The other day, one of my co-workers was telling me that the engine in a tib was part mitsubishi and that it would be an easy swap with a 3000gt motor. I gave him credit for knowing his sh*t about the engine, but I'm having a very hard time believing in his easy engine swap theory, if it's possible. So, I'm turning to anyone who would know anything about this.
Part Mitsu engine? I don't think so. As far as I am aware, the Delta is a proprietary Hyundai engine, just like the Alpha, the Beta, and the new Mu and Theta. It first came as a 2.5 V6 and now the 2.7 version. I don't think Mitsu had any part in it.

As for the engine swap, I wouldn't have a clue if it could be done very easily. Didn't the 3000GT have a couple of different motors? One was a twin-turbo right?

the older elantra/tiburons were Mitsu engines, the new 4-cylinders in the upcoming Tiburon, and maybe Elantra i think, will be part-Mitsu. as they were co-developed by Chrysler, Hyundai and Mitsu. I think the first car for the engine to show up in is the new Caliber
Just the Elantras prior to 1996. They had Mitsu engines and so did the Excel I believe. The first proprietary Hyundai engine was the Alpha, and I believe the 1st car in the states to have it was the Scoupe.

As for the Global engine co-produced with Chrysler and Mitsu, from what I have read the block is made by Hyundai and Mitsu and Chrysler will use their own cylinder heads etc. So far I haven't seen plans for Hyundai to use it. The 2007 Elantra is coming out soon, and is supposed to still have the 2.0L Beta just like it has now.

No one knows what will happen with the Tib, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if nothing changed with the powertrain. The Beta engines will still be used in the Elantra, and the 2.7L Delta will still be used in the upcoming Santa Fe. I wouldn't be surprised to see both continue in the Tib.
