over-run" the power steering more than a few times when autoxing the Tib. Makes you get a little twitchy when you have a 180 deg turn with nothing but curb in front of you and the car's steering wheel doesn't want to turn as fast as you want it to.
Solo, you ever had this happen to you?
Ibbanez 01-26-2004, 06:14 PM Cool I cant wait to hear about the PS one also. It looks pretty easy to do and for ohers to be able to get to it. If you can make both I'll diffenately be in. Thanks.
Nick Boers 01-26-2004, 06:46 PM Yeah, i'm aware of the TSB from Hyundai on the alternator pulley, i was going ot make it the size of the new smaller one.
Sleasy 01-26-2004, 06:51 PM Even for underdriven crank pulleys? Glad you caught the TSB.
Dingleweed 01-26-2004, 07:06 PM Cool I cant wait to hear about the PS one also. It looks pretty easy to do and for ohers to be able to get to it. If you can make both I'll diffenately be in. Thanks.
Removing/replacing the P/S pulley is REALLY easy! Probably would take a total of 10 minutes, start to finish.
Freon 01-26-2004, 07:09 PM I'm interested. It would be nice to go a hair too small to get a bit more power (out of the alternator) at idle.
Ibbanez 01-26-2004, 10:05 PM And even if you make some of them a little smaller we'd still probably be able to use the belt that came with your underdrive pulley since its tight to begin with, right? When are you looking to do these? Thanks.
Nick Boers 01-26-2004, 10:59 PM I need a car to ,measure from, and i'll start right away.
ins-tib-ility 01-26-2004, 11:02 PM well once you've got all the measurements, i'm down for this and an underdrive crank pulley and probably a P/S pulley too
philm00x 01-26-2004, 11:10 PM okie now i decided no underdrive pulleys cuz i just found out they smaller than regular pulleys.. and that could be bad... so.. what ya should do is make regular size pulleys. like the power, water, alternator, etc and in anodized blue so i can buy em from u ;) :D !
ins-tib-ility 01-26-2004, 11:18 PM okie now i decided no underdrive pulleys cuz i just found out they smaller than regular pulleys.. and that could be bad... so.. what ya should do is make regular size pulleys. like the power, water, alternator, etc and in anodized blue so i can buy em from u ;) :D !
hence the UNDERdrive...and he makes regular size crank pullies as well
Dingleweed 01-26-2004, 11:23 PM he dingle, if your looking for a cheaper way to get another 1 hp , how about a pressure wash at the car wash! lol j/k bub.
I just now read this. Actually, it is pretty funny!! Thanks for the laugh!
badradz 01-26-2004, 11:57 PM I might down for this
DemonEyez 01-27-2004, 12:50 AM hrm if u make a whole set.. i'll prolly take it just for the hell of it.. so go make em!
Ibbanez 01-27-2004, 02:10 AM Come on Samba hurry up and drive back over there damnit....
YellowTuscRcr 01-27-2004, 04:33 AM hey im up for new pullys. I could also stop by... in april lol cuz my car is stored for the winter. You could come here for the mesurments too :-\ but thats kina stupid lol.
GrAsShOpPeR 01-27-2004, 08:35 AM I have the stock size crank pulley and out of curiosity... why didn't you drill out holes in the flat surface like to did to the saturn pulley for additional weight reduction?
Nick Boers 01-27-2004, 10:31 AM The full size ones are just a scaled up version of the underdrive. Lightening holes would have cost extra machining time, and would have raised the price. The back wall is thin enough to be plenty strong, but not add too much weight.
panthertiburon 01-27-2004, 10:32 AM i could stop by, where abouts in toronto are you Nick, i could swing by on Sunday possibly....
BestRedRide 01-27-2004, 10:47 AM I'd be interested in any and all pulleys you'll make. I have your underdrive crank already, and would like to have matching pulleys, especially the more visible ones. :) Make 'em up!
Nick Boers 01-27-2004, 03:28 PM I'm actually in Pickering. Sunday would be fine.
i could stop by, where abouts in toronto are you Nick, i could swing by on Sunday possibly....
ron169 01-27-2004, 11:59 PM woohoooooo
SlightlyModified 01-28-2004, 01:45 AM I'd be down for a set of red anodized pullies. Count me in.
panthertiburon 01-28-2004, 09:51 AM ok, cool Nick....PM me your number and i will give you a call on Saturday so we can set up a meet on sunday....directions and time and stuff....i have always wanted to be a ginnie pig....lol what ever helps me get a deal... ;)
panthertiburon 02-02-2004, 03:20 PM sorry nick i didn't get your messege until this morning.....i will call you to set up another time...i know i will be out that way on the 13th of feb....let me know if that is good...ttyl
MrPhotoman 05-11-2004, 07:50 PM What ever happened to these? Do you make them now?
