So yesterday after work, i head up to this place I could potentially be sponsored (ish) by: K&T Soundwerks. They were working up a quote for me, and hadnt called yet, so I decided to go up there. Afterwards, I headed over to Wendy's & got me sum Chikkin Nuggets for dinner!

I get out on Rt 30, and head towards I-55. As Im getting on the ramp, im stuck behind a Semi... and I see 2 identical blue Subaru STI's behind me, and I think "w00t!"

After a barrage of cars passing up myself, the STI's and the semi, i kick my blinker on when the last car is starting to pass. The guy behind me doesnt turn on a blinker. I jump out to whip around the Semi, and the STI follows, although not aggressively (at first). Traffic lightens up, and were both at a 50-roll, so i rev my engine a bit, and I see him nod. We take off, up to about 90, and he only gained about 1/2 a car length on me... I was pleasently surprised.

He gets back behind me, and a bit further down the road, hes behind me this time, and I do the same thing... I gain on him till about 80 or-so, then he catches me & kinda rides me a bit till i go to get off on my exit... or is that it?

This is a photo of me getting off on I-80 to head to the track today... and these STI's behind me!

So, We are on the main road for 80, and I gun it. They actually took a while, but they caught up to me. The second STI decides hes not waiting anymore... Guns it, cuts between myself and the first STI, and takes off up to about 120, I respond my trying to keep up with him, but before we hit traffic, hes got 2 car lengths on me.

They get back behind me, and I gun it again, this time with some light traffic. Instead of following me, they stay back, and watch me weave through traffic about 5 times @ 90 or so.

I hang back, and do the speed limit for a bit till they catch up. When they do, the first guy looks over and shoots the thumbs up, and says "Good Job!". The next guy goes by and throws up the lil Devil Horns ("Rock On!"). and they continue. I follow them @ speed.

Following them, the road widens out, and they go right... and it looks like theyre heading to the same place as me. we get off on the ramp together... and sure enough, I head down to the track with 2 STI's in tow.

I pull in for my tech, and get out, fill my sheets out, etc. etc. etc. and the guy in the first STI is like "Nice, man. Reeeeal nice! Not bad at all for a Tiburon... that exhaust sounds mean as hell!" I thank him, and get pulled aside by the official cus i cant produce a licence (im on a ticket), so he calls a cop up... and im just like '$#!+'. cop pulls up "Why dont you have your licence" "Im on a ticket... forgot it at home" "You know you could get your licence suspended for not having that ticket, right?" "I know... you're not gonna ruin my night, are ya?" he thinks for a sec "Nah... Just keep my nice pretty quiet and you wont hear another thing out of me" so he calls in to verify my licence.

Finish tech, and head up to line up... this is what i see:

line. HUGE line. excellent turn out though! While waiting, i get chatting with the guys with the STI's... one is stock, and one has a STG 2 setup... exhaust, light as hell rims... pretty clean-looking too. after waiting an hour & 15 minutes... we finally get up there. Im paired with the guy with the Stg 2. I run like ****... my tiptronic incists on being tempermental, and double-shifting each time i shift, and i run a 16.2... the STI runs a 15.4 @ 95 (if i recall).

we line up again, and wait for an hour and a half this time, finally getting a second run in at 10PM after arriving at 6:30. Second run is better for me: I run a 15.92 @ 87MPH. Conditions werent the most favorable... it was 78 degrees, 50% humidity, with a 10 MPH wind from the south. Better than the last few times, but still nothing spectacular.

For those who were at the Midwest meet on saturday... that day would have pwnt teh face if we had been able to hit the track! It was cold(60's), air was still, and humidity was like 30%... Ahh well. Solid Motor Mounts and a Fuel Tune, and Ill probably hit the track again!

i dont understand why would you use shiftronic? more room for error, does not provide better accelaration
STI sure suked....are you sure that it was not 14.4s
in any case, try not to act foolish/ iresponsible on the public roads

Could be the elevation. Do you know the elevation of the track? Does the track have a website?

#6 · (Edited)
yeah, the track has a site: http://www.chicagolandspeedway.com/cgi-bin/r.cgi/index_rt66.html

Its supposed to be the best track in the country... if not the country, then the midwest. Its a damn good track, only about 10 years old.

And no, he did run a 15.4, he had just put a new clutch & flywheel on, and was being kinda timid... not to mention the *******es at the water boxes were soaking the **** out of it... so he slid all the way through 1st, and half of 2nd gear. It was the guys FIRST time at the track ever, so its not bad.

OH! And if you look in the Archived photos, they have a pic of me from a few weeks ago!

Ive gotten nothing but garbage times so far at all my ventures to the track. Of course, im Auto... love the tiptronic (or shiftronic, whatever). Usually launch @ 2000 RPM, hold it till about 5500 RPM and shift into 2nd (by the time it reacts, im at or above 6k), i hold till 6k to shift to 3rd (shifts @ redline).

Of course if anyone's got tips on getting my times down, lemme know!

#10 ·
beautiful stuff man.....you did pretty damn good against an sti

do you lift your foot off the accelerator when you shift?...or do you just shift...cause i heard it shifts faster if you lift your foot off the accelerator and then shift...

keep it up....AUTO POWER!!!

#12 ·
Umm i thought sti's ran better times then that. are you sure those are not base WRX

#14 ·
well, i was thinking the same thing..an auto with 18's and basic bolt-ons shouldnt even keep up with STI's. Lord knows i've played with a few STI's for fun and never came close to keepin up when they're spoolin!!! but at least ya had fun...good times

I can appreciate even slower than expected times considering their driver is making an attempt to improve and is doing so at a legal track and not on the streets blabbering what he's "supposed to run, if <enter excuse here>".

Generally, as you get more track time, your et's improve.

good run against stis! its kinda hard to believe cuz i had 05 tib se 6sp with I/H/E and now STi, and i can really feel the difference in power between the two but i dont no i guess the sti driver was a noooooooob! drive safe!

even the trap on that STI is just horrible...i say he removed the turbo to run that slow...ive seen them(and by them i mean a few dozen) run low-mid 13's bone stock full interior, and some w/ a full tank of gas...not to mention there 98-100mph traps...and there stupid easy to launch well enough to run mid 13's...

#20 ·
yeh bone stock STi's run low to mid 13s. and trap speed is usally 100~104.

#21 ·
^^^ Its easy to botch a race. The important part is whether he improves, since it's apparent he's hit rock bottom already. :)

#23 ·
the guy in the Stock STI ran a 14.8 @ 103 or 104 if i recall. This guy in the Stg 2 was going light on it because he had a new clutch, and he was a n00b @ the track (his first time). I just felt good because both of them were like "Not too shabby for a tib, man... and it looks a hell of a lot better than this thing!"

And to SeedWeed: Yeah, i usually just mash the crap out of the pedal. Of all the things ive tried, ive never let off between gears. Ill give it a try in the next coming weeks & keep you guys posted! :D

Hey Randy.....you want to go to the track again on tuesday?.....give me a holler

#25 ·
also try to do it in regulat drive / not using auto stick, powerbrake that thing....

#26 ·
Yet another member that I dont think ive met, that lives about 2 minutes from me...lol

66 kicks ***. Use to be my home away from home....and if you were at the one meet at my house....well....my home was less than a mile from the track, in the middle of nowhere.

Anyways, I've seen a few STI's playing around these parts. The new craze seems to be boosted bimmers though. I've seen 4, in full sleeper mode. I wouldnt have had a clue had I not looked to see the FMIC.

Oh well, sorry I missed that meet btw, I had my son.
