Aftermarket Amp Power Wire Install

This is a DIY on how to get your Sub amp’s power wire into your car WITHOUT drilling holes.

Tools you will need

- Philips head screw driver
- 10mm wrench
- 3 or 4 zip ties
- a stiff wire to fish the amp wire through

This is for a 2003

First things first, disconnect the negative battery terminal with your 10mm wrench. If your car has all the plastic engine pieces, take off the ones covering the battery. You’ll also want to take off the inside floor trim by the door, the foot rest and the plastic piece that’s in-between the foot rest and the floor door trim.

Now you’ll want to remove your front driver’s side tire. Once it is off, there’s about 9 screws(one of them will require the 10mm wrench) you need to take out for the tirewell to come down.

Observe the photos… I circled where the screws are in yellow and the order of the photos are from right to left.

Once the screws are out you can pull the flap down and it will look like this…

Looking to the right of the battery down by the back of the headlight there is a hole on the side with a thick black wire coming out. In my photos, I already installed the wire (the RED wire) so you can see where it goes. (Remember to leave yourself a little slack in the amp wire for when you connect it to the battery)

Image

After feeding a little into the hole if you look in the tire well you should be able to find where its coming out of.

Image

If you follow the black cable you'll notice that it feeds into a 2inch rubber gromet. This leads into your car. I cut a little hole into the rubber and fed my amp wire through it.

Image

Image

I zip-tied my amp wire right to the black cable going across the top of the wheel well.

Image

Image

I then took about 2ft of a regular stiff wire and taped the end of the regular wire to the amp wire.

Image

Now its time to find the hole that the wire will be coming out of from inside your car. If you go by the brake pedal and look up behind the dash to the left, you should be able to find a hole with some wires coming out. This is where your amp wire will be coming out of.

Now that you know where the holes are, you can feed the end of your regular stiff wire through and try to find it on the inside of your car. once you find it, keep pulling until you get your amp wire into your car. Then tape up the amp wire where you pushed it through the rubber gromet.

The hard part is over! I hope this helped.

Re: DIY: Aftermarket Amp Power Wire Install

no offense but im pretty sure it took me under 30 seconds to drill a hole in the firewall and run the wire through it probably roughly 20 minutes to get the wire to the same spot. took me all of maybe 10 minutes to run the entire wire to the amp.

Drilling a hole would be quick and possibly easy for some. I wouldn't know where to drill and would probably screw something up. I just felt safer using the existing holes. {thats what she said} :m_banana:

Re: DIY: Aftermarket Amp Power Wire Install

I drilled a hole for mine in the firewall. where the hole lined up in the engine bay was in the frame rail. there was a little preexisting hole that had a grommet in it I pulled the wire through. it worked out really sweet actually.

i stole your picture, the green circle outlines the spot where i drilled my hole. I pulled down the carpet so the amp wire runs under that into the trunk. like i said this hole leads into the frame rail where there's a preexisting hole I ran it through.

Re: DIY: Aftermarket Amp Power Wire Install

Thanks for the tips on the way around drilling on the car!

This is, by far, the MOST difficult car I have had to deal with installing a stereo.
I really dont understand why they cannot just deliver the car with RCA plugs, power, switched, and ground already in the trunk.
I mean, seriously, Mr Hyundai dude. You know probably 80% of the Tiburons and Genesis coupes you make are going to get systems...why not help us out.
Dam, at least make it where I can get wires through the car.

Before I installed mine, I had never done it before and there were a few DIY but there were NO pictures which made it harder for a newbie such as myself.

So, hopefully my little DIY with the photos makes it a little easier for others out there.

Re: DIY: Aftermarket Amp Power Wire Install

pre installed amp wires would be dope! i was wondering tho...ive heard u shouldnt take the 12v wire out of the engine compartment tho. so does this diy actually have it running in the wheel well or does taking the cover off just make it easier to run the wire thru that grommet/hole? im gettin 2 type r's and a brutus bx2009 lol

Re: DIY: Aftermarket Amp Power Wire Install

Esmokah,
I was just looking at this thread and went out to see exactly how i was going to tackle this situation when I noticed a little hole in the exact place you circled it in the picture. Looks like the previous owner had the same idea. Power cable ran in 10 min!!
Thanks for pointing that out man! Saved me LOADS of time!

Re: DIY: Aftermarket Amp Power Wire Install

Thanks for this DIY! I didn't want to drill any holes and this worked out perfectly in my 07 SE. The hole circled in green appears to be where my clutch goes through the firewall. They must have just designed all the body's with that hole.

Re: DIY: Aftermarket Amp Power Wire Install

Sorry if this is a total noob question, but should I be putting a fuse on the cable right after the battery?
I don't think it'll be necessary, but safety first, right?
