A guy that I met a while back has a modded Tiburon (03 GT V6). When I first talked to him it was quite obvious that he didn't know what he is driving. I asked him what year his was and he told me an 05, but I knew it was an 03 before I asked him. So I thought to myself, "This guys doesn't know what he's doing." So next I thought I would have a little fun and ask him what he has done.

He opened the hood and he had an AEM CAI, he walked me around and showed me his Greddy exhaust, showed me the interior and showed off his 7-inch touch screen and interior neons.

So I gave him credit for it and thought myself wrong for judging him so quickly, he had more mods done to his car that were correctly applied and complimented the looks nicely. Then he mentioned that he also had a chip...

"A chip?" I ask, "There isn't one out for the Tiburon yet, did you send it out to NGM already? "

"No, I got it off a dude from ebay..."

Than he asked me if I wanted to race in a few weeks when he replaced his transmission because it is slipping. He said we could put some money down on it.

All I have is exhaust, aluminum flywheel, and strut bars, which doesn't really add any horsepower at all. I know I couldn't win against an I/E Tiburon, but this guy doesn't know his Tib and that chip is asking for a beating. I also assume that he treats his tib like trash and the way his friend talked about how he drives I think I would definately have the upperhand in skill.

Should I race him just to "shake his hand" or should I try to race him for a lil money?

If you can win, there is a lil more cash for you to mod. If you lose then you have to deal with losing. Its up to you man.

Intake gives you much more power then exhaust (around 12 whp), exhaust - 4whp -5whp...

Go on e-bay right now and buy CAI for $50 (you can cut the pipe if you want to have filter behind the headlight) and take the money and the WIN! ...... Later on you can replace filter with AEM dry flow filter of eBay ($45 shipped) and you will have good quality intake.

Lots of words in this forum of a plugn play chip. I dunno.

more than likely it just causes the car to think the air is colder which will make it dump more fuel in (i think thats how most of the ebay chips work) ... which since the tib runs rich already with just IE will hurt him ... a tib with IE will beat a tib with just Exhaust ... like it has been said earlier, intake helps alot ... alot more than exhaust. your best shot is like a 0-60 or 0-80 race, starting from a dig will give the better driver the advantage and ending well before 100 hopefully he cant make up the difference in time, but he should beat you on the top end, bad shifts or not if you have the same type of tranny

This is How those ebay POS resistor/"chips" as they say work. It Fools your Intake air temp sensor into thinking the air comming in is around -30 degrees or max cold temp. This inturn adds more Ignition advance on the timming. Each degree of added ignition advanced can net around 4 hp depending on vehicle BUT what happens with these chips is that most cars already run pretty aggresive timming tables, and this causes the Knock sensors to pick up Knock retard and pull the timming back out anyway! Waste of money and you probobly loose power:3_headsha

Bored tonight so I am keeping an eye on the thread...

Another thing to consider is the fact that he treats his car like crap. His friend and his neighbor both told me that he will just sit in his driveway and rev it up to the red line so he can "warm up his car" and "keep the pipes clear". Apparently he will rev it up and keep it at the red line for a good 20 seconds EVERY time before he drives out the driveway. No surprise that his transmission is slipping...

There has to be some damage to his car from that.

race him. maybe around somewhere you are used to so you have a edge or where he wont be able to pass so you can beat him out and then stay ahead and get a couple hundred buck

It's probably going to be a drag... a legal one. On a course. The kind that innocent soccer moms in their mini-vans aren't going to get killed in.

But I would love to do that if I could have a gauruntee that no one was going to get hurt.

i think it would be fun. got any friends with 350's or rx8"S both fast very fast even with those mods those cars can do a 0-60 in just over 5. and with the rotory in the rx-8 you could keep it tight. or just use your and lose like a tib owner.

Hey I drive a soccer mom mini van when ever my tib is immoble. so yeah keep it on the track if you decide to get nasty. lol By the way I'd say go for it if you feel like you have the skill. quick question why did you decide on just an aluminum flywheel and not along with a performance clutch.......with light weight flywheel and performance clutch you would still have a decent chance

Had one... it went out and didn't have money to replace it so I went the factory warranty route.

The guy who had it before me put it on though.

Tiburons aren't bad cars, they are good for their class IMO.

My 1/4 mile kill list includes... (sorry I don't know the years)

EDIT: (The reason I won on some of these was because I knew the owner either sucked at racing or sucked at keeping his car at top condition or both, so I will not accept the credit on all of them. But I will say that half the race is sizing up the competition, which is why I think I will race this other tib. His tib is used and abused.)
1. Honda accord (4 car lengths)
2. Honda civic I/E (2 car lengths)
3. V6 Camaro E(2 car lengths)
4. V6 Mustang (3 car lengths)
5. F-150 King Ranch (1 car length)
6. Subaru Impreza base version (2 car lengths)
7. Nissan 240sx I/H/E(half a car length)
8. Subaru Outback LLBean Edition (1 car length)
9. Honda Civic SI (Barely)
10. All kinds of Mitsubishi Eclipses I/E (1 car length or more)
11. 2 Ford Crown Victorias (Yes they were both cops, and I lost them each on different nights)
and my most proud win

8. My friends GT Mustang, year 2000 (beat him by a nose) Just shows that our tibs aren't that bad. I have lost to other GT's though, so I am not saying our tib is faster than a GT, it CAN beat it though depending on the difference of drivers.

I have lost to...

1. GT Mustangs
2. My friend's Shelby Mustang
3. My friend's OTHER Shelby Mustang (Yea he's a rich mofo)
4. Third Generation RX-7
5. RX-8
6. Honda Civic SI (a different one, still close though)
7. Toyota Supra (I was toasted, I knew it from the start)
8. An EVO VIII (again I was toasted)
9. A drag truck

Total racing balance= +300 dollars
