Old DIY Door Handle Disassembly - swap just handles 01-25-2004 , 09:42 AM

Some people may want to swap just the handles(part you pull on to open the door) with other members to make for some cool mods. So if you want a black door handle on a silver tib heres the DIY. Its pretty easy if you can use a phillips screwdriver and put a puzzle together.

1.) If you flip the handles over once you have them out of the door you will see a large brass pin(2" long). This pin holds one side of the handle in and also holds the spring that retracts the handle. I used a pair of pliers and pulled the pin out. Its kinda tight in there so give it a good pull.
2.) There is also another brass pin on the opposite side of the handle a short one about an inch long. Punch this one out with the end of a screwdriver, this one comes out much easier.
3.) There are 2 screws on the back that hold on the lock cylinder cover(small piece to the left of the handle where you put the key in)just unscrew these and it comes off.
4. The handle should come out easily if you pull the side out where the big pin was in first and then the other side comes out.

Now just put in the other colored handle and reinstall the pins. The most difficult part is getting the big pin back in and getting the spring back to its original position. I used a pair of needle nose pliers to twist the spring back into position and put the pin back in. All in all it was an easy task and took no longer than 10 mins to disassemble.

Always remember you're unique......just like everyone else.

I am also having trouble with this pin. If there's more to this than brute force it would be nice to know

I feel like a tool, this pin ownes me. Im afraid I'm going to do irreparable damage trying to get this thing out. Really burns me up to hear people say they did this in 30 min. I got mine from SR and the pins seemed a little bent to begin with but damn,I'm givin it all I got wit vise grips & sh*t. I noticed some notches on the end of the pin. Is there a specific way to twist those things out or what? Screw it I'll get em out 1 way or another. Just hope it's not as hard to get my OEM handles apart.

Those pins took me forever to get out. The OEM ones are going to be just as bad too. What worked best for me was to get a really good grip on the end of the pin with some vice grips and rotate the pin back and forth as I was pulling it out. I had to make sure the pin was actually turning though...not just the vice grips spinning on the end. Even doing that, it seemed like those things would never come out but eventually they came free. Good luck with them. Make sure you have a REALLY good idea of how that spring is sitting in there while it's all together. Once you take that pin off, the spring untwists a little bit and it can be a little confusing putting back together if you don't remember how it was.
