Official Army recruiting/ Military Info thread

Ok. I know that there are folks on this site who are either interested in joining the military, or just interested in finding out more info. I decided that I would put this thread up to kinda give folks that boost they were looking for, and the info they want. All fellow military members feel welcome to post up info that can be useful to people on this site. Here's my tidbit to start.

Mind you, I am in the Army, so I can only give you my personal experience and knowledge on that.

-Up to $40,000 in for an enlistment bonus (at least until the end of this year)
-1 month paid leave every year
-Most holidays off under normal working conditions, and depending on location many 4-day weekends
-Pay raise every year
-Get to travel the world
-Your housing and food are paid for (pre-determined amounts based on rank and living area)
-Full benifits
-Free college while you are in, and potential for more when you get out
-Free training in many fields that can be used outside the military
-Military experience looks GREAT on a resume

And the best thing that most people don't realize....It's just a normal job
-Most of the time it's just a normal 9-5....except with many more benifits
-over 150 different jobs to choose from
-many advancement opportunities

Basic Qualifications to join
U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien

Healthy and in good physical condition

High school graduates with 30 to 59 college semester hours—$3,000

Qualified non-prior service applicants who enlist for three to six years may receive one of the following bonuses for civilian education:

Bachelor's degree—$4,000
Associate or two-year degree—$3,000
High school graduates with 60 or more college semester hours—$2,000
High school graduates with 30 to 59 college semester hours—$1,000

Civilian skills bonus

Qualified applicants who possess civilian skills that the Army needs—such as proficiency in certain foreign languages, X-Ray certification or specialties in animal care—may be eligible for a $5,000 bonus.

Qualified Army Reserve applicants who already have civilian skills that the Army Reserve needs and enlist for six years in a critical skill specialty may be eligible for a $10,000 bonus.

Up to $10,000 bonus payable upon successful completion of OCS training and commissioning.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military info thread

Well, everybody has the possibility of going to combat. But it's not like -you join, you go. It depends on the unit you go to, and your job. Some jobs get deployed more than others, just as some units do. The cool thing is, when you first enlist, you can have somewhat of a choice where you want5 to go most of the time. You just have to let the recruiter know that you know that, or they will not try and get it for you. There are plenty of jobs that have to do with computers. If there are any other specific questions you want to ask, by all means, feel free to post away.

PS....I edited your post to not contain my whole messages, lol.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military info thread

I joined the Army right out of High School. I told the Recruiter exactly what I wanted to do for a job or I wasn't signing up. I got the job I wanted. My military experience was exactly what I made of it. I truly believe its something everyone should experience. Ready2Play is correct in the majority of the time its a 9-5 job. If anyone is considering joining up, do your research and it helps to know what you want to do AFTER you get out.

You gotta be good to get in there. I'm not sure what it's called there in TX, but here it's called "allstate band'
If can make it to allstate then you can make it into the armed forces bands. No matter what job you choose, just make sure that you are ready to let someone else take over parts of your life, not that it's all bad,,,,but the armed forces is a job,,but it's also a major part of your life outside of that job. Make sure your wife is also ready, if you have one cause she'll have to be ready to move and go with you, same if you have kids.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military info thread

lol more recruiting. I get so many calls from the recruiters. They ask me what im doing, i say im in my second year of college. Then they ask my plans, and i tell them i am going to go to law school. Then they showboat the army/marines etc, as ask what i think of doing something like that. and my final sentence of the conversation is, did you not just hear me, IM GOING TO LAW SCHOOL.

Anyway, nice job on the list, just dont call my house

Nah.....I'm not doing this to try and harass anybody. Just trying to give those who have already had their interest about it sparked before, but never really knew anything about it (this is how I was). There aren't enough places to go and get first hand info on the subject.

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military info thread

I debated posting in this thread but feel for it to fair that I should. First let me preface my comments by saying I have the utmost respect for everyone in our armed forces and certainly appreciate the work, risk, etc involved. That being said, however I would like to add a few points.

While the money, training, and perks are great it is not fair to say that in most cases the military is just a normal 9 to 5 job. I have had many friends in numerous branches that would certainly not agree with that. You never know when your unit will be sent to the DMZ in Korea for instance. I had two friends who ended up there. They worked 16 hour days 6 days a week on average.

While it is true that just enlisting doesn't guarantee you a trip to Afghanistan or Iraq the odds are certainly high as the wars there stand currently. That may change in the near future but anyone enlisting now should be well aware that they might spend an indefinate amount of time in the Middle East.

I get sick days at my job. From my understanding of military "sick time" if you aren't vomiting wildly or delusional with 105 degree fever they more or less give you the walk it off attitude.

Also, the time off is ok, but there is little chance that you will get Christmas or Thanksgiving or your birthday off. Sometimes maybe, but don't count on it being a regular tradition.

Some people don't realize how much discipline, physical work, etc it takes to get through basic training and further. 6 inch squares and sheets you can bounce a quarter off of simply isn't realistic for some people. Now I understand things have changed over the years. There are stress cards and such, drill seargents are nicer, etc. but still it's not like a civilian job much of the time.

I could go on but people need to research for themselves. I just don't want someone looking at the military through rose colored glasses then getting to basic and realizing they made a huge mistake. I remember the recruiters that wouldn't leave me alone when I was a senior in high school back in the stone age. They could always list all the positives but you would never hear them say anything about some of the negatives. It was a sales job on their part. All they want is for you to sign the dotted line so their numbers look better. They don't care what happens after that. I'm not saying that is what you are doing Ready2PLay, just speaking from my experience.

But again, I greatly appreciate all of you in the military and your hard work, dedication, etc. Many people have the best time of their lives in the military, meet lifelong friends, greatly improve their future, etc. Some people get stationed in Germany and get to tear up the Autobahn. Some people get stationed in places like Hawaii. I know that happens and I don't want to take away from it, but a lot of folks end up in some craphole desert, or tundra, or stuck in a guard tower 16 hours a day, or get a limb blown off. The rewards are great, but as with any great reward there is pontentially great risk.

I won't post anything else. I don't want to turn your thread into a debate over joining the military. I just wanted to make sure that people consider all the facts. Thanks!

Re: Official Army recruiting/ Military info thread

But unless YOU perosnally have experienced the military, you aren't really stating the facts. I on the other hand am. I have experienced it, and still am. To say that it's a normal 9-5 is the truth. I am not sugarcoating anything. Yes, there are places where you will not have that. And there are places that your 9-5 is more like a midnight-8, but all the same. It's just a NORMAL job in so many aspects. If you are sick, you can go to the doctors office, for free mind you, for whatever ails you. Whether it is a headache, or something more severe. They will diagnose and determine if you can work, treat you as such, and give you a doctors note. Just like MOST normal jobs, aside from the fact that THEY don't pay for your little doctors visit, but still require a "sick note"

The military is what you make it. You only take out of it what you are willing to put into it. But in all honesty, it's not that strenuous as most people like to believe. It is actually more laid back than MOST jobs that I have held. I am here to give people the real deal, pure facts. I am not going to try and hide truths. But I do want to clarify hearsay such as what you have posted. Only someone who knows and has experienced first hand can tell you what it is REALLY like.

And it's a fact, most soldiers like to complain. Just as I'm sure your friends did. But I bet they weren't complaining about the extra pays and such they were getting for being over there (Korea). Not to mention, it's only a 1 year tour there, most of the time with a choice of assignment afterwards. It is the truth, sometimes you work long hours. But it is also the truth, sometimes you do absolutely nothing, get plenty of time off (including most weekends in normal situations), and the benifits outweigh the downfalls.
