I want to get my twin brother something decent this year for Christmas because he's really one of the most generous people know and really deserves to have something nice. He's got a 2006 R/T Charger with the upgraded Boston Acoustics sound system option and I'm looking into possibly getting him a decent quality sub & amp to compliment his system- the problem is I know there are a ton of genuine audiophiles on here and, to most of you, anything below $1000 is a waste of time. Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of money to spend, and I'm looking to keep it around $400 if that's at all possible. Any of your input is appreciated as always and just know I really know next to nothing about car audio but I'm doing my best to learn as I go.

what crack are you smokin? My sub only cost $120 and it is the best sub I have ever owned. The trick is finding the right sub for your applicaiton.

now, is that $400 for everything or just the sub and amp? Are you able to make a nice FG enclosure?

which one did you go with? the $400 is for both a sub and an amp, I'll have to either worry about the enclosure for later or let him decide which one he'll want.

I work for best buy in the car audio install department so I think I've got a pretty good idea about this stuff. First, you're gonna need a line level output converter if you've got the stock radio, it's what makes you some RCA's. You'll need some power wire and I would never go any higher than 4 gauge in the power and ground wires, anything thinner severely inhibits how much power you'll get, I think that the battery is in the back on that car so it might be more cost effective to just buy the RCA cable, the signal wire and the power and ground wire seperately. 4 gauge kits usually cost 60.00 and up. I would pick up some decent 10" subs and a sealed box. Kicker is my favorite brand and they have some comps that would be perfect for your setup, then I would match a good amp (kicker) to the RMS power of the subs. I actually have my old kicker comp cvr's and a 700.1 kicker VX amp, the subs are one 12" sub and a 10" sub on either side of it, 3 in total, in a box i built so I could let you have that for like 300 plus shipping if you'd like, I'll send you some pics if you're interested.

I needed a very nice infinite baffle sub for my application. The dayton IB15 worked great for me.

There are plenty of nice options for $400 for a sub and amp. Before I get into suggesting equipment, what type of music does your twin normally listen to and will the CD player be upgraded or will the stock one be utilized?

Another thing we need to know is what kind of music does he listen to? If he likes alot of rap or bassy music, then I would go with atleast a pair of 12's in a ported box. If he likes bass but not too much, then I would go with a single 12" in a sealed box. For $400, I would go with a JL 12w1 in their prowedge box with a JL e1200d amp. That was my very first system and it sounded awesome. Better that the s#it that they sell at bestbuy. If you want a clean sounding system, I would not be looking at bestbuy for a system. Let me know what you decide. Mike

My bad. lack of sleep. :3_slapen:

thank you all for your help with this, I really appreciate it. He doesn't listen to a lot of rap, he actually listens to pretty much everything besides gangsta rap or anything like that and no country either; a lot of modern rock (Breaking Benjamin, Linkin Park, Trapt, etc), Classic Rock (U2, Springsteen) and even movie soundtracks. I guess I'm looking for something to add a little more oomph but with a bass that can follow the music and not get muddied and incoherent.

your best bang for the buck sub will be a dayton HF10 Dayton is a proven SQ woofer. It has a nice sleek look with a plain black cone and surround and an incredible build quality. Great sub for only $125

Match it up with any quality 350RMS @ 4ohm amp and you should be good. Here are some amp suggestions.

Alpine MRP-M650

JBL GTO601.1II

Eclipse XA1000

MTX TC6001

Well hell im a metal head....he just needs something that kicks with the drums and rumbles a little with the bass guitar.....i would suggest 2 - Memphis 10'' subwoofers (u can get em for about 79 bucks a piece) u can run about 150-200 watts constant to them a piece so that means u need an amp that pushes between 300-400 watts.....i promise this wont disappoint him....if he already has the upgraded sound system he doesnt need a huge amp and sub.....good luck

How do you really feel about the JBL amps? I listened to some JBL speakers a while back and they were pretty trashy. Don't know anything about their amps though.

To the OP: I would say to start looking for a 10". Something in the 200-400 watt rms range should be pretty much exactly what you're looking for. If it was me doing it, i would try to get a JL Audio 10w3v2. Last time I was pricing them up I was finding them for under 200...maybe 150ish? It's been a while since I've actually priced stuff, but I'm sure they haven't varied too much. I think JL also has a great amp line-up, but they do cost...their 250 watt amp was somewhere around $250. That would put you right around the $400 mark, but might go a bit over after taxes and everything, so that's something to consider. Another option I'd think of is Alpine. I'm not sure what the going rate for Alpine is right now, but their mid-upper level subs weren't too bad and were going for a decent price last time I've looked them up. Either way, happy shopping and let us know how things turn out.

you guys are phenomenal, I can't thank you enough- I've been at work and haven't had much time to research everything listed above but at least you've all pointed me in a great direction. I just assumed get him two subs (at least 10") but what do you guys think of this for a single sub? From what I've read it got great reviews. Also, what does SVC and DVC mean when I look at subs? (sorry if that's a dumb question).

SVC--single voice coil
DVC--dual voice coil

I forgot what the difference is..

I don't know much about their subs, haven't really dealt with them personally, but I've heard from a trusted member here that their subs/speakers aren't very good. A couple of my friends have been doing ok using their amps though. If you're going to be using that site for sure, I would go with this for the sub. But you're better off getting it from a reputable audio shop if you want warranties etc. That's just my opinion at least. I've personally never heard any subs that compare to JL as far as how clean they sound. The power output is decent too.

how would two of these subs sound matched to one of the amps suggested above (JL, Eclipse, MTX, or even Kicker, etc)? I mention this because I can get a two for one deal on this and that seems pretty good to me and it'll free up some money to get him a box for it.
