CB Radio?

Has anyone installed a CB radio into their tib? Or any car for that matter? I'm going to be putting one in, but have a few Q's. If you have a tib, where did you mount the radio at and the speaker/mic? And a more general question, does anyone know of an antenna that is either completely unseen from the outside, or one that's subtle, but still works well?

Thanks

Really the only places I can think of that wouldn't require a ton of fab work like the in-dash one posted above would be in the glove box or remove the glove box and mount it where the glovebox used to be.

As far as having a good signal without the large whips, I'm certain it is possible, especially with signal amplifier technology these days. I couldn't tell you what brands or anything to look at. The question to ask is how far do you want your CB to reach?

Just out of curiosity, why?

Yeah, I found two cb's that I'm looking at, one is more compact with 4.5" wide and 2" tall, and the other is 6.5" wide and also 2" tall. But, both of them are freaking 7" deep which kills most places I was thinking of (glove box, sunglass holder, under e-brake handle). I hate to mount it somewhere that's more hidden instead of fitting it somewhere (I don't mind having to fab something up) but it's looking more and more like that's what I may have to do. Now I've been looking at mounting it behind the center console facing up, or on the side of the console facing up and kind of build something around it to somewhat fit it in, or taking out the ash try and cig lighter and fitting it in there. Only bad thing is then I'd have to relocate the cig lighter and I won't be able to use the mission plate area to store crap. The bigger one I'm looking at is the same dimensions as a head unit, so I'm trying to look up with people with car PC's put their radio...

I was hesitant to get one, but most of my friends around me have equipped their cars with cb's and talk to each other. And my whole car club is looking to get them for our road trips to shows.
I had one on my tib for a road trip.

i used a suction cup antenna so i could remove it. it was placed at the top center of the hatch, just low enough so the sunroof could open.

i put the radio receiver in the glovebox and had everything mounted there, granted this was just a temporary thing. from what i have learned the bigger the antenna the better distance you will get, i had a 3ft antenna and got about 15km range. furthermore the position of the antenna on the car is also important, fortunately mounting it in the center of the hatch was best but in other vehicles it required some moving around and playing with to get right, the permanent bolt on ones tho have better reception and are more forgiving for placement.

Good luck man CB's sure are fun on the highway

edit on my buick i had a 5ft whip antenna (trucker 2000) and got 25k average 30+ in good weather
Where'd you get the suction antenna? Did it hold on pretty well? If I can't get a permanent antenna that looks good or is not too noticeable, I'll be in the market for one I can take on and off. I'm only looking to get 5 maybe 10 miles out of it...

There won't be a "hidden" CB antenna that I know of. Antenna for Citizen's Band radios are tuned to the radio. There has to be something like > 3 feet in order to get the tune properly. Look up the Little Wil'.

Transmitting antennas (such as CB) are required to be resonant (design frequency that matches the radios output frequency) in order to operate. If they miss the mark somewhat you probably wouldn’t recognize the difference while in the receive mode. However, CB’s are also transmitters. In order for the antenna to absorb the radio’s energy it must be, within a fairly small bandwidth, on frequency with the radio. Failure to meet the transmitters needs means poor performance at least and damaged equipment at worst.

There are some Cellular-type antennas that you can use, but it limits the range on your CB way down.

I put my radio/mic in the center armrest. I added an external switch right below the latch... I leave it set to PA mode most the time, so i can throw the switch and yell at someone at a moments notice.

I'd say get the smallest one you can find, it saves a lot of work trying to make space for it.

Not that bad looking of an antenna (for a cb antenna), but a pain to tune.

i got the suction antenna at a local surplus store for about 40$ it held great, didn’t have to touch it the whole drive and didnt move from what i remember. it was suction with a magnetic lip. so the suction part was made of magnets. Worked amazingly, you should easily be able to get that millage from a 3ft antenna. it was pretty noticeable though lol i mean its not that often that you see a Tiburon with a 3ft Ariel coming out of the hatch lol

haha well yeah. If it's something like that I don't car what it looks like really since I'll only have it on when I'm using it, lol.

Do you have pics of the radio mounted? When I measured, the one I'm looking at wouldn't have fit. What kind do you have?

I don't have any, I just took the bottom out of the box and slotted it in diagonally... and then I had to hard-wire the mic in because there wasn't enough room for the connector... which is why I said to buy the smallest one you could find. If you want, I could take pics of my ghetto set-up this evening.

I have an old nightwatch that I bought during college (= no money) from a guy who worked at a truck-stop. TBH, I've been thinking about redoing the entire system to be less ghetto, or at least be more usable.

^Happen to know of a good cb that's compact?

I just bought a cobra 31" antenna. Was going to do the 21", but screw it. Both of them will look equally goofy.
