Old DIY: Speaker Noise/Sunroof Leak Fix 09-29-2009 , 10:20 PM

I know a lot of people with 03-04s with Premium Infinity sound systems (maybe 05-06s too not sure?) have this problem, I did with my 03 GT. Basically there's this crackling noise from the speakers that people report hearing, regardless of volume. It tends to happen after it rains out, and it's always those with the Infinity sound system. This is because of crappy-built sunroof drain-off tubes that Hyundai put in our cars. They come disconnected after time, so the water that comes in through the sunroof's cracks ends up draining into the car instead of through the tube like it's supposed to.

It drains from the sunroof into the headliner, and down around the back quarter-panels. The stock amp is behind the rear driver's side quarter panel, and when the water leaks in onto the amp's connection points it causes the crackling/popping noise people hear. This also can cause you BCM to short out/melt, which is a very pricey repair. I got lucky and caught this when my BCM was only partially damaged, so a computer repair shop was able to fix the melted parts for a couple hundred bucks, instead of replacing it for nearly $1000. I know others haven't been so lucky. The leak fix itself would also be expensive at a garage, because of the labor involved in taking the headliner down, when it's actually pretty easy to do yourself. You also would have no idea whether the garage actually fixed the drainage tubes by clamping them in place or simply put them back on the plugs like they are originally. When you fix the tubes, the water will correctly drain down them and back out near the rear wheels.

So, anyway, onward with the DIY.

Materials:
-2 small .5"-1" metal clamps
-Screwdrivers for screws, ratchets or wrenches for bolts, pliers for push-tabs.
-Seatbelt bolt attachment or wrench for rear seatbelts

01. First, you need to remove a whole bunch of parts. This includes the back bench seat, both rear seat-backs, the back lower and upper quarter-panels. This is mostly bolts, screws, and push-tabs, it's all pretty self-explanatory, but you can use the Hyundai service website (http://www.hmaservice.com) or PM me if you need any further instruction.

02. The visors, front pillars, and sunglasses holder also all have to be removed.

03. Pull down the headliner, and locate the disconnected tubes. There is one on each side of the rear of the sunroof, underneath.

04. Plug the tubes back onto the drainage ports.

05. This is the MOST IMPORTANT STEP, use small clamps on the tubes to ensure that this problem will never present itself again.

06. The stock amp is under the bottom rear quarter panel on the driver's side. Check it for damage or wetness and dry it out before putting everything back together.

07. Installation of headliner is reverse of removal, put it back up first then start putting your car back together. Enjoy your crackle-free music and water-free car.

Comments/suggestions are welcome. See my sig for other DIYs.

The sound is the least of your concern if you have this problem. Not only are you getting water in your car, which is bad to begin with, but eventually it will fry your BCM which is a $1000 repair.

Ok ?, usually after it rains like crazy I notice tht some water drips down onto the bcm under the dash. Could it possibly be this hose issue from the sunroof as I do have one. Has anyone ever had this problem wit water drip under the dash. I've tried searching and looking everywhere for the source and no luck. I don't know exactly where this water runs from but I would think tht it is possible it could run over to the drivers front side and down onto the floor, right. Let me know wht u all think, and I will check out the hose issue very soon. Thanx

That's real bad if it's actually hitting your BCM. It will be toast in no time, and you really don't want to replace that. So I would get in there ASAP. It's possible I guess, but the drain tubes come out the back of the sunroof, so it's hard to believe it would run forward, especially when everyone else reports it leaking into the same spot, driver's side rear quarter panel.

Either way I would open your sh!t up as soon as possible and find out where it's coming from.

Well I've already replaced the bcm cause water and wires don't mix. Shorts it out and my turn signal would keep flashing witout touching it. So I've become a pro at taking it out and apart. It's a pain. See I believe the car was in an accident b4 and they replaced the winshield cause the stock winshield has the Hyundai logo on it and this one doesn't. So I thought maybe they never sealed the window properly which could cause water to leak in, but I'm lost as to wht it could be.

Before I read about the sunroof issue on this site, I had no idea where my water was coming from. So I took off the interior paneling and sat in the car and had my girlfriend run a hose all over the car to pinpoint where it was coming in from. So that's one option.

But from what you said it sounds like the windshield could be the culprit. For water to be getting in/under your dash that would certainly make the most sense.

Thanks a ton for this very helpful DIY.....

i just did this DIY this weekend...if it helps, the sunroof has four drain hoses, one on each corner, on my case only the two rear ones were the hoses disconnected.

I also noticed that water was getting on my front carpets, while undoing the a-pillar covers, i noticed that the water that came in through the rear drains was also finding its way through the plastic piece that covers the a-pillar and was pouring to the front of the car all the way to the front carpets...

i will post pictures later today.... to show the 4 drains..

Great DIY, glad I found this one! I've been dealing with this obnoxious noise for a few months unable to figure out where it was coming from. It migrated from my right rear speaker to my front left the other day. I'll be in there this weekend fixing this.. Maybe the headliner DIY while it's down, but that means I have to do the door panels to match... HMMM, we'll see what time allows for...
