Quick oil question, switching to synthetic.

Hi all, so I recently purchased my car and it's about due for an oil change. I haven't really checked it out yet is the filter pretty easy to get at in the V6's?

But the real question, I want to go full synthetic and have no idea what oil has been used in it previously. My parents mentioned to me that they've read that it's not good to switch between regular and synthetic, but have no idea how much truth there is to that.

Any ideas or advice? Could it really cause any problems? I was thinking maybe going with like a partial-synthetic on this change and then a full synthetic next time to kind of "ease it in" haha. Don't even know if that's necessary though. I also have no manual for this car, anyone know off the top of their head the amount of oil to use and grade (I'd assume around like 10w40 but dunno)?

Thanks! 03 GT btw.

Yeah break it in for 3k miles or so with dino oil then switch to synthetic. However switching to synthetic at higher milage has caused problems for some, not just with tibs, but high milage cars in general. I switched to a synthetic on my first car. It was a 1996 pontiac bonneville SE. I changed at 78,000 and at 92,000 it was done. I wouldnt change to synthetic at high mileage personally. Switch early in your engines life, and dont switch back and forth. I use Eneos synthetic oils personally. 5w-30 is like $~35 for 5quarts. I use 5w-30 in the winter and 5w-40 the rest of the time. The best way to find out if your car likes the oil your using is to get a UOA (used oil analysis) from a company like Blackstone Labs.

warm your car up about 5-10 min then change the oil so it flows easier. it's fine to switch to synthetic its not that big of a deal anymore like it used to be. the filter is also really easy to get to so don't worry about that. i would reccomend using 5 quarts of 5w-30 which is what i use.

i would recomend using 4.76 quarts of 5w-30 as thats what the factory specifications are.

Given the mileage on your car, I would suggest either switching to a synthetic blend or just stay with a good quality regular oil.

Our V6 Tiburon use 4.75 quarts. You should be able to change from mineral out directly to full synthetic without any problem. In fact high mileage itselft shouldnt be a problem either. If you expericience problems is because your engine is not well maintained or you are not using the correct oil weight for your engine.

May I recommend you Mobil 1 5W30. I use Mobil 10W30 and am very happy with it. Many people say ExMo's Mobil 1 10W30 sucks , etc and there are better oils like Royal Purple , Eneos or AMSOIL. These oils may or not may better but what I can tell you is that Mobil 1 is good stuff. ExxonMobil is a very serious company that stand behind the products and invest tons of resources on R&D to put a high quality oil in the market. The have been in the fuel and oil business for the last 125 years. So this guys know their business.

i just put some mobile1 5-30 in mine and i only have 12k miles on my tib.

the mobile 1 is good quality but top of the line would probably be something like royal purpal with was only about $1.50 more a quart than the mobile 1 i bought

Generally it is ok to switch to a synthetic oil. The promlems arise when you keep switching back and forth. Also you shouldn't switch on cars with higher milage, the additives in the synthetic may cause your seals to leak because it will be cleaning out the sludge that has been plugging them. I think your best bet would be a synthetic blend. Mobil Clean 5000 is a very good oil, it is a blend oil with synthetic detergents to keep your engine clean on the inside but doesn't cost quite as much as full blown synthetic. However, it does cost more than most traditional oils, the trade off is going 5,000-8,000 miles. Just remeber that even though the oil will last 8,000 miles doesn't mean it wont be full of junk. There is also a Mobil 1 performance filter you can use with the oil. If I do it myself with Mobil Clean 500 it is about $25, at a Mobil Lube center it is about $50. But trust me its a good oil, I used to work for a Mobil distributer and they stand behind their product all the way, offering a full engine warranty for any lubrication related problems. As long as you don't get your oil changed at a place for $9.99 where they practically pour water into your motor, you should be ok.
