Old DIY: Hatch Rattle Removal 01-27-2004 , 10:37 PM

For months now I have had the hatch rattle and it drove me insane. 3 days ago I found what it was. On your hatch in the center there is a panel. It’s lets u access the brake light wiring I think.. well I took it off and left it off, no more rattle. right behind it there is a wire with a plastic connector that was slapping the panel causing the noise.
Anyone with the problem give it a shot, pop it off and drive around. if it stops all u have to do it secure up that wire. Hope this helps some of u.

Is this panel near the tail end of the car/hatch, or up by the hinge? Also, how do you pop it off? I have various hatch rattles which i think i've narrowed down to being the various plastic pieces which go around the edges of the hatch, but i couldn't figure out how to take any of them off and didn't want to break anything...

(pictures would be nice )

I wrapped my jack in the spare tire well with massive amounts of towells, and that took care of most of the rattles.

Ill look for what you said, and see if its the same on then 2nd gens.

Never even noticed this hatch was even there. I get a single click type of rattle when I hit a big bump or joint in the road when it is cold outside......I bet it is coming from this hatch cover thingy. I'll let you know.

yes, it was definitely not the hatch compression springs. i will have to try this. however, anytime i hit any bump, i ALWAYS get that "tick tickety tick" from the right side in the back somewhere.

btw, jack is gone..

damn so the cover it self it causing it all.. see when i first took it off the wire was pressed up against the plate so i figured that was it.. now that u took it off and the wire was not hitting it at all means it just the plate making all that noise.. now we need to find a nice way to put it back on so it does not rattle anymore.

well i'm definitely gonna try this tonight, but i'm fairly convinced my rattles (I seem to have two, sometimes back left, sometimes back right, sometimes both) are coming from the rest of the plastic trim on the hatch... anyone know how to remove that? Just shove a screwdriver in, or are there specific clips I should be trying to release?

I'm so sick of trying to modulate my driving to make the "ticktickticktick" go away... but it's pretty much always there unless the road is completely smooth.

hey guys. my rearview mirror shakes. i work at a tennis shop and string tennis rackets and occasionally wrap peoples rackets with new grip. buy some cheap baseball or tennis grip and just cut it according to size and slap it on there. it should stick just fine and take care of the rattle, it did for my rearview mirror

another idea is to maybe tape off the edges with some black electrical tape(using this cuz its black) to make it fit more snug so that there is no room for movement. thats what i will try doing.

I removed the hatch cover, didn't make a difference for me. I think what's shaking/rattling are the two long pieces of trim that run parallel to the car on the hatch. And possibly the piece that runs perpendicular, up by the hatch hinge itself.

That grip tape idea is pretty good... I will definitely be trying to tape the trim down next, but that feels kinda ghetto. If anyone has any tips for just removing the trim all together, i'd lbe interested... (I know, it's probably not that hard, but i'd rather not break anything on my new car and i haven't really done this sort of stuff before)

Where exactly did you adhere the tape to the rearview mirror?? I have that annoying rattle from the mirror too. I thought it was the overhead compartment thing for months, then one day i was tweaking the mirror and it stopped. Never would've guessed thats where it was coming from

Mine rattles as well

I ripped it off once because it made me so mad - and it looked kinda cool without it and I liked it. But when I took my car in to get a fuel pump, they saw the mirror in the backseat and put it back on lol.

Maybe wrapping floss between the spot where it connects will stop this (just thought of that). Floss is thin enough to fit deep within the crevace so it wouldnt be seen, and soft enough that if you build up some layers it would provide cushion and dampen the rattle. Ill have to test that out and let ya know how it works.

Oh, so wait a minute.. You don't have the high spoiler yet, so the only thing you've done is remove the low spoiler, and now you have a rattle?

anywho, the carbon fiber idea is kinda pointless. and it would be kinda expensive.

the floss idea is a good one. let us know how it works out

i applied the wrap to the backside of the rear view mirror. it still rattles a little but the first time i did it was with a thicker wrap so i just need to find a wider piece to put there. it worked the first time. the sell tennis wrap thats perforated and in the perforations have colors. you could prolly get red or white or whatever color your car is. thats just a thought though.

thanks for the post, picknrun!

ok i have a history with this rattling crap too and it is really really annoying...

so i got my car and the plastic panel on top at the hinge of the hatch had fallen off...so i go into the dealership to have them stick it on after i tried reattaching it with the sealant...anyway...i brought it in for them to attach it and i had a rattle up top right above my head and a little toward the rear...i asked them to check it out and they take off the panel and say they fixed it...

i drive away and the next thing i know...i got a rattle again when i get near my house...it was silent and sounded and felt really really nice until that point...

i havent gone back but i still have a rattle and it sounds like its coming from multiple places, rear left and rear right...im thinking that the plastic shelf in the back might be tapping against the sides that hold it up so maybe im gonna try putting some cushioning in between the plastic shelf and the sides...

i will definitely try the panel thing you guys were talking about and also let me know if the floss thing works...

as far as the carbon fiber thing...if it came out i wouldn't buy it...hahaha

freakin dealership sucks...gotta go back...

also, i dont think this is the place to be asking cuz it has nothing to do with the rattle, but anyone know if body repair due to snow is covered in the warranty? the snow piled up on my car and it dented my entire top in various places...sooooo frustrating...

Wish I had all the money in the world to upgrade and modify my Tibby...

Warranty wont cover that. No-fault might, try to clame it as a vandalism.

Guys I found a way to fix the vinyl that rattles. It's real easy I just went out and bought some 7/16" foam tape and stuck a few pieces between the vinyl and window, its black so u can hide it real well. Also I stuck a few pieces between the window brake light (and just about anywhere that i thought would rattle). I cant hear anymore rattles. . .thank god!!!!
