Hey guys, this thread is for all the F/I tibs out there. It's meant for newbies who would like to add some boost to their engine. Here are a few facts.

V6
-Our cranks are factory forged and can hold up to 400whp, same with our rods
-Our pistons are slightly weaker, they can only hold up to 300whp and after that it gets iffy
-Our auto trannys can handle 400whp (80% sure on that)
-Manual..i wouldn't really suggest pushing the engine to 4500rpm with 9lbs of boost unless you have a stage 4 clutch :3_puh2:
-I herd the max PSI that our engines can handle with I/H/E was about on an assassin system 5-7 lbs, 7 is pushing it. But i herd it was done.

I have no info on the I4's but if any of you out there did boost your 4 banger please update the thread!!

Oh, and the people with F/I i would really appreciate it if you guys put down your stats, for example,
-S/C kit, Turbo kit
-PSI
-Internal upgrades
-ECU reflash?
-CAMS!
-And most of all $$ that it took!

Dyno graphs would seriously be appreciated!

actually a lot is from NGM, read about their short block budget racer build, they don't remove the crank and the rods. They just replace the pistons and the heads, and counterbalance the crank. But the 7lbs of boost if from my friend, he runs a S/C tiburon, but i think that was a 1 time max, he brought it down to 5psi. He swapped out the pullies for one run.

From my understanding the rings will only hold up to 300whp, the piston would do better if the ring gap was changed

And there's been a handful of people that ran more than 7 psi on a stock block. i've head zaion was at 10 or 12 for his 441whp pull.

You might not find alot of turbo kits. Everyone goes custom these days. but you could get the price it took to get they're kit tuned on the car. That might help alot of people out.

#10 ·
That's what i was hoping for, a custom turbo build that pushes 5psi usually costs 2-2.5k but i wanted to know what type of turbo, what type of intercooler they are using. Or the icebox, i herd good things about those.

this is a good thread guys im currently trying to get my engine ready to turbo buy getting the better parts put in so that i can run more boost. i want to have stage 2 heads and cams, ross pistons, and a stage 4 intake before i put the boost to the engine. keep the info coming im still learning about turbo systems. i dont know enough about them to build my own thats why im going to get the stealth kit from ngm.

They don't sell these anymore, well you can't get it directly from the man. So you'll have to find one that has been used. Don't forget to rebuild the turbo if it is needed. According to the dyno chart on importshark the setup pulled 250hp and 230lbs of tq.

They rate the system for 5lbs of boost. You can run a stock engine with 5lbs of boost with no issues. Cams + heads+ IM would put you in the 260-280 range.. No reason to waste money on the pistons!

Edit*
It came with an NGM Icebox..that's similar to an intercooler. But that turbo setup is simply beautiful.

15lbs requires major work..10lbs makes like 440 at the wheels 15 should be at 550? perhaps? that's an estimate. But you'll end up upgrading your transmission, changing your injectors, i doubt the crank and rods can keep up, and you already mentioned this but heads..its quite a bit of work let me know if you get it running! Also are you sure the turbo is capable of that much boost?

#15 ·
oh they make the NGM sniper kit because I just purchased it from Mike at Importshark plus he has the ICEBOX as well. The icebox is going for 1950.00 right now but I could get it cheaper. I purchase alot from him and get a military discount.
this setup is going on my 04 auto tib as we speak, it should be ready by next weekend by the time i get home from IRAQ for leave

Zaion, we need details on your car!
Theres been info about iy on newtib for around 2-3 years. Even have a member's page.

As said not all boost is equal as how it produced. Comparing turbo cars to sc cars is apple to oranges. For example, even if im called a dyno queen, i still make around the same whp at roughly the same rpm as a sc tib.

Torque, though, is a whole different story.

Most sc tibs will fail at low psi due to the torque they make at low rpm. Yet they will have more torque than any turbo tib at low rpm.

It all comes down to preference mostly. Each one has its pros and cons.

comparing pounds of boost is useless because 5 psi on a sniper, 5psi on a assassin and 5psi on a T04 turbo are all completely different and have varying levels of safety and produce varying amounts of power.

and from my understanding the crank will basically never have to be replaced, iirc it was rated more around the limits of a fully built ngm motor

#19 ·
Yea, the turbo would be different. here's what NGM says

you get 312whp from an assasin kit at 7-8psi, and they provide the 3"5 pully, so downgrade it to a 3'8-9inch and it should pull about 5psi, if my estimate is right doesn't that put you at about 250whp?

NGM says if you get a sniper kit that pushes 3-5lbs you make 200+whp..i'm not sure if that's at 3lbs..

Does anyone have a custom t04 build that they were able to dyno? i would be really interested in seeing the gains on that

so the idea that theres a max boost amount is wrong ... 7psi on a sniper is fine all day long, 7psi on a assassin you need to save up for a built block. 7psi on a turbo you are probably fine, but gonna make more power than a sniper. then even within turbo's there are different sizes, all boost is not created equal, 7psi from a t28 turbo is much different than 7psi from a t88. each effect the motor differently so that whole notion just needs to be removed if this thread is going to actually be informative

#22 ·
Never said max boost bro, all i'm saying is there's a varying boost you can use to come up with the same result. But the boost capability on a sniper is far less than that of an assassin that pushes a maximum 20lbs. Sorry if i wasn't clear enough :\

#23 ·
-I herd the max PSI that our engines can handle with I/H/E was about 5-7 lbs, 7 is pushing it. But i herd it was done.
thats what im talking about

i dont think we are talking about the same thing. from what i gather from the original post you are saying that the most boost a stock engine will handle is a set amount, which isnt true, im not talking about power differences im talking about how boost effects the motor 7psi from a assassin is far different than 7psi from a sniper but not due to the power differences, its due to the amount of air thats moved

#38 ·
Can you run an Assassin on the stock block if you downgrade the pulleys so it doesn't put out as much boost? I'd like to run one eventually but don't want to shell out for the built engine yet and I keep seeing good deals on them like once a month.

#27 ·
I'm looking for a decent sniper kit to push about 10psi..with an Injen intake SSAutochrome headers, and a borla catback what would you estimate my gains to be? And would i need to upgrade any internals? I plan on NGM cams and retarding it about 8 degrees and raising the rpm limiter to about 7200. Would i have any spacing issues?

#28 ·
So here comes the ? for ya all... now the sniper stage II with Stage 4 lower, 70MM triflo... I/H/E & good clutch... stage 3 or 4 perhaps with Phantom Grip LSD & 1.2 Drop.... is that good enough for traction & Since TC's reflash is pushing close to 300WHP what else would i need??

The only reason i am asking is bc i currently only have I/H/E and i am already having traction issues....

#30 ·
You will probably want coil-overs, so you can adjust and tune your setup to how you like and want it. I'd suggest a rear sway bar and a little wider tire with a low sidewall for ectra stability in the corners. That should get you where you would like to be. Then all you gotta do is get a good set of tires. Keep in mind everyone has traction issues at 300whp, especially with a supercharger set up.
