Newcombe Racing Tiburon Build Thread

This is not my car but its a Race Car I'm currently rebuilding for Jonathan Newcombe Racing. I'm going to use this thread to document my progress on it. I'm half way through the build so your kind starting in the middle of the season. lol

Here we go!

Jonathan's previous configuration was a built V6 pushing around 450whp in a race chassis that was originally built back in 01 by a Canadian race team. This car has some SERIOUS suspension mods most of us can only dream about. During his last race with the Tiburon it looks like the head lifted and starting an engine fire basically ruining everything in the engine bay. This was before I was involved and from what I can tell the failure was due to the AEM Infinity having zero engine protections and the engine blowing at 8300 RPM!!

Here's a pic of the carnage.

Jonathan had decided to switch over to the 2.0L Iron Block engine for reliability at higher boost levels so that's where I joined the team since I have extensive knowledge of the 4 banger.

Here's the car being delivered Santa Style to my place.

Here's a pic of the engine bay as delivered. Boy have I got my work cut out for me!

Here's a pic of the fried engine harness!

Here's a pic of how the engine bay currently looks! BIG improvement!!

Here's a pic of current progress of rebuilding the entire engine/chassis harness. Looks fun huh?

Re: Newcombe Racing Tiburon Build Thread

FYI for those that buy those ARP Flywheel bolts you need to shave about 1/8" off the top of them to work with the Beta 2 crank. They are designed for the 4B11T in the Gen Coupe so they are a tad longer.

Here's the Hydraulic TOB installed

and then the ClutchMasters Twin Disc loveliness!!

and finally motor going into chassis. Ran into some issues with the difference between the V6 motor mounts and the 2.0L but those should be resolved shortly. And we also need to figure out how to adapt the 25 spline 2.0L axles to the V6 27 spline hubs.

Yeah, the Canadians did a great job on the chassis. Its actually got a full rool cage with door bars that connects to those strut tower braces through the firewall.

Re: Newcombe Racing Tiburon Build Thread

Pic added of turbo mockup. For those of you thinking of using an EVO8/9 manifold be prepared for A LOT of massaging of the exhaust stud holes. You will need a really good cutting bit and lots of patience.

Oh and in case you didn't notice the turbo compressor housing butts up right against the crankshaft position sensor not allowing a connector to squeeze in. Solution? Rejigger a V6 sensor that has the pigtail attached.

Nice, sounds like quite a build. I'm interested to know what clutchmasters sent you to use to mount the hydraulic throw out bearing? Did they include a mounting plate / adapter?

Re: Newcombe Racing Tiburon Build Thread

Yup! Mounting plate included with kit. This is 1 of 2 known Clutchmasters Twin Discs for the 2.0l in existence and needless to say it was not cheap. They did say if people were interested in a group buy they would lower the price...but even then it's still not cheap. lol

Awesome, I have the same clutch which has been sat in the garage for about a year now as I've been waiting for my custom gearset to be manufactured before installing. I can't quite tell from your photo but the tob setup I received from clutchmasters consists of an oem tob sleeve which the hydraulic bearing slides over then just one mounting bolt is used for securing. It will be interesting to see how you get on, best of luck with the build

Fair play, well not that I'm trying to rush you or anything... I'm just waiting patiently for my next dose of car porn

On a different note, are you going with uprated head studs and crank bearings? It's just I see but some people using ARP hardware / ACL bearings and I've been trying to gauge whether it's worth the investment when I build my new engine.

What kind of rev limiter are you going with? I guess with the high lift cams and new springs 7500rpm should be achievable and still within your power band?

One more question... When you ordered the rods apparently there are two different types for the beta II as some cranks have a different radius. How do you distinguish which you have?

Re: Newcombe Racing Tiburon Build Thread

For the Beta 2 you need these.. HYN-200-480-1461F TIBURON 2.0L TBO G4CP G4GF from Pauter. Its the ones with the larger radius.

For rev limit we will most likely determine that based on what speed Jonathan can get to in 4th gear. I'm guessing somewhere in between 7300-7400 RPM.

For the power levels we're going to shoot for in the future I went with all ARP hardware for the crank and head. If we were going to stay around the 400whp mark I would've stayed with stock stuff but the plan, once we get a sequential tranny, is to shoot for 600+ whp.

I couldn't source all the ACL bearings I needed so we went with King racing coated tri metal bearings. Should be just as good.

Yup, stock EVO 8/9 has a twin scroll. Only ATP Turbo has a twinscroll GTX3076R that will mount to it though so be prepared to fork over the cash!

Updated pics.. motor is done.

small update above. I'll hopefully have the twin disc, motor and tranny mated up and installed in the chassis this weekend!

To do:
Fabricate Power Steering and Fuel lines to replace the ones toasted by the fire
Fabricate 4" Turbo Intake Pipe
Fabricate turbo to intercooler pipe
Get a basic idle and driving MAP built in the infinity ECU

Sounds like you've made good progress this week The larger throttle body will make a massive difference, I went for a 75mm Bosch e-throttle in the end. Thanks for letting me know about the ARP flywheel bolts, I'll be ordering a set of those tonight. Did you have to order the head / main ARP hardware separately?
