Hey all. I just got a 2 brand new alpine type s subs...but i dont know what kind of amp, or even how big, to power them. I'm not too familiar the power the amps put out compared to how much the subs can handle. A little help please?

Basically you wanna match RMS wattage, I have two 12 Type R's and i'm using a Kenwood 9102d mono block amp at 2 ohms. I think alpine should make a fairly inexpensive amp that should give you some nice thump. Basically just look for an amp that will give you around the RMS wattage that your subs put out.
That depends, they're dual coil right? Did you get dual 2 ohm, or dual 4 ohm?

If they're dual 4ohm, then you'll want to wire your subs up in series, and get an amp that puts out between 450 - 600 watts rms at 4 ohms (you can go higher wattage and just turn it down). Or, if you find a 1 ohm stable amp, you can wire them parallel and use a 600 watt at 1 ohm amp. Probably cheaper and easier to stick with series.

If they're dual 2 ohm, wire them in series, and get an amp that puts out 450-600 watts at 2 ohms.
they are dual coils at 2 ohms
you are going to need a d class mono block amp with a 600-700 watt 2 ohm rating.
run each sub in series from one coil to the other, then run the two subs together in parallel to get you to a 2 ohm load.

amp options that would work for you:
Infinity Reference 611a - probably the best power option
Alpine MRP-M650 - dead on power rating (IMO may be a bit under powered)
Kenwood KAC-9102D - awesome amp and would work, but you may need to bring your voulme level down or you will over power the subs. - ohyaa69 would know about these amps and the sweetness that they are.

PM me if you need wiring diagrams or extra help
mlktibby, check your pm. i have one that should work for you

Yeah the Kenwood amp is freakin sick I keep the sub level on the HU on -6 and teh gain on the amp is completely down and my freakin car still shakes. Insane is all I can say. Thanks again Cycon82 for that wiring diagram got them setup exactly like you said and it sounds amazing. Hopefully we can get the sucker metered one day and see what these alpines are capable of. I just got my multimeter to tune the input level sensitivity and the amp altogether so I need to get than done soon to. Now I just need to dynamat the damn car :3_frusty:

Don't forget the pink noise CD, you have to do that at a certain hertz level!
Yeah I was gonna ask you guys that, where can I get the test cd or is there just a track I can download and burn. Oh sorry for the hi-jack

I use to have one written down that you could order off the web. Call JL audio and ask for the tech department and then tell that guy you are trying to do what you are trying to do, and you need to know what CD they recommend, that is how I got it, just have to figure out which manual I wrote it in! The mp-650 is going to be the best match for the 2 subs. And you will also have really good clarity with that amp. The Kenwood amp is too powerful for type S subs. I had 2 type r's and i had the kenwood amp and that was about perfect. Alpine would be a smart choice.
Alpine MRD-M605 or MRD-M1005 would match well. I have the M605 and it has been running solid so far.
