I bought a tiburon and wanna build on it but I the first thing I wanna do is convert it to RWD so my question can i use the sub frame from a Genesis Coupe to accomplish the FWD to RWD conversion being that the Genesis Couoe is the successor to the tiburon and if i can't use the early year model Genesis Coupe does anyone have any ideas as to what subframe i can use to accomplish the FWD to RWD conversion

Ha, you’re not the first to have this idea, and as far as I know, this idea has never gone anywhere. Everything will have to be custom. Nothing from the genesis fits on the tiburon. You could probably buy a used genesis for less than it would cost to do a RWD conversion on the tib.

the only real possibility to get a RWD Tibby, is to get a trans/diffs from an AWD Santa Fe and disconnect the front axels.
but that is still a WHOLE lot of fabrication and custom work.
not mentioning the cost of the parts.

Here's a concept, since it's all gonna be custom anyways,
cut out the floor pan in the trunk area and custom fabricate a new firewall and mounting points so that you can mount up a front subframe (carrying the engine and transmission) to the rear of the car.

this involves:
  • custom firewall
  • extended radiator hoses
  • custom wire harness
  • custom fuel cell and fuel filler neck
  • custom glass rear window between driver and engine
  • custom exhaust
  • custom rear strut top hats and spring setup
  • custom power steering setup (possibly electric power steering rather than hydraulic)
  • custom AC lines
  • custom brake lines
  • custom parking brake setup
  • custom vented rear windshield
  • custom ducted quarter windows as air intakes
  • custom throttle linkages
  • custom shift linkages
  • custom clutch line
  • custom upper transmisison and engine mounts
  • custom toe arms to replace tierods
  • custom brake booster setup
what can be reused:
  • engine
  • engine subframe
  • transmission
  • bottom engine/transmission mounts
  • suspension arms from the front excluding tierods
  • front knuckles/hubs
  • bottom portion of front strut
  • OEM headers
  • coil packs
  • accessories
  • ecu
  • axles
What you will need to add back to the front
  • a second front subframe
  • a second set of front suspension arms
  • a second set of front struts
  • a second set of front knuckles/hubs
  • front brakes

that has been done yes.

personally if i had the time and money to be doing a conversion, i'd be going the mid-engine rwd route i described using the v6. wouldn't be trying to find driveshafts or another transmission or a whole other car's rear suspension. so much is gonna be custom anyways if someone were to do a rwd conversion. might as well copy some european exotics or the Hyundai RM19 while you're at it

basically do this guy's project, but make it less complicated (no more custom pushrod rear suspension) to avoid running out of budget

jus buy a gen coupe, it ill be cheaper in the long run, and you wont have to spend 3 years building the custom parts for it... gen coupes go for like 4-5k right now... these things are gonna be the future 240sx... cheap easily modded rwd car... these things will be hard to come by at some point, so miught as well get one while you can, and put it aside/ use it as a daily till youre ready to mod it.

If you REALLy wanna waste your time and money like me, ( i suggest you do not), you will need a drivetrain from an early santa fe, or later tuscon.... or going the kia route get a sorento drivetrain.... OR do something completely custom, buyt then at that point why....

You'll need to completely reengineer the rear suspension.

cutting body panels/ creating mounting space/ tub for the differential/ suspenion The rear of the frame gets real tight in the wheel well areas. You'll have to go WIDER outside the frame of the car, cant go in too much because of said frame design.

coming from someone who is currently in this mess... IT IS NOT WORTH IT, unless you love working on cars, and really want to build a project. The amount of fabrication time/ Money that is involved with this, is quite staggering. Do not let any of us scare you away from doing it. But converting these cars to rwd/ awd IS possible, but you need to create a serious plan of attack. The parts from other hyundais and kias should be able to be retro fitted/ customed in. BUT they are NOT bolt on swaps. The tib seems to have all the components/ space to have had a rwd system in place from factory, and then decided to make it fwd for cost purposes.

the most important question you should be asking yourself is:
why am i building this car/ what are its goals... are you building something for yourself, or are you building something that you hope to become popular from...
Setting realistic goals is important, not rushing and taking your time is jus as important.
