How to soundproof your car for FREE

okay so i was asked by a guy at work that wants to soundproof his S10 if there was a cheaper way to soundproof than dynomat which would run him 140 bucks...

i thought for a second and suggested he do ebay or jokingly newspaper lol
then about 5 minutes later after thinking about newspaper i started to think that it might
actually work...
so we started to talk some more about it and it seemed like the cheapest possible way and it was worth a shot
i googled it and came up with nothing so i figured i would go store to store and get newspapers
and attempt it myself i was bored
i ended up going to a little newspaper recycle place in my area and got a whole bunch and started away

i would take one sheet at a time, crinkle it up and place it around my spare, in the rear side panels, the whole trunk and under the two seat conversion
the whole process took about 30 minutes
so i put everything back together and it looked exactly as it did before and took for a test drive..

i noticed a difference as soon as i started her up
and driving is completely different
throughout the rpm range there is no vibration of my sunglass holder or other random stuff
i used to have really bad cabin drone and the exhaust was really loud(custom flowmaster setup)
i would estimate it to now be approximately 65% quieter

it may seem ghetto or retarded to some but my boring night turns into someone else's free soundproofing so i figure i would share
thanks,
rob

Re: How to soundproof your car for FREE

Only thing i'd be worried about it Fire...Dynamat and other Soundproof cr*p is flame-resistant (i think) but. If all your wiring is stock or EXTREMELY good. WHy not...I may actaully have to try this..I have HORRIBLE road noise....huh...nice, nice

Re: How to soundproof your car for FREE

It does make it somewhat of a fire hazard if even wiring were to short out and cause a spark, or who knows what, but you said its temporary.

Try gutter tape from home depot. It's very close to dynamat but only $15 for like an 8" diameter roll of the stuff. One roll is enough to do both front doors on a tib, just to give you an idea of how much would be involved. Not free but cheap and effective.

Re: How to soundproof your car for FREE

i no longer have any subs or anything
i got into weight reduction so i don't have to worry about anything shorting out and causing fire
but good point for anyone that tries this and does

Haha hells yeah, more home Depot modding. Got to love it.

Newspaper idea makes sense that it'd work, still seems kinda funny though.

If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all..... this site really tests my patience with that one.

Re: How to soundproof your car for FREE

insulation, like in the wall of houses works better than news paper, spray foam for the small gaps and spots you just can't get into, and the worst and most ghetto of all, roofing tar.
