I just painted my calipers, and ended up with a little bit of overbrush on the pad shims behind the calipers (crappy masking job). Anyway, my question is that if I take the calipers off and remove the pads/shims as if I were replacing the pads, and I put the same pad back in, will I need to compress the piston on the caliper in the same way as if I were installing new pads? From what I've read, the only reason that the piston needs to be compressed is to allow for thicker pads to be put back in, and I won't be having that problem...

well you may have to compress it a little. the pad should be right against the rotor when it comes off and there is usually a small amount of pressure in the line which will cause it to be a really tight squeeze to get back on.
