Hello fellow Tiburon enthusiasts!

This is my first post and I am looking forward to get my first car mainly for work and school purposes.
I'm a total noob and I have little to no knowledge about cars. However, I want to modify and do most of the maintenance on my own. My main problem is that I have the urge to learn about cars but I don't know where to start.
Anyways, I am interested in 1997-1999 model Tiburon. By looking at Craigslist in my area, (Vancouver, B.C.) cars are available around $3500-4000 CAD with 150,000km-200,000km. Is this a fair price range?
I was also wondering if 97-99 Tiburon is good choice for a first car and a good car to mess around and learn with for a student fresh off of high school?

Any opinions are welcome and thank you in advance.

Welcome to NT :)!

$3500-4000 CAD with 150,000km-200,000km, that doesn't sound so good, I agree with the other guys, I've seen (with the currency conversion done) cars about the same price USD over here for about 80k miles, I would suggest save up a little more and wait for a nice Tiburon to pop up with good mileage, have you tried looking around at dealers for some used ones?

yea id say look around my cousin bought an 01 for $2000 US and it is in perfect condition. no rust and like one dent thats going to be fixed and all he had to do was get a new engine which he got from an accent with only 16000 miles on it for $600 US so he basically has a brand new car for reallllllll cheap

thats it. all he had to new is get an entire new engine lmao
well he could have just fixed it but he was too lazy to do that the lady that drove the tib before blew the engine

the tranny was fine and all that stuff

along with getting the new engine he cleaned it, painted it, ported the IM, got a new header all that stuff

thanks for the replies guys. from what i've seen on craigslist on my area, 04 models are usually around $10,000 CAD. Is it just a bad timing to get a car right now due to economy or the cars are just generally more expensive here in Canada?
I've thought about going down to seattle (takes about 2-3 hours from Vancouver) with a greyhound and buy a car then drive it back here but my parents are telling me that there's too much paperwork and taxes so I might as well buy it here. By the way I have the typical korean parents that want me to get a civic because of cheap maintenance cost and good miles per gallon.:3_frusty: and they're against me on getting a Tiburon which is ironic because its a korean made car :3_confuse

That's funny cuz as myself having korean parents they deny me from getting anything other then this Tiburon. If you look hard enough you can get yourself a pretty nice 03-04 for a good price. Asking for 10k for one of these is ripping you off.

ugh..10k Canadian is 8400 U.S, and like i said, cars in Canada are more expensive than in the U.S

Okay, Staw even if it was 8400 that is consider to be overpriced for an 03-04.

Do you guys think its worth it to go down to the states, buy a car and go through all the customs in the border to bring it back to Canada? I'm having second thoughts..:2_cry:
My budget for a car is only about $4000~$5000 Canadian lol it's not much I know but I'm going to be graduating high school soon and I'll be needing a car for school in september.
and to you 'Do It Yourself' people, how did u guys first learn about cars? did you guys have to take classes?
Thanks for all the suggestions :3_chubby:

Coming from the same province as you and doing my research on tibs before I went out and got mine, your not going to get an 03+ model here in BC for under $10000 CAD. They are way overpriced then that of the states.
For your budget, you could get a '98 but you won't be paying less than $4000. Have you looked into private sales? Other lots?

Look what I just found... and this is just across the water.

I would phone and inquire about this, especially considering it doesn't display how many km's.

Here's another

There are lots of tibs on the island, not too many in your price range though for anything 03+.

As for going to Seattle, your parents are right, the import taxes are gonna rape you. You'll end up paying the same price as here, not to mention we aren't on par with the US dollar so you'll still be losing out.
Keep searching, if you really like tibs (like me), and want a tib (like me), then get one (like me).

Thanks for the excellent info!
I never thought of buying a car on the island but that gives me more options now :3_winkthu
My friends dad works at a dealership so he's going to look for a decent one for me.
By looking at DIY on this site, would I be able to work on the older generation Tiburon or are they just completely different?

Well see what you can do. We're planning a meet for May 17th in Vancouver, you should check the regional section of this website (Canada -West and North) where all us locals (islanders and mainlanders) keep in touch.

Hope that helps.
