Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread
I wouldn't be too concerned about BMT, they really toned down nowadays.
It's just as how people get nervous on the promotion board, afterwards you always wondered how you got hyped up in the first place.
I moved since my last post in this topic, and currently in Joint Base Lewis McChord (used to be Fort Lewis). The weather isn't very pleasing since it rains.....non stop. The ones I can't stand the most so far are Infantry grunts.... Dumbest people I've ever met in my 7 year military career.
Also to include....I hate Strykers. They're extremely prone to break down if not taken care of and the grunts...of course, makes things that much harder.
For anyone deciding to be a mechanic, stick with 91S rather 91B. The points for promotion is cut in half, and regardless if you're a Bravo, you'll still work on Strykers.
For those that don't know.
91B - Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic
91S - Stryker Systems Maintainer
I still don't understand why the Army just doesn't combine the two. I figured they did so with 63W's at the time.
And to touch up on one of the posts in 2006, this is NOT a normal 9-5 job. Not sure why you didn't factor in PT at 6:30. Depending on the unit is what depends on how hard PT can get. Since I'm stuck with an Infantry unit (4-2ID Stryker Brigade), they just want to run 2-6 miles a day and switch around with ruck marches between 4-12 miles.
Also depending on the MOS, your hours will change for either the better or worse. There are a lot of days when I work past 5pm, and field days especially. Back in Iraq, we were working 12-14 hours a day easily and there aren't any days off in Iraq. You get no weekends off.
Frequency of deployments will depend on your MOS. For me it was 1 year stateside, 1 year Korea, 1 year stateside, 1 year Iraq, 1 year stateside, and soon this winter I'm deploying to Afghanistan.
So basically, if you think being a Mechanic would be nice, don't get involved with the job in the military because the stress can be overwhelming.
