What common problems to look for when buying used tibs?

To start off, I have always loved the 03+ tiburons. However when it came to purchasing a car 4 years ago I got my dream car... a del sol. It was awesome and I loved it, I still love it. However, last week I was hit and my car was totaled. Sadly the pickings of del sols around me currently are terrible so I decided to get a newer car and want a tiburon.

To start things off, what problems should I look for when purchasing a tiburon? I'm currently looking at a 03 gt.

Re: What common problems to look for when buying used tibs?

Same thing you would look for on any used car... Brakes, tires, body rust... that sort of stuff. Ask if they have any service records and if the timing belt has been changed recently. Kelly blue book to find out the actual value of the vehicle and you should be able to make sure you're not getting screwed. I bought my 03 tib with 119k miles for $5000 which i though was a pretty good deal. Also, carfax will tell you if the car was reported to be in an accident.

EDIT: Also remember that the early 03 models had clutch problems so ask if it has been replaced.

Re: What common problems to look for when buying used tibs?

What kind of problems with the clutch? The 03 gt I am looking at has 77k on it and he's asking 5.5k. KBB for it is 5.6k in excellent condition. I'm also bringing it to my buddies shop to have him do a once over the car as well.

The biggest thing for me is I actually bought a 03 tib before, it was the first car I had ever bought and 2 days latter it started smoking. Luckily I made the dealership agree to a 3 days trial where I could return it.

Thumbs up Re: What common problems to look for when buying used tibs?

I heard the 03 tibs had a week factory clutch. i paid 4k even for my 03 gt auto tib with 71k miles

my gf has a 04 and honestly the only thing i noticed when looking at them all was the interior trim seems to get wore down pretty quick

Also always require proof of when the timing belt was done or you will get stuck footing that bill or having it snap

sorry to hear about your del sol i know how people get attached to there hondas i still have my ek

Re: What common problems to look for when buying used tibs?

Also another question. What were the different trim levels and what did they come with?

This 03 is stated as a GT, but has cloth interior and no sunroof.

Thanks takahashi. But does any one know what options the 03 tiburon gt came with? I find it odd that a gt would have cloth seats and not leather.

It really depends. These days with all the options you can get on a car, you can really customize it the way you want.

My guess is you are looking at an early-model 2003 Tiburon GT, which pretty much just means it will have a V6 and possibly a 6-speed, maybe the Infinity sound system.

What? A GT with cloth seats and no sunroof? I'm not sure if it was necessarily a "package" but they exist. I owned one.

Re: What common problems to look for when buying used tibs?

i think that was the base GT, with the cloth seats and no sun-roof.

There was the "ultra sports package" that is the one that came with the 6-speed and high rise spoiler. But its all options that you could combine when new..

Other than that, most options are merely cosmetic.

Edit: sorry back to your original question. You have to check if that timing belt has been changed also the 03's factory clutches were mediocre and you may want to upgrade it.

PS: Users with the i4 may demotivate you from buying the tib due to it being "too slow". Get the V6, put on an intake, exhaust, and you won't have the same grumbles as them.
I would like to address this at the bottom of the link given to us by the tiburon gods. Both are actually slow, very slow indeed. But the i4 has a better aftermarket selection to almost go fast.

He says the previous owner replaced the clutch. An that he replaced the clutch master cylinder. So no timing belt was replaced. How much should that affect the price?

you can push it 500-700 down as that's about how much parts and labor should cost you.

Re: What common problems to look for when buying used tibs?

Yeah, definetely get the clutch checked out... i got my first car from my uncle (dealer) and even after test driving and getting safety'd at a mechanic before purchase, i later found out that the clutch was machined TWICE, making it paper thin and nearly burnt and cracked if i hadnt fixed it. Along with the flywheel. Cost me $800+ and i later found out that my car still jerks whenever i shift gears. Not my driving apparently, its the motor/transmission mounts. Another thing is my whole damn electrical system in the car is upside down. My car doesnt lock manually with the drivers door, but locks both doors when passengers side is locked, my passengers window died, my sunroof seems like it needs a new motor too. Thermostat died recently too but a car is a car and parts die out sooner or later.

As someone stated earlier, the lock actuators, including wiring. so make sure the windows work properly, and everything else. Good luck with finding a tiburon! Nonetheless im a picky person and i want a car that will not cause me problems (like everyone else wishes) but so far having my car for 2 and a half months now that is really the only things i still have problems with/fixed.

P.S. got my car at 118kms.

Re: What common problems to look for when buying used tibs?

The packages for the GK Tiburon (03+) changed mid year for the 2003 model. I have GT that is leather seats, sunroof, sub woofer but it has the GS 16" wheels. It sounds like you are looking at the GS model. On the back of the tib does it actually say GT?

Re: What common problems to look for when buying used tibs?

I have had an 03 and two 06, v6, automatic. The 03 had a lot more "small" problems including switches and door handles breaking. Would go for an '05-06 if I were you. Also, the most common CEL for me was for the oxygen sensors.
