Squeaky Rear Hatch

I have a 2004 Tiburon GT, recently my rear hatch has been squeaking something awful every time you hit a bump or go over uneven pavement. I have a rear strut bar that i put on over the summer, and i don't know if that would have anything to do with it. If you have any ideas please let me know because i am going deaf using the radio to block out the squeaking, lol.

Thanks

That is odd. I've never heard of the hatch squeaking. I would think that it would be pretty secure with the latch and the hinges and all that goodness. Make sure it is your hatch and nothing else. If it is your hatch, I would recommend some WD-40 on the hinges.

i think i know what your talking about. mine does it also but i dont have a strut bar tho. it's very annoying. this weekend im going to tried to find out what it is!

yes, my hatch ALSO squeeks for some reason. I'm sorry, i can't help you until i fix the problem myself. I'm going to try some WD-40 though, that usually works for my "squeeky" problems.

Try greasing up the struts. And put some WD40 or better yet Graphite Powder in the hinges. Also maybe some machine oil or more Graphite in the springs that pop the hatch up when you open it.

Those are all of the culprits I can think of.

it'd guess the struts but i have no idea haha

Struts is my guess..... I have that stupid squeek too, but only when it gets cold out.... I'd try greasing them up a bit too.

I'd bet money it's your rear sway bar bushings. Try greasing those up.

i think i could be the sway bar bushings too. Just put and ark on and now it queaks somethin' fierce!

Thanks for all of the advice. After talking to some mechanics I think that it is the rubber mounts that the rear hatch sits into. They suggested putting some silicone spray on them, will let you guys know if it works as sone as i do it.

1. Don't WD-40 or use any kind of grease on the pistons (chrome parts) of the hatch struts. Once those are greased, it will attract dirt and dust that will wear them out a lot faster. The only thing you can do is to swab the pistons with rubbing alcohol to keep them clean.

2. Does the squeaking improve when the weather is warmer or the heater kicks in? My rear hatch springs, which are the two springs by the hatch latch squeak/rattle when its cold.

The only place that i put silicone spray on the rubber stoppers on the side of the hatch. I tried this before i came to work today and it did not help. The squeking is not as bad when the heater is on. I don't think it is the latch springs because it sounds higher up, towards the middle of the door.

I actually had the same problem.... it may not even be the struts.
open your trunk and look at the black plastic nuts right underneath the wing.
these are the mounting points for the wing. tighten these bad boys up.
i had the same sqeaking and it was my wing. not a promise but that was my sqeaking problem and after tightening everything it finally stopped after the WINGnuts.
good luck

I have concluded that my problem is the rubber stoppers that the rear hatch sit into. I sprayed Sea Foam lubercant on it yesterday and it made it squeak more but it was not as load, and after talking to with my uncle i am going to try and clean off what i sprayed on it and trying dry Vspray.

My problem is that it only squeaks when it is cold and for the last couple weeks it been like 50 on my days off so i can't test it, lol. Will let you guys know if the dry graphite works.

You mean the little round rubber plugs that screw into the hatch? If anything, those should dampen the vibration between the hatch and the bumper.

Or are you talking about the two springs that sit on either side of the catch for the trunk latch?

Yeah the squeaking is from the plastic piece on the hatch and the rubber bumper that is attached to the vehicle. If it is warm outside like in the 40s it doesn't make any noise or if i have been driving for awhile and the car is warm the noise will go away. And after i sprayed the sea foam lubircant on them it made them sqeake more but the squeak was not as loud. So either tohight or tomarrow i will try and clean them off and spray the dry graphite on them.

If you have any other suggestions i am open for anything.

So put some kind of dampening material like felt or rubber on the plastic piece by the latch catch.

Last night i tried a diy that used felt strips but when i was done my trunk would not close. The worse part is that the felt strips that i used where really thin so i don't have much clearance to put stuff on those rubber stoppers.

Mine squeaked too, but only if I hit a small chuck hole or hit a speed bump to fast, mainly when it was around 50 degrees or below. Don't know it you are still looking for a solution, but I sprayed silicone on the hinges, struts and any rubber I could find that had to do with the hatch. Especially around the rim. Squeaking stopped. :3_winkthu

my hatch just recently started to squeak (at least I think it's the hatch). I can hear this creaking noise when I hit a bump or there is a dip in the road. It may be the cold weather, but two weeeks ago it was much colder and no squeaking and now there is.

It is driving me crazy I can't hear it from outside though

I may have to try what sandy said I hope it stops

Mine ended up being a combonation of the rear hatch rubber stoppers and the rear sway bar. When i sprayed the hatch it changed sound but did not go away and after i sprayed the sway bar bushing it all went away.
