Hmmm.. Maybe you'll be lucky and placed in a Fighter program to become a Crew Chief. That would be awesome. Anything you get mechanic-wise won't be bad. I work for an Air Logistics Center now as a civilian, the AF mechanics have it pretty good.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

From the jobs listed under "Mechanical" on the AF Career page, I came up with these as my top choices..

Air Traffic Control Operations
Aircraft Armament Systems <-My cousin does this and loves it .. but, it really doesn't have any place as a Civilian.
Aircraft Metals Technology
Nuclear Weapons
Air Transportation

LOL. That's mild...

At Ft. Jackson reception, we had one guy try to get out for being crazy by throwing beds out the windows. Another guy tried to get out for being suicidal and jumped out of one of the upstairs windows. It worked, they went to the looney bin...

ha yeah the military does not take suicide lightly either. people that try to get out by saying they are suicidal or try to do something that is concidered suicidal dont get to just go home.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

You will get deployed as often as any other person.. No way to really tell that. They are drawing back and reducing forces, so deployments will be reduced. On base, you'll either be sitting in a patrol car watching traffic, in the MP office, or at an entrance gate checking IDs. Very stable and easy job on an Army base.

Every few months you'll probably do a couple days in the "field" to pracitce security practices and whatnot.

Warning: MOST peoples first duty station is either Korea or Germany. Korea is a solo station, as you can't bring your wife. Germany on the other hand, I believe one year is solo and after that you can have them there. Not sure if they have changed that or not, it's been quite a while since I was in.

All in all, the job is basically street cop/gate guard. It's mostly boring, but easy work though.

Good luck!

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

I also served as a Recruiter, but on the Navy side of the house. Yes 9 to 5 jobs sound nice and there are PLENTY of jobs that serve in that time frame but, also it IS the military and jobs in all of the uniformed services run through out the entire range of the clock. Especially serving at sea, but you also get extra money for being at sea and yes serving overseas as well. I have literally been around the world, saw a lot of great places that I never could have seen on my own. Did I have bad days? Yes. Did I have bad weeks? Yes. Did I have to stay awake longer than I wanted to at times? Yes. But, you easily can get the same treatment on the civilian side of the house as well and, you have already had that treatment, at times, if you really think about it. Where else can you start a career at the age of 17, retire from a job at the age of 37, with an immediate retirement paycheck and started your job with just a high school diploma? Crazy right? Well, I did and will get paid by the military for the rest of my life with lifetime medical and dental care to boot. Thanks to all those on here that have served, serving or are about to serve in the military

Korea changed it up and so did Germany..you can take a spouse to certain areas in Korea if you go for longer than 1 year...Germany, you can take your family regardless...but numerous bases have closed down there now, so it is becoming less of a likely first assignment. Most end up at hood, Lewis, or bragg now . I got lucky and had Germany, Qatar, and Hawaii while I was in...partially because I learned the system quick, and moved the pieces to work in my favor

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could provide additional info/insight on becoming an army ranger. Ive been training constantly for almost a year now (I felt the call like a kick in the nuts) and I have 3 more years of college to go before enlisting. How possible is it to become one without prior military experience? trust me im not one of those kids who think they're magically going to pass all the training and tests, I just have my heart set on doing something "elite".

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

Going in with a degree, you should be placed into the officer program. This will be a decision by you when you enlist. Instead of normal basic training, you will go to Officer Candidate School (OCS). It is basically basic training and officer leadership skills in one course instead of doing both. You will come out as a 2LT. If you don't take that route, you will enter into the Army as a Specialist (E4), based on your education points.

After OCS, you will have to pick what skill branch to go into, to be a Ranger, your best bet is Infantry (11 series). You will then be assigned to an Infantry company and learn all the skills they do.

If you take the enlisted route, you HAVE to pick Infantry (11B) before you even start the process. You will pick the job at MEPS and jobs avbailable to you will only be based on your ASVAB score. Infantry might not come up as a possible job. Basically, they will give you a list and if it isn't on there, you cannot go into that field for now. You will go through basic after this and get placed into an Infantry company, just like above.

Regardless of which route you enter the service:
Usually about once a year, Ranger Battalions have tryouts. They will come to your base and pretty much give you a fitness test that is way above the normal Army PT test. They usually take the top 10 scorers and offer them a chance to go to Ranger school. Pass Ranger school and your set.

Infantry is usally the field of choice when they pick. There is way more positions for them and their entrance schooling is better than anyone else in the Army. If you don't get in as Infantry, you can still do the tryouts like above. The slots they give to "off" positions is much lower though. Usually only the top 3 get a chance at Ranger school.

When you do enlist, if or if not you get infantry, try to get something that is combat arms (infantry type). They should give you an option at enlistment to go to Airborne and/or Air Assault school. You get both of those schools, you will pretty much be a shoe-in for Ranger school. You want to at least get Airborne school. You will have more advanced training and be in way better shape than someone without those schools.

Bascially you don't go in just to Ranger school, you need to be in the service first and attend one of their tryouts. Infantry with Airborne or Air Assault is the best way to go to get an easier selection.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

so basically if I go to OCS I will serve as an officer for awhile before a chance to become a ranger comes up? And i definitely had airborne/air assault in mind. Will we even be seeing action anymore now that we are withdrawing?

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

Yes, that's correct. You will have to serve until the Ranger selection chance arises. Rangers are SOCOM units. Don't think of what's going on in Iraq or Afghanistan as the only mission. There are places to go for special missions a lot of the time. Will you sit at a base for a year or so just training and doing nothing? Possibly. Will you deploy every 3 months on and off for special missions. Possibly. There is no real way to tell these days. It all depends on the needs of the Army and current mission goals.

Even sitting around base can be fun. Don't get me wrong. We use to do the obstacle courses, rope courses, water confidence courses and weapon tactics and shoot houses all the time. It's like a real life video game a lot of the time. All about building team/unit bonds and sharpen individual skills.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

Oh yea I understand I would much rather be sitting around a base with a bunch of good friends than in a cubicle from 9 to 5. One more question, should i go to OCS through the marines or the army? or would I not be able to go to airborne school through the marines? (marines being preferable until ranger training)

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

You cannot cross train like that. If you want to be an Army Ranger, you must be in the Army. The Marines have SF, controlled by MARSOC (part of SOCOM) and that is like being Army SF. Marines don't have Rangers and you won't even get a chance to cross over. Each branch stays in it's own realm, most the time. I say that because some of the courses are shared based on their job skills. Air Force and Army might have HazMat schooling together. Army, Marines and Air Force might be in Airborne school together. Those are usually special cases though.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

Mind you, all the forces are cutting back and realigning. Marines are getting out of ground combat and giving it mostly back to the Army. They will be focusing on Navy type training like when that branch came into service. Forces are going back to their roots, basically.

Marines - amphibious warfare
Army - land warfare
Navy - amphibious support and sea warfare
Air Force - air combat and services support

That's where everything is headed back to. Right now, you have everyone doing all types of combat and support for each branch. They are in the process of slimming down and going back to each of those tasks like originally assigned.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

I wouldn't be too concerned about BMT, they really toned down nowadays.

It's just as how people get nervous on the promotion board, afterwards you always wondered how you got hyped up in the first place.

I moved since my last post in this topic, and currently in Joint Base Lewis McChord (used to be Fort Lewis). The weather isn't very pleasing since it rains.....non stop. The ones I can't stand the most so far are Infantry grunts.... Dumbest people I've ever met in my 7 year military career.

Also to include....I hate Strykers. They're extremely prone to break down if not taken care of and the grunts...of course, makes things that much harder.

For anyone deciding to be a mechanic, stick with 91S rather 91B. The points for promotion is cut in half, and regardless if you're a Bravo, you'll still work on Strykers.

For those that don't know.

91B - Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic
91S - Stryker Systems Maintainer

I still don't understand why the Army just doesn't combine the two. I figured they did so with 63W's at the time.

And to touch up on one of the posts in 2006, this is NOT a normal 9-5 job. Not sure why you didn't factor in PT at 6:30. Depending on the unit is what depends on how hard PT can get. Since I'm stuck with an Infantry unit (4-2ID Stryker Brigade), they just want to run 2-6 miles a day and switch around with ruck marches between 4-12 miles.

Also depending on the MOS, your hours will change for either the better or worse. There are a lot of days when I work past 5pm, and field days especially. Back in Iraq, we were working 12-14 hours a day easily and there aren't any days off in Iraq. You get no weekends off.

Frequency of deployments will depend on your MOS. For me it was 1 year stateside, 1 year Korea, 1 year stateside, 1 year Iraq, 1 year stateside, and soon this winter I'm deploying to Afghanistan.

So basically, if you think being a Mechanic would be nice, don't get involved with the job in the military because the stress can be overwhelming.
