P0031 let the flaming begin

Ok so I know what the elders of this forum are about to say do the research .but I did and the years of random data did not help. So alas I ask 05 gt going into limp mode after p0031 code, I understand it’s an 02 sensor issue I have headers and no cats any were to a greddy cat back so I un pluged all 02 sensors becuse I don’t care about emmisons I live in Kansas and the check engine light has been on in every car I’ve owned. So why am I still getting this code and limp mode when I watch the live data the stft number increase a lot but the ltft numbers stay 0 what is going on? In the immortal words of the human torch Flame on.

You unplugged all your O2 sensors and your wondering why the ECU is pissed off? You may not care about Emissions but your ECU still does.

Your right I understand that the 02 sensors are throwing codes not being connected but I’ve never had a car go into limp mode becuse of 02 sensors. I would think it would revert back to base tuning, I wouldn’t think that the 02 sensors play that much of a part in the stoichiometric ratio.

Re: P0031 let the flaming begin

The ECU has extensive emissions programming and taking away its ability to monitor the AFR and Catalyst Effeciency so eventually its gonna give up and trigger limp mode. Chances are we're not hearing the whole story and you have more than just that code..lol

Don't bother; it's a cut and dry issue. Get your O2 sensors working again. Just because you don't like the solution doesn't change the reality of the situation. Huff and puff all you want about it.

I'll add that if the OP doesn't care about the environment and only performance then get a full standalone and be done with it. lol

Re: P0031 let the flaming begin

What CEL codes do you have when the primary O2 sensors are plugged in?
Does the car stay out of limp mode as long as you have the sensors plugged in?

The primary sensors being plugged in is hardly only for emissions purposes, and you definitely are NOT getting more performance by having them unplugged.
So if that's your reason, you are wrong.

Re: P0031 let the flaming begin

plug the first sensor in correctly. Then get a spacer and space the second out of the main flow. The second sensor sees less O2 and thus reports that the cat is working. Occasionally on long road trips it may still trigger CEL. Immediately clear the CEL when it comes on.

Re: P0031 let the flaming begin

Did you use OEM sensors? All others are junk and won't work right. If they are all throwing a heater code then it could be that the power to the heater circuit isn't working.

Re: P0031 let the flaming begin

Curious, did you make sure to remove power from the ECU when you did this? That way the ECU will hard-reset everything.

Re: P0031 let the flaming begin

To check the heater circuit you would need a volt meter and check all the connector pins for 12v. The heater circuit will have 12v.

It could be a failing coolant and/or air temp sensor.

Changed both coolant and air temp sensors when car gets to normal stft sky rockets to 35 on my scanner and then heavy gas smell so my guess it’s running rich after normal temp for some reason any ideas ? Oh won’t start again till it cools back down

Re: P0031 let the flaming begin

You need to take some OBD data logs and post them up here. There's too many variables in play. Did you use OEM sensors for the Intake and Coolant temp?

Re: P0031 let the flaming begin

You need to determine your manufacture date to know for sure but yes there is a big difference between early 03, made in 02 models and 05. The sensors and ECU are completely different and are not compatible. Ordering OEM parts via your VIN should've made sure you got the right parts for your engine/car.

Fixed 02 sensors noticed mass airflow reading 0,7 lb/min and 02 sensors reading 0.975v at 31.3% don’t ask me why but I blew on mass airflow sensor when idling car started to stumble and falter

try disconnecting the MAF connector, does it idle better? try cleaning CRC MAF cleaner. 0.7 mg sounds about right. should you need one let me know, i got 3 OEM sensors left.
