Well, shipping was pretty decently normal. I was very pleased with Gruppe-S.com. Rims arrived yesterday and the tires arrived from wheelsnext.com the day before.

So tomorrow i'll take'em to a local tire shop and get'em mounted and balanced and then I'll post some pics of the setup.

Should look pretty mean. 17x8 +35 offset with 235/40/R17 rubber.

Car is dropped on Espelier springs.

Perhaps if it rubs enough, a genie will pop out the tib and grant me 3 wishes.

OK, so let me tell you, Merchant's tire around my way have some VERY incompitent people working there. It took them 2 hours to mount and balance 4 tires. They didn't even have to mount it on the car as I drove up with a truck with the tires/wheels in the back.

Then when they were done, because the tires are directional, they mounted the tires incorrectly and I ended up with 3 left tires and 1 right. So they fixed that.

Then when I took'em home to mount them and lowered the car 2 tires were flat. Because THEY DIDN'T INSTALL THE VALVE STEMS CORRECTLY. I mean WTF? This is what they do day in, day out, and they can't get this right? So after spraying all the valve stems and seeing little bubbles form I took 3 of them back (the 4th rim had the valve stem already installed from the factory so of course that didn't leak).

Spoke to the manager, which he was very polite and courteous and refunded ALL my money back and had it worked on by their 'master' tech (wutever) in which he had everything done in 30 min. (removing the tires and re-installing all parts correctly).

It pisses me off it took some othery guy 2 hours to make all kinds of mistakes and waste 6 hours of my day. But hey, at least I got my money back.

Oh, and they fit.

The fronts definitely 100% OK, although it's VERY close but it's a perfect close if you know what i mean.
The rears have clearance but require the fender lip to be bumped up at a 45 degree angle which provides sufficient clearance. Doesn't require fully rolling the fender lip.

SO for the record....
17x8 et35 w/ 235/40/17 tire on Espiler drop will NOT rub in front and only requires slight rolling in the rear.

Stance = bad@ss!
Grip = super duper. (I can't spin 1st with the clutch/flywheel from stomping @ 3500rpm like before)

May have to take it to the track and see what she'll run.

Geez, there isn't anything to take pics of yet! Just some rims in boxes and stack of tires!

Sheet, if you want pics of those I can snap them after class tonight but it'll be late and by the time anyone gets on newtib tomorrow i'll probably have it all done.

OH BTW, i weighed them on the digital scale at work and they came up 16.2 lbs rather than the 15.5 lbs Enkei advertises on their website. They get away with it by stating all listed weights are 'estimations'. bastards.

you were worried about your 18s making your car slow right?

I was doing some research and it turns out that my 19x8 at 25.x lbs (according to wheelweights.net) are really not to shabby on weight. A lot of the 18s and 17s that i was considering were around 22 (according to tirerack), so i'm not to unhappy with the weight of the 19s (if its correct).

I would be willing to go down to a 17 but i would not be willing to lose any width. 17x8s weren't all that common in the places i was looking and were usually pretty heavy and/or expensive.

Please weight the wheels before you mount the tires.

why did you purchase tires and wheels from two different places? did you acutally save money or did you just have to have that combo and where you bought the wheels from did not offer the tires as a package?

let us know if the car gets that much faster

does anyone know how much the stock 17s weight?

Yes, I posted that they weighed in 16.2 lbs (for a 17x8 w/o tire) on the scale at work in my second post in this thread.

Also yes, long story short it was cheaper for me to order the tires seperate from the tires and thats including the mounting and balancing costs AND new spline drive lug nuts off ebay (25 bucks).

I saved about 100 bucks this way.

I know it'll be much faster. I had a 2003 silver tiburon with 16 lbs 17x7's and all the same mods on my current tib (plus an underdrive crank pulley on the silver one) and i was running 14.5's at the track. It also didn't have a sunroof which helped on weight but lighter rims ALWAYS improve performance.
  • Less wear on the pads
  • Better braking performance
  • Better fuel mileage
  • Faster acceleration
  • Faster turn in (lighter rotation masses have reduced gyroscopic procession which makes it easier to turn the wheel while it's rotating).

Also stock 17x7's are listed around here as weighing 22lbs w/o tire but I can't confirm this as I haven't weighed them myself.

wow thats pretty damn good considering the only 15 lbs wheels i saw on tirerack were the gram lights (and maybe a few others) and they were at least 325 a pop. do you mind if i ask what the ball park was per rim for yours?

Do you know how much your old rims weighed?

Do you know how much the stock rims weigh?

I think stock is closer to 20 then 15 lbs but i could be very wrong.

you bought the rims right from the manufacturer?

Enkei lists them as 15.5lbs but hey, maybe the scale at work is off a little.
I paid $224.75 shipped per rim (total was 899.00 shipped) from gruppe-s.com.

Do you know how much your old rims weighed?
My previous rims weighed 26 lbs per wheelweights.net. They were the RPM R505's 18x8 (mesh style rim).

Do you know how much the stock rims weigh?
22 lbs I believe.

No freakin' way the stock 17x7's weight 15 lbs.

I don't think Enkei sells direct. Got them from Gruppe-S and they're located in Cali. My experience with them was very good and shipping all the way here to VA was quick and arrived on schedule.

Hmmm offset... true that. You can't wait? I can't wait. I'm tired of hearing my noisey ***, bald mix-match rubbers on my stockers. The road noise is rediculous. Although I was getting crappy mileage with those 18's, the N3000's were nice and quiet on the highway.

I'll be sure to post up tomorrow.

Bump for Pics.

BTW, I just realized they sent me some stupid azz BLUE valve stems. Whatever happened to like silver or some neutral? I have a RED car for crying out loud. Eh, i bought some ghey chrome ones although the blue valve stems are anodized aluminum and lighter....just don't match!

They go on tomorrow...!

yeah, they aren't too bad, ESPECIALLY for the price.

I paid $80 a tire for the 235/40/R17 size with free shipping.

Now the stickiest tire I'VE ever used would probably be a toss up between the Hankook K104's and Michelin Pilot Sports. The K104's are like a less expensive version of Michelin Pilot Sports which came factory on Tibs for 2003. Problem is they cost like 220 bucks a tire. The K104's were like 110 for stock 215/45/17 size. Little noisey like the Pilot sports but no suprise, it's like 95% same tread pattern.

But the N3000's I think are more affordable with just about the same amount of grip and were quiet when I had them on the 18's.

Man, yes they do! For some reason I had a slight vibration @ highway speeds, even after two balances and of course the prerequisit hubcentric rings with the aforementioned "donkers".

These on the other hand are silky smooth. Probably in the casting process. You get what you pay for rings true.

The 235's def. come in handy for first gear especially with the lightweight flywheel and the lighter rim weight. I remember spinning my 16 lbs Rev Model 6's on my old sliver GK with a 215 wide tire (Hankook K104's) at will, between 3000-4500 rpms.

Turn in is light (waay lighter than the donkers) and accel. has improved in the lower gears. I'll have to find that silly Lancer RalliArt and run him on the highway again to see how much of an improvement there is over the 18's (i'm sure there is).

BTW, it's ton's easier to take off in 1st too with the RPF1's and the Stage 4 6 puck ceramic. I mean night and day compared to the donkey donkers.

The RPF1's aren't as "flashy" as the R505's but i've always been more of a function over form kind of guy. Regardless, I still think it's sexy, but in a more subtle, racey kind of way. Even with the blue valve stems. :3_pimatyo

wow, looks great!

i totally called it in WayTooFast's thread about the rolling at the top of the fender in the rear, LMAO.
Espelir are how much of a drop? my car is a least a 1/2'' lower in back on a full pro kit; i would not be able to fit those.

#27 · (Edited)
Thanks man.

The drop i believe is 1.5" front and 1.2" rear. I'm pretty sure about those numbers and absolutely positive it's a staggered drop with the front being lower than the rear.

Oh and the factory 215/45/17 tire size filled in the gap slightly more in the rear as it's a slightly taller side wall than the 235/40/17. It's pretty dang close though, but just a smidge shorter. Probably for the best as I'm on the threshold for fitment with this setup. Maxium grip baby.
