Ok I understand maintaining decency, especially for those in the workplace who need filters, but seriously, why is the word "G A Y" being filtered? I'm not writing this to start some huge uproar I just want to know why on earth this word is blocked. I dont think there is anything offensive about it. Its also making some conversations in the political threads look like a mess because its blocked out adn we're definitely not used to it being like this. I understand the F word beling blocked, the S word, etc...those are gimmes. but "g a y"? seriously. can someone logically explain this? it wasn't like this on NT.com before the switchover...

Xion and TGK have pretty much summed it up, but just to clear up any confusion I'll go into a little further detail concerning the reason g a y is now censored.
Here's the problem... 99.99999% of the time that g a y is used on THIS forum, it's used in a derogatory manner. That is the unfortunate truth and is not likely to change anytime soon. We have had complaints from members in the past that were turned off of this site because of the out-of-control usage of that word in an inappropriate context. Same goes for other inappropriate forms of the word, which will now certainly be added to the filter (thank you for pointing them out; ever since the hack we lost all of the censored words and just temporarily threw a few of them in there off the top of our heads).
You have to understand that the way in which a word is most commonly used on this forum carries a lot of weight in whether or not we tag said word as censor worthy. If, at some point, the site staff sees a trend towards a less derogatory usage of any word in the filter, we will at that time uncensor it (within reason). Until then, you'll just have to respect the filter. In certain cases where you would be using the true meaning of the word just get a little creative and throw a space between each letter. This is the only censored word we'll let this fly with, so don't consider this an invitation to circumvent the filter.

Personally, I see no reason to have a filter in the first place. Car forum. Anybody who has hung out within 100 yards of a mechanic knows a dozen new curse words per week. Some of them have mouths to make a sailor's cheeks turn a bit rosy.
Whether I post YOU MOTHER ****ER and it's censored or not, those little asterisks aren't preventing the point from being taken. But when I refer to Panasonic as Matsu****a, ****ing a shotgun, or JFK being ******inated, the whole idea of a filter seems silly to me. We're all adults here. Just my opinion.

I think we should launch a sensitivity campaign. Every time a member would be using g a y in a derogatory context, they should instead sub in "disturbingly homosexual".
For example:
"Hyundai's decision to remove the Tiburon's gills for the 07/08 model year is disturbingly homosexual."

"Go **** yourself" has become "Go Happy yourself" on other boards I've been on in the past.
Another one I liked was "This is a bunch of ****" was translated to "This is a bunch of puppies"

I mean if i were to bring my mom in here to decide what was bad, she'd add crud, crap, fart, freakin, and friggin to the list too...extreme? in your eyes maybe, but not to her, but if she were to do that, no one would like it...so she can't. she tolerates what she hears and reads, though she doesn't like it.
and for the record, I think ass is much more offensive than g a y is. yet it remains unfiltered. not that i care, so dont go make osme movement because of me. I personally dont go crying to a filter everytime i see a word that makes me unhappy.

I think the idea of a bad word on/off switch was best, but that was also rejected. Oh well, gotta deal with it.

Oh, and the point Max made about *** was that it's filtered due to derogatory use. Using "disturbingly homosexual" as an alternative would technicaly be against the rules due to context... Disagreeing with homosexuality is different than using is as a negative slang word to put down a completely different subject.

i dont want all filters off. i love the idea of the on off switch. i dont care if a few of the harsher words are added to the filter. i just think g a y is not part of that list. by far.
