Did you buy the standard or the mini? it is a known issue with the mini that the adapter will fail to communicate with the ECU. check the buyer reviews of the site you are buying it from. I purchased and ELM327 mini from a private seller and had the same issue. However, I returned that one and bought the standard one from DX and it works perfectly. Apps like Torque will actually try to steer you away from "clone" OBD2 readers, and to a point, for good reason. As you and I both found out. lawl. Return that one and but a different one from a reputable seller. Best of luck.

Cheap or counterfeit Elm (aka ver 1.5) in ebay, aliexpress are really bad because ELM electronic never produced an 1.5 ver, they mostly use false 1.2 chip that have bad connection, low speed,...

If you want buy an authentic ELM buy the 2.1 or 2.2 ver around 50$ or buy a OBD link.

OBD link are faster, more protocole and a firmware that can be updated without need a new chip.
