Hello My name is Aaron,

I am 15 and I am soon going to turn 16 and I am looking into the tib. But my mom says that Hyundai as a maker is not a good maker and I guess she pretty much means that they such so for the people who do have have this type of car can you please inform me about maintance for example, if they are high/low maintance. Also please tell me what you think about your car if you are satisfy by it or not and tell me why. I will be modding this car also will this affect engine life? and if you how much does it effect it by how many miles does it usually last with out mods. I do plan on racing legally when I am 21 or sometime around then so please and thank you.

(I will be buying a used one with about 50-60k miles 2003 gt)

What is it with these kids getting badass rides in high school!? I drove a beat up 84 Cavalier, and my UPGRADE was an 82 Camaro Berlinetta...and I saved up to buy those outright. I mean seriously, wtf!?

Not sure if it's my jealousy or disgust with parents spoiling their kids...maybe both. no offense man...just be thankful.

All that aside, I was blown away when I picked up my Tib. No regrets but my price tag (shoulda been willing to walk). There are known issues with the manuals and a few other small things, but overall, a very high quality car for the price range.

EDIT: eeewww, just thought about something. You may want to look into an I4 man...insurance may (or may not, who knows) eat you alive at 16 with the GT.

Hyundai isn't the car company it was 10 years ago. They have come quite a long way and make some really nice cars now. As someone else mentioned JD Powers ranked them very high in initial quality. I bought my 04 with 0 miles on it in January of 05. I've put 40K miles on it and the only issue I had was the airbag light came on which turned out to be a bad seatbelt sensor which was replaced under warranty.

Look around NT a bit...both the beta and delta are very capable platforms (though not necessarily the best) if you're willing to throw the money at it. But Dude, you're 15. I'm glad that you have a passion for cars, I really am, but you should be worrying about being comfortable behind the wheel before...

You know what, nevermind. I'm going to back out of this now before I say something that's gonna get me in trouble.

lol im 17 and i paid and am still paying for my tib. every single thing.

personally i love the way it looks, drives, sounds, and handles. but i have realized that to satisfy my automobile criteria. i need to really really pour money into my tib. so wrx is the way to go. reliability, power, tunability, handling, saftey, space, its just an awsome car.

but dont get me wrong. for my 3rd car... not having to deal with a piece of crap really really makes my day lol

Hyundai has come a LONG way.

I don't know if this is the JD Power link you guys are talking about, but here's the one where Hyundai was ranked above Toyota-

quality-survey-puts-hyundai-above-toyota/254/

Or maybe it was this?

http://www.jdpower.com/corporate/news/releases/pressrelease.aspx?ID=2006082

Hyundai ranks among the top three nameplates in the study for the first time in the history of IQS. Highlights include a top ranking for the Hyundai Tucson in the compact multi-activity vehicle (MAV) segment, and top-three segment performances for the redesigned Sonata and all-new Azera, as well as the Elantra and Tiburon.

30k scheduled maint was $300, 60k maint is around $500 - 600. Other than that it was just oil changes.

I have 50,000 miles on my 2003 and it's been a great car.

And don't forget to look into the cost of car insurance, given your age :)

yes look at insurance but if you can put the tiburon under your dads name as your dad being primary driver it will save a lot as well. for example, im paying 800 dollars a year for insurance on my 04 tib gt, full tort insurance, thats everything you can have incase you were wondering, i can sue whoever for whatever is what full tort basically is.

i do have a 95 eclipse that i pay 1100 a year for, and thats just liability, plus our insurance has 4 cars with 3 drivers so that helps as well.

basically what im saying is there are ways around paying a lot you just have to find them, but sometimes there isnt, haha

Mechanically, I owned an 03 an an 04 Tiburon and had zero mechanical problems. Once the driver's window stopped working, but that's it, and it was replaced under warranty.

I would 100% recommend Hyundai. They are now more reliable than ALL American manufacturers, and are now at a par with Toyota and Honda for reliability. The only makers who are better that Hyundai for quality are Porsche and Lexus. As far as reliability, they're 100% reliable.

ditto that!

A lot of people have labled Hyundai "Korean garbage" in the past, but the tables have turned dramaticaly over the past 5 years or so. The Tiburon is a very solid car in terms of reliability. I have met a lot of people on the boards here, and I don't recall one person owning a tib who didn't love it. For a <$20k sport compact, it's a good buy for the money.

As fars as performance/modifications go, there's tons of stuff available for the tib. just search some of the site sponsors.

Since 2002 I've owned 3 Hyundais. A 2002 Elantra, a 2003 Tiburon GT and currently a 2007 Tiburon GT, with zero complaints other than minor things that were covered under warranty. Because fo the overall safety rating on the tib your insurance will be a little more than on some other vehicles but not by much. The cars are very moddable, but because they aren't your "main stream" tuner car, it'll cost you a little more money and a whole lot more patience to build it up. Having said that, there are tons of people on NT.com who have modded their tibs to varying degrees and have had no issues. I think your mom is remembering the Hyundai's of the late 80's and early 90's when they weren't a very good car, but that changed in the later 90's and on into this current era. Very reliable, very well built, attractive body lines and easy to maintain. For the money, they're a good choice.

i think the tiburon is great car. i got a 2006 GT back in august this year and at first i didnt like it becuase i had my eyes set on a Mustang GT, but the insurance would be outrageous, but the Tiburon has grown on me and now i dont think i would get rid of it. i havent had any troubles with maintenence or mechanical problems. and as for insurance im 16 and have a the GT model and my insurance is about 130 a month which isnt a ridiculous amount buts its no where near the 200+ a month a mustang would have cost me.

uh oh... thats not going to be good... insurance...

will this car be good for modding because at this point i kind want to have a nice car but yet be able to mod it
i am 18, i have a 03 gt i pay $330 a month lol..it sucks, thats y i only have i/h/e lol

Damn skippy, the one post wonder is right. :3_pimatyo

I'm 17, i've had mine for like, just over a month, and it's been nuttin but good. I couldn't beat the deal i got tho, take over payments for 10 months, totaling $5500 even though the guy knew it was worth 10k easy. Nice guy he was.

Anyway, make sure you check around with insurance, i got all quotes from $5,000-$6,500 with a $500 deductable, and with 25k/25k for the comprehensive and liability. And $1,000,000 for personal injury. State farm gave me i think $2700 for all the same, so make sure you look around on insurance.

Only problem i had so far was a headlight went out, and my rear wiper works when it wants too.

i have had no problems other than a bad front sway bar which is prolly due to the ****** roads and snow up here in wisconsin. but if i were you i'd save up till your like 17 or 18, or whenever your a senior in high school. i bought mine when i was senior this last winter in febuary. i had the car there for 3 months, and i got hit twice. so yea if u have ****** *** drivers at your school i'd think about that. but yet agin i had a 95 gs eclipse and a 97 gsx and those were never touched.
