ok, so thought I'd post up on finally getting to use my nissan gear-modded tranny...(3rd one so far?)...This project took about a year from start to finish, although now knowing who can do the work, I believe it can be done in days if not a month comfortably/realistically.

I went with the 3.812 fd ratio and stayed with the hyundai 1-6 gear set. I have to say so far I am quite happy with the outcome. The car is completely different with respect to gearing and thus makes it a little more forgiving (imo) to drive. I am breaking in a new clutch and motor so I will not be hammering it or getting new track times for awhile, so don't ask! I will post up when I have them. I will say that I noted a couple things:

old 6th gear 70mph rpm = ~3100 (correct me if I am wrong!)
new 6th gear 70mph rpm = ~2500
new 5th gear 70mph rpm = ~3100....

ok, so you guys want some part #'s w/pics?
nissan maxima pinion: 32241-8H504
nissan maxima fd gear: 38101-8H504
that is all I used

if you want to lengthen the 6th gear (to .63) with the hyundai fd or the nissan fd (should work on either tranny pinion set)
nissan 6th gear main: 32342-8H515
nissan 6th gear input: 32331-8H515
shims might be required for this and as always, do this at your own risk!

here ya go!

I am sure this will result in better mileage, but won't have results for a bit... as soon as I do I will post up.

as for cost...

nissan 3.812 fd set (pinion and crown gear): ~$280-300

then add money for:
machining
lsd
labor for the tranny guy.

these all depend on who you get to do it. whole thing could cost 1500 if you provide the tranny. that would include getting the lsd, machining done, and nissan parts and then tear down and put it back together.

I would say half is labor and the rest is the part cost

eh, personally I don't care about that because everyone says it starts to lift at like 140-150, and I sure as hell won't be doing that on public roads!

as for the pic... the nissan pinion is the one on the bottom-the one that is shorter and has no gears on it.

this guy is so right, gearing doesnt matter at all, air resistance is everything. Any one ever watch the video on you tube about the bugatti veyron?

its just simple physics.

take a look for your self.

well, only 330 miles on the new clutch etc, so still haven't gotten to stomp on it yet. once I can, I will post up on my thoughts about having the longer gears down low and see how much of a difference it makes. But, it is kind of cool to be able to take off in first after coasting in neutral almost to a stop and not have your eyeballs ripped out from the whiplash!

wow sweet idea grats man on a nice find

no... just no...

I could see someone doing this that wants more traction in 1st and 2nd and 3rd gear and have to shift less often especially at the 1/4 mile. Oh, and having better gas mileage on the highway is a nice bonus too. THAT'S what I could see!

setting the land speed record in a tib is just plain wasting everyone's time and talking about it kind of is like doing the same... but hey, that's not what matters to me.

Think about it, if you did this modification and left out 6th gear, you would have pretty much the reason why I did this in the first place... more usable gear down low.

.. oh gawd.. I can see my bank balance going to sh!t for another finacially draining mod.. LOL

.....Thanx brownnote.. *grrrr*.... ;)

This mod is friggin amaz-za-zing.. now where is that totalled maxima with that perfect gearbox!!!

.
ps... shot for sharing info... and what is so bad about a tibby getting real high top ends? sheesh.. I would kill to get my tib to outrun a entry level supercar.. :)

Yeah I remember that our "gear limited" top speed is near 158 with stock final drive of 4.428 for the 6 speed. Drag limited is more like 137.64 mph or 222 kph.

Only way to over come drag limited top speed is to do one of two things (or both!)... Lower the drag coeffecient of your car or increase your power output (among other variables).

With the new taller FD ratio of 3.812 and a gear limited top speed of 198 mph, this provides a lot of head room for the F/I people (and traction).

I can also seeing this slowing the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times on a stock car though. However a tib with a clutch and flywheel can easily take advantage of this mod for sure!

Hmm.. Do you know what the numbers are around for those of us with the i4 5speed? I may need to do something like this when I start pushing down heavy boost. As long as its around 1,000$ or so, that's not too bad and I wouldn't mind.

I've hit 140 in the Tib according to speedo... I will never do that again. I was bouncing at one point.

alpine, you are totally correct. you would need different ratios from the same tranny to make the swap, and the 5 and 6 are completely different. oh, and they have to be the same # of gears to swap everything out... ie rob parts from a 6spd to put in another 6 spd etc.

the tib will never hit 198 so don't ask me to even try... supercars do it because they have the power required and the aerodynamics not to fly like a plane etc.

now with respect to the 0-60 times etc, theoretically the same car with different ratios, the higher fd ratio would win, but the whole traction thing is limiting as is the fact that my car is kind of not stock in the power department. This would technically make an n/a car that had all the traction it needed more of a dog compared to the stock ratio. You could argue the shifting etc, but if you were fast both ways I think the lower fd ratio would loose. Basically, I would advocate this mod for people that are f/i and are having power hooking up down low.

if you want fuel economy, all you need to do is buy the taller nissan 6th gear (.63), and have it installed in place of the hyundai one-all on the stock hyundai fd ratio etc, then everything would be the same as stock except for having a taller 6th gear. If I were n/a, I think I would consider doing that and installing a phantom grip too so you have the shorter gears for acceleration, the lsd for traction and the gearing for better mph on the highway...

OK.. in theory my gear limited speed in my Tib is 278 Kilometers an hour. at 80Km it does 2000 Rpm and the speed is within 2Kph acurate according to GPS at that speed(80Kph).

I will probably get flamed for this but anyways.. My tib topped out between 245 and 249Kph (+- 150 Mph) according to Gps, clock showed just on 260Kmh so that filled the clock basically. On a way open road with flat areas and slight decline for around 15 Kilometers foot flat and no.. i have no video to prove and no, no pics.. and no.. I wont do it again soon... that long at WOT just isnt good for an engine. it took so long to get there. But if I do there will be a camera on ..

But the car felt perfectly fine at that speed. everyone says the car lifts, moves, bob an weaves, starts "floating"... I got none of that.. it just sat.VERY stable.. very subtle movements on the steering when changing lanes.. concrete highway, no camber, late at night.

But the basic point of my post is that the tibs gear ratio is pretty good as it is. Theoretically, the tibs gearing is pretty long. but with the Nissan gear mod and a good engine setup.. you cant go wrong..
Cost is the only factor on my part.

Agreed. Let's just all slobber over the better F/I low-end gearing and gas mileage (which these days, is a BIG deal as well) for a bit longer before worrying about rocketing the Tib into the upper atmosphere... LOL!!

I'm anxiously awaiting that review on the low-end feel (although no whiplash in first was nice for starters). :2_wink:

well, what do you want to know?

How does it drive?.... well, I have to say it is like driving an entirely different car... in a good way! I can drive in a parking lot in first (within reason of course), and it is more forgiving in traffic too with longer gearing.

How is the traction down low?.... ok, so I had a phantom grip installed too, and have traction bars on an otherwise stock susp., and of course first is still a challenge, and take practice feathering it, but I have almost total traction on my street tires putsing around town in second, third etc... and I am still using the assassin, hitting 13.5 psi...lovin every minute, but wanting more boost! It still surprises me how much traction I now have in second and with more power than before.

What about mileage?...eh, that is tough... I can't seem to keep my foot off of the floor long enough to get a good mileage amount, but on my built low compression motor, I am getting a solid 25-26 mpg when I was breaking in my motor and just putting miles on the highway... but it wasn't all highway mileage, so again hard to say.

What about the highway?... well, basically the stock 6th gear was like my current 5th gear, so having 6th on top of that is nice. It is pretty much only for speeds above say 70mph, because it is kind of a dog below that, and requires being in 5th... but totally worth it!

Was it worth it...hell yes it was/is still worth it! This is one of the best mods I have done to date. like I said, it is like a totally different car and I love it! I am surprised more people haven't completed this, but I suppose it can get pricey. However, if you go through the time/money to have a lsd put in, you should strongly consider this mod if you are going f/i generally.

Any other questions just ask!

Oh, and hitting the track as soon as it is cooler in arizona, so don't ask!

Well I'd say that's a pretty thorough update, and should more than keep me sasified until I manage to get mine done and back in the car!!

Thanks for following up with the great review!! 3_pimatyo

(BTW - how's that top speed? - LMAO)

#45 ·
Could you just get a 6 speed from a maxima and get the same result?

#48 ·
Yah, I figure the bellhousing is different since the maxima is a 3.5 right? To me it looks exactly the same except the bellhousing, but I cant find any good pics of one right now.
