Since I am a newbie...I felt this was the best place to post this.

I have read some threads that mention the improved performance from a "tuned ECU".

1) What is an ECU and what is it's purpose?

2) Is this a stock component on an 06 Tib GT?

2) What would be benefit be from tuning an ECU?

3) When an ECU is tuned, what is being changed (air/fuel mixture, timing, rev limiter, or ? ) that causes an improvement in performance?

3) What tools or know-how are required to tune an ECU?

4) My tib currently has CAI and catback exhaust - headers will be added in the near future. What kind of performance improvements might I expect from my car with a tuned ECU?

5) What are the potential problems that can result from an incorrectly tuned ECU?

Thank you. :3_winkthu

This should answer some of your questions... then you can ask for clarification on the questions that aren't answered there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_control_unit

Some quick answers for you:
1. See link above
2. Yes, basically all newer cars (mid 1980s +) have them
2B. Not much, a few horsepower.
3. Air/Fuel and timing, typically
4. You'll gain some horsepower from the headers but not much more from tuning.
5. Burnt pistons and valves, blown engine (worst case).

In Korea, there are many shops doing direct modifications to Tiburon's stock ECU. But here in USA I've never heard anything like that for our Tibs. You'll need a piggyback which is an additional computer to the existing ECU.

The main thing ECU's can do that normal fuel tuners can't do is change the redline.
