My clutch went out at 150k, pretty normal so far as I can tell from my research. What I haven't been able to come up with is a good replacement. I've been looking around and asking around, and I have a shop that can put it in and has a good reputation, and a good price (I can't do it myself, as I just moved and don't have the tools or the lift to do it myself). So, my question is between the multitudes of clutches in my price range maxing at 350, what brands make the best ones that last, and what brands should I completely steer clear of?
I have my eye on the XTR 3 stage clutch kit, but I'm not sure of how well it's going to perform and last. I haven't seen much feedback on it's input in the tiburon one way or another. Any advice right now is very much appreciated as I'm not really in the financial status to just try out different clutches and see what works for me.
Useful info: I drive in LA in day to day traffic, occasionally driving it hard when the freeways are open, maybe twice a week, for about 20 mins max. Still NA engine. Slave and master cylinder were replaced about 7k miles ago. 03, 5 speed.
My apologies if something like this has been posted already, but the threads I could find on it are all several years old and don't include any clutch kits that have been introduced in the last 2-3 years.
I went with the Valeo kit with SMF conversion for daily driving and I was happy with it. Was still going strong after 2+ years of a lot of spirited driving and poor shifts.
That's good. I have seen a lot of good feedback, and the price is low enough for me to afford it, but does it only come in stage one for the tib? If it's in my options, I'd rather go for 2 stage or higher.
I went with the same. It was a Valeo stock replacement and single mass flywheel in a kit for less than 300. So far its even help up to some 9.5 psi loving so it will definitely hold your power level.
I have the xtr stage 3 6 puck in mine. I haven't ripped around on it much but for the little time I did drive it it seemed to have a nice grab. Kit also went in nice with no problems. It also converts it to single mass
Be realistic with your power goals and budget. Nobody makes new Supercharger kits anymore and there has never been a Procharger kit on the market for the Tiburon. Closest thing was the RIPP Vortech based kit which went out of production many moons ago.
Sit down with your self and plan out how you really want to use your car and go from there. You'll find in most cases sticking to a normally aspirated build using a refreshed stock block will get you the most bang for your buck.
Do you even know what a ball park number is for what you think you might be possibly planning in the future?
Built block and heads to take a good amount of forced inducted power = 5-10 USD
Clutch and flywheel that can hold that power = 500-2000 USD dollars
Some sort of tuning system to control that power = 400-2500 USD
Crap like a new exhaust system and motor mounts and injectors to support said system = 250-2000 USD
Paying someone to install and build and tune it all? Figure on over 2000 USD in labor alone
So......you gotta ask yourself? "Do you feel lucky?"
Oh and you live in California so you get to deal with the CARB Nazi's. If whatever you do is not CARB certified then you seriously risk having your car impounded if its not. AFAIK only a few Intakes and cat back exhaust systems bothered to pay for a CARB EO#. You sure as hell won't be able to install a turbo, super, pro, vortech charger or headers.
Like I said, it's all up in the air. This is all brainstorming at this point. As I look more into it, I might just say **** it and get a gt3000 vr4, or a new Genesis.
Alright, so I got a rhinopak clutch pack and pressure plate with a Valeo single mass flywheel. So far so good, and I have a used transmission with 59k miles on it ready to go in once this factory tranny blows, which will be very soon; a muffler fell off another vehicle on the freeway in front of me and put a big old crack in the case. Now it takes a full ***** slap to get it into first and second, and the reverse gears make awful noises when engaged. RIP original transmission.
