Oil Change Intervals - what do you do?

I've been running Castrol Syntec on this lemon since '03 and tried the Edge version as well recently. Since I am driving 80 miles a day to work (freeway) I have to revisit my interval schedule again since I no longer drive city miles.

The industry has most of you brainwashed into 3,000 mile intervals.
Hyundai recommends 7,500 miles.
I've been doing 5,000 miles for quite some time.

Now that its 95% freeway I've been debating sticking with Syntec and up'ing the interval change to 7,500 or going to Edge (which guarantee's a 15,000/1 year change interval) and changing it once a year. Any comments appreciated and lets see what you do.

I do mostly city driving, with occasional several hundred mile long highway road trips, change about every 6 months, which is around 5000 miles. Using various synthetic oils.

Is this how often do you intend to change the oil, or how often do you end up changing the oil?

Personally I do 5000 with synthetic. Yes Hyundai recommends 7500 IF you're not in "extreme conditions" which includes frequent short trips, up/down hills/mountains, places where they use salt on the roads, very cold temperatures etc. The manual lists them all, but I think most people fall under at least some of those extreme conditions, in which case the interval shortens to 3000 miles. So, I figure 5000 on synthetic is safe if 3000 on petroleum is recommended.

For any possible warranty issues make sure you follow the manual.

There are so many possibilities and combinations that a generic decision for everybody can only be made on the safe side. That is 3k miles or 6 months. For me, I used Full Syn 5w20. It's not dusty here but I drive for a 1/2 mile in the cold morning and 1/2 mile in the cool evening. It never gets hot here. So I got a thin, quick warming oil. I change my about ever 6-9 Months even though I put good miles on the car during trips and races, the air and roads are pretty clean so not much dirt or dust. Everyone just has to factor in their own environment. Since most cant do it correctly then the easy thing is safer and makes and saves (warranty) the companies more money. I always felt it was kind of a racket.

With the knowledge from working at Jiffylube, I recommend a change every 3000 to 4000 with conventional, about 4000 with synthetic blend and 5000 with full synthetic. My personal favorite is Penzoil 5w30 high milage synthetic blend for my car.

Edit: if your driving 7500 miles with conventional oil, your an idiot. Your engine is going to build sludge very fast

I use the Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30 and I change oil and filter every 5,000 miles or after 6 months, whichever comes up sooner. The difference in smoothness after switching over to the Pennzoil Ultra (from Mobil 1 0W-30) was non-existent for daily commuting but I felt a difference when revving high and hard up in the mountains.

Ive been changing my synthetic at 3k, sure makes me think a little if I can stretch it a little longer...maybe I can.

change about it once in April and once in September. I do alot of short driving with random long trips during the summer. But during the school year my car sits 4 days a week without being driven. So I never really do a mileage point.

i use a custom oil a shop at my house makes themselves, only change it at 5k. he recently took it to korea and sold it to them, made a freaking **** ton off of it too.

Castrol Synthetic 5w30 every 3000 miles along with a new K&N filter. Pennsylvania manages to place some extreme conditions on vehicles like 100 degrees in the summer to 0 and below temps in the winter, lots of stop and go city driving, dirty roads, etc. No sludge build-up in this Tiburon. Sort of a "peace of mind' situation knowing that your motor is going to last longer and parts will wear better.

Been changing every 3k, last fill was Mobil1 5w30 with a Royal Purple Filter but I just got a stock of OEM filters and some Penzoil Ultra 5w30 for my change this weekend or next. Used to do 4.5k on my old RD Tib but just kind of fell into doing 3k on this one
