It's getting close to the time that I'm looking at probably switching to some high mileage oil.
Is it worth the extra cost?
And what's the better stuff as far as the high mileage oils go to use as there are several choices all "offering" the same benefits.

You can't go wrong with Mobile High Mileage which is what I usually use (sometimes Penzoil). It does not really cost that much, but you need it to seal up small cracks and other things that are caused by high mileage. Look it up if you want more info. I would def. start using an OEM oil filter as well if you are not already. Do the oil/oil filter right and not cheap because if not done correctly or with poor quality parts it will cost you more in the long run.

I usually go to Kwik Kar to get my oil changed and I assume the oil filter they put on is of OEM quality. When did you start using high mileage? I've always heard 75,000 is a good idea..

#4 ·
I've recently just switched to mobile one synthetic after hitting 80,000. Synthetic is going to be better than any high mileage oil.

I would not recommend using synthetic. Synthetic will remove oil gunk which is not what you want. For a car with over 75,000 miles you want that gunk to seal up cracks in the main seals, valve cover gaskets and the oil pan gaskets. When you turn to synthetic, it will remove the "gunk seals" and you may get leaks.

04GTV6 - Next time you get your oil changed I would find out exactly what oil filter and oil they are putting in your car. I would recommend getting a set of car ramps and an oil pan and change the oil yourself. An OEM oil filter is about $9.50 at the dealer and you can buy decent oil from Wal-Mart or Autozone on sale for about $20. Use the OEM oil filter.....Read this thread (http://newtiburon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=178806) if you need any more information.

I have a set of ramps and an oil pan. I just don't know if When I change it myelf how easy it is to miss something or not drain it completely and put in too much oil etc... And have no place to dump my oil..
So I can only get it from the dealership? Will all Hyundai dealerships have them in stock you think ?

#9 ·
So it's obviously not going to be sitting level, it will be leaning backwards. This will not effect the draining of all the oil will it?

#10 ·
If I remember correctly the drain plug is located in the back of the oil pan. So raising the front of the car shoudn't affect the oil draining. I use ramps and have never had an issue. Oh and im pushing 145,000 and I've been using Valvoline high mileage for the last 30k miles. Like others have stated, I would not recommended swithing to full synthetic on a high mileage engine.

#11 ·
Yeah, If anything I would do a synthetic blend, but not full synthetic. Do you use an OEM filter from the dealership or what do you use?

#12 · (Edited)
I will still go with the high-mileage oil.

Having the car on the ramps is not going to hurt getting the oil. Why do you think they put the drain plug on the back? I think you are worrying to much about a simple task. Once you do it you will realize how easy it is and you will take more pride in your car.

Yes I just switched to start using OEM filters from the dealership (which I wish I was using them long before now). Using the OEM filter has stopped many sounds coming from my engine bay. Just go to the dealership parts desk and ask for an oil filter for your car. If the dealership is a far drive just grab 2 or 3 of them on one trip.

Well I have heard stories about people putting too much oil in cause it didn't all drain out so they blew gaskets and seals.
And really it stops noises? I constantly have a slight dull ticking noise, but sounds "normal" to me form hearing other cars of similar age.

102,500 miles and i replaced my valve cover gaskets around 90,000 miles because of an oil leak and started using this type of oil and filter right after i did that and so far there haven't been any more leaks.

so... good, bad, or indifferent? should i switch to an OEM filter and a high mileage oil?

#14 ·
Yes. Switch to HM at 100k miles. I know most of them like castrol say "for over 75k" miles, but this is an import, not a domestic. Always use nothing other than an OEM filter from the dealer.

I use castrol GTX 10w30 HM conventional and it has served my tib well from 100k to presently about 130k miles.

#18 ·
If you use good oil from the beginning, no need to go to 'high mileage' oil. Synthetic oil does NOT cause leaks, the only thing that will cause the 'gunk' from being removed from the seals is detergent, most oils, petroleum or synthetic are high detergent. If you used good oil from the beginning and changed it, there shouldn't be any 'gunk' in your seals, synthetic doesn't break down like petroleum and help leave deposits, (gunk).

#20 ·
I bought the car used, so I have no real way of knowing if the oil used previously was "good" or not.

#19 ·
I think the high mileage oils are formulated with a slightly higher amount of detergent.

Now we know what filter to use (the oem)

So what high mileage oil should be used? Brand, weight, ect

Also, i live in florida

#23 ·
I use 10W-30, but I live in FL and it never gets cold here for long periods of time, obviously. I use either Mobile 1 HM, Castrol HM, or Penzoil HM. It depends which one is on sale and of course I use an OEM filter.

#27 · (Edited)
Just got back from Wal-Mart are here are some of the brands and prices...
All prices are for 5 quarts of 10W30

Valvoline Max Life Synthetic Blend for High Mileage vehicles- $14.00
Quaker State High Mileage - $13.00
Mobile 1 Fully Synthetic High Mileage - $21.00
Castrol GTX High Mileage - $17.50
Pennzoil High Mileage - $13.50

So what are the recommendations to go along with the OEM filter and a 100,000+ mile engine?

#28 ·
Well now I know that I need to use the OEM oil filter and just take the time to do the oil myself. Haha.
So... using the list that IWB1991 has which is the best choice? Does it follow the "you get what you pay for" policy?

#29 ·
Just got off of the phone with the dealer, the recommend and also use the mobile 1 for high mileage cars.

Also, after a visit to the mobile one website, i found that it is a fully synthetic High mileage oil.

Looks like this is the one I'll be going with.

#30 ·
I used the Mobil 1 High Mileage (says it right on the label about lasting 15k miles in big letters) but I still change it at like 5k.

#31 ·
my mileage is around 134 thousand and I use autozone oil.. I last used 10w30 castrol and a K+N oil filter.
before I would just take it to this shop, but then my dad started working there and told me to never go there again because they use crappy oil... recycled oil. idk what kinda of filter he used either.
I dont remember what I used when I first changed the oil with auto zone oil.. my tib runs like brand new though. I didnt have the extra cash for synthetic or the high mileage stuff at the time.

#32 · (Edited)
you should rephrase the title...i thought you meant high mileage oil, as in for high mileage motors....in which they are really more for old cars...

anywho, as far as a synthetic goes...i've always been an amsoil fanboy, and always will be.

many other oils have additives in them, which have been proven over time to actually wear parts even more...penzoil is one of them...royal purple was as well. i forget the rest. mobil actually used to be one...but they stepped up their game over the past couple years and their oils are actually pretty good these days.

as for oil filters, our cars don't like many of them. the OEM one is probably the best to stick with. amsoil is also a good one. k&n is good...um...purolight or w/e it's called is good...stp is often good. some filters "tick"...these filters mentioned don't for me.

NEVER get fram....EVER.

AMSOIL is the bestestest evAr!

when i used royal purple it only lasted like 1500 miles before getting low. no leaks. seems to just burn up fast or something but i know drag guys love it.
