Re: pesading the parents

this is the kid that was posting on your lacrosse forum...

i pretty much gave you whatever info you need..and bottom line, if your parents are paying for the car...it's really up to what they want to spend, and what they'll feel safer with you driving...

don't be one of those kids that gets mad at their parents for not buying them the car they want..

Re: pesading the parents

yeah....thats' what I would do if I were you. Hell my first ride was a 1979 Chevy Beauville cargo van in a rusty forest green with wood panel trim, no back seats and no padding...it was a rolling steel box w/ wheels and a massive rear bumper. You should've seen how many moving and inanimate objects I've hit with that thing (no people or animals though, that's good). I've backed into some riced car (maybe it was a good thing..heheheh) on accident....all when I was 16 years old. I've learned alot since then.

So unless you plan on driving like you got rubber glue for tires, i'd find a beater to hone my driving skills.

Buy a cheap used car, and see what you want after you have a year or two of driving under your belt. A high percentage of teens wreck their first cars.
I beat the living hell out of my first car... you don't deserve a new car like the Tib until you have some experience under your belt. Like Balla said, get a used civic... learn the insides and outs of it... take it tray sliding... take it off-roading... side swipe some mailboxes... get all that crap out of you. Then, when you actually know how to drive (which too many people on the road do not know how to do) go look for something like the Tib.

Sounds like they gave you some fairly good advice. Just something you don't want to hear.

explain to them about the warranty which is still the best out there and the 24/7 roadside assistance. If a warrantied part goes out while on the road the towing is free and prompt. I was very impressed when I had to take advantage of that. It's a fairly priced car for it's market and if they compare it to what else is available in the same class for the same price, it's a good choice.

Re: pesading the parents

w/e ok if ur parents are getting this for ur first car they must have some kind of money in their pockets and have some idea that ur gonna crash it... So tell them that its a great car for the price, its got front and side airbags, and its got americas best warranty... 10 year/100,000 power train warranty, and 5, year/60,000 bumper to bumper warranty. That's what i told my parents :)... Good luck and u people ^^^^ need to realize that he is 15 and he's not going to take advice he doesnt want to hear... dont u remember when u were younger and didnt want to listen... But anyways if ur parents are willing to buy it for u than go ahead and get it.... its better than buying ur kid an $80,000.00 land rover for there 16th birthday (show on MTV)... its a hyundai not a bmw :) even tho tibs are like top of the line for both kia and hyundai

and do u mean persuading?? cause i dont think pesading is a word :3_headsha

Re: pesading the parents

tiburon wasn't my first car...drove a beater integra....had my fun with it, beat the piss out of it, and now i'm a pretty good driver so i moved onto a more powerful, more expensive car

gonna do the same with this, and by the time i graduate college, i shoul be an excellent driver, and can then move into a more serious price range..buying a car that costs 30-40k

its a cycle...by the time i'm done my post-doc and land my senior scientist position at the NIH :), then i can see myself spending around 60 on a luxury sedan...

learn on the crappiest, then get better and better things as you get older...kinda like when you first started playing lax, im sure you didnt go out and buy top of the line equipment for your first try-outs, you get entry level stuff, and as you get better and more experienced, you learn how to buy better equipment, and the correct way to use and not abuse it

you move on as you grow up, oh, and don't tell your parents you want to mod your car, my god they'll buy you an 89 civic if you tell them your plans

Re: pesading the parents

Be happy with whatever your parents give you. Besides, most people wreck a car their first couple years of driving, why do you think insurance rates are so high for teens? Would you rather wreck an old beater or wreck your brand new Tib?

Re: pesading the parents

look...they're just concerned for you. when a new driver gets a car, you're sure to crash...if not...good! i know i crashed my dad's rx300. i had a little bang in my camry. some drunk girl smashed into my tib while it was sitting in my driveway. not cool...

get a used elantra or civic...it helps you get ready. by the time you finish driving htat car...3 years? pass it on to another family member (younger brother, cousin etc.) or sell it, and get a car you want. will you still want the tib after you're done? i did...and i still do. but you may change your mind. good luck in your decision though. if you get a tib, welcome :) if not, you're welcome anyway :)

Re: pesading the parents

yea. i hate to say it but i agree...and i'm comin from your side...i got everything handed to me on a silver platter. my first car? 10k used car...1999 saturn sc2...4 banger...thing wouldn't go for ****...but its good it didn't. i needed something to learn on and stuff. i'm glad i got the used car with the promise to get a new one when i graduate, cause when i was 16 i was stupid and didn't know anything bout cars...just that i wanted a "cute" one. i did my research and as i got more into cars, i realized what i really wanted. the tiburon. i waited well over a year for that damn car. but the wait made it even more worth it. my parents bought it for me last april, 15k otd trade in. i'm 18 right now btw, 19 in april. and besdies. if you get that then what do you have to move up to? the smaller you start with the more room you have to grow. these kids that get vettes n stuff for their first cars then go out in the real world and don't make much money...no room to grow.

plus, about 90% of the 16 year olds that have come on here with the tiburon have totalled them due to lack of experience and just utter ignorance at times. and yes we've heard "i'm a damn good driver" from many of them. strange how they're normally the ones to wreck.

we're not here to discourage you from gettin a tib...we just thik you should wait til its "time" to get one. we're a family here, trying to give you advice as we would give to a younger brother or son. its exciting when your parents hand you keys to a new car. but sometimes you have to wait and dig a little to get there. i had to wait. and trust me...i love that car so much more now than if i had just gotten it when i wanted it.

Re: pesading the parents

I'm 21 and I didn't wreck my first car or my second car. I bought the Tib on my own and am glad I chose the car. Just because he is young doens't mean he will wreck the car.

My advise: Make sure they know about hte warrany like someone said. It is almost double what a Honda/Toyota/Domestic has, which means you won't have to spend as much fixing it down the road. Hyundai has also improved their reliability to match Honda/Toyota, not nearly as many problems as they used to have. It also has a good price for the type of car it is. Not to meantion it looks great....maybe Dad would like a "sports car" to drive every now and then (hey if they buy it, he can drive it once or twice a month if he wants to get out of his SUV). If they don't like the idea of buying you a brand new car, look into a 2003/4 used tib. You can find a good one for about half the price if you get a good deal.

Good Luck with your first car, whatever it happens to be.

Re: pesading the parents

Must admit that I totalled my first car.

On the flip side, for the price, the tib has been worth it. I've had her for almost 1.5 years and no problems so far. My automatic garage door opener has been fixed more times than my tib. If you look at most other vehicles of the same class, if you add all the options that either the tib comes stock with or you have the dealer put on, the tib still costs less.

Re: pesading the parents

Do not get a v6 tiburon as a first car, its too fast for a new driver. You're better off buying something cheap yourself that you wont mind wrecking and learning the worth of things. Something like a 90-93 miata, stock 240sx, 88-91 civic si, any year accent, etc i.e. slow yet potential for fun. Basically no one wants to see you end up in this:
Image

Have you even been behind the wheel of a car on an open road yet? Are you able to afford a set of snow tires for this car in winter (remember, they come with summer tires or what might as well be summer tires and they will not get you through a minnesnowta winter)? You're looking at $600 easily, just in snow tires, let alone for regular tires when they wear out in 20k.

Also, if you want to make an intelligent argument for your parents, learn how to use at least semi-proper english when doing so.

Re: pesading the parents

I got the Tib as my first car, after about 6 months of driving my parents cars, I did total my moms car, but thats because I got hit by a drunk driver, and I have got the Tib in a few fender benders but have not been at fault to any, 6/7 of them the car was parked. So not every kid that gets a new car crashes it. But I would recommend waiting for about 6 months to a year after having your license to get the Tib.

Re: pesading the parents

well, i've had 5 vehicles since i was 16, and i'm 23 now and i have never been in an accident. Of course i payed for all of them, but until the tib only one of them wasn't older than me. lol. My experience is that when a kid gets stuff handed to them they mess it up. Not all kids, but most who get crap handed to them manage to mess it up. Even if you get a crap box for 6 months. do what Xion said, hit a bunch of crap with it, do stupid stuff with it and get it out of your system.

And could a mod please fix the title of the thread, it almost reads like he is pissing on the parents.

yeah, i learned how to drive on a vehicle more powerful than a GTV6, but i wouldn't recommend something like that for anyone...

Re: pesading the parents

definitely offer to take a used one... the tib is my second car, I bought it for 11,900 dollars, then paid 2g's out of MY pocket, and traded in 4k on my first car...so i only ended up having to finance 5900, which my parents cosigned on. They pay it while i'm at school, I pay while i'm at home...

that was their idea though, i could pay it on my own, but they want me to focus on my studies and not have to work enough to make a car payment...besides, the car payment is dirt cheap

Re: pesading the parents

90% of 16 year olds can't handle a car like a tiburon for their first car. Now you may be one that can, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you probably aren't one of them. Just cool your jets, it's not the end of the world if you don't get this car, believe me, you have a lot more life in front of you, and plenty of mistakes to make.

Re: pesading the parents

well my man, i HIGHLY suggest u get yourself a used car. and jus cuz its used doesnt mean it has to be crappy-get a 240sx, or something like that. im pretty sure getting a tiburon at 15 or 16 also has a little something to do with ego and image. in my personal opinion, u dont need either in high school, cuz it doesnt count for sh!t when ur in college. trust me-there will ALWAYS be someone driving a better car than you. but chances are, if you get a tib and wreck it in ur first year, your parents are most likely gonna sell it, cuz insurance will be astronomical. a beater like a civic sounds like a bad idea now, but trust me-it makes for one helluva money saver. insurance, gas, and whatever else. and if u do get into an accident with the beater, youll be all the wiser when u get a new car later on down the road.
GET A USED CAR. i CANNOT emphasized this enough. you have no idea what kind of responsibilities come with a car, let alone a new one. and have u ever considered that 20 g's is a lot of money? think about it-would u be willing to shell out that much on ur kids first car, who never had a car before? who is 15-16? used is most definitely the way to go for a first car. NO kid whos 15 or 16 needs a brand new tib as a first car.
