so I pull my car into lab one day at class to find out why its making a horrible squeaking noise... the tensioner for the serpentine belt was hanging off by about three inches. the tensioner was being held on by one bolt that was about halfway out. the other bolt was completely missing. I'm thinking ok, wtf? then I see the tensioner shaft was sitting on top of the idler pulley for the timing belt! the back of the tensioner shaft is ground down about a half inch. awsome. luckily it ground it evenly and there wasnt any slope on it. I pulled off the timing covers and checked everything. the tensioner hadnt extended all the way and there was still adequate tension on the belt. thank god. all in the while I saw the reason why the serpentine tensioner came off. the bolt flipping broke! how the hell does a bolt break? I can tell you. because hyundais genius engineers decided to put too small of a bolt in there in the first place. I didnt even overtighten these bolts or anything! I torqued everything down the the proper specs with a torque wrench. damn ****** hyundai engineers. I should have a word with them, this could have been a very costly mistake but luckily I was really really lucky and there was no serious damage. sorry If I bored everyone... im just venting. I'm seriously thinking about just taking out a loan for a next gen motor. anyone know the going rate for one of those?

you know sometimes when parts are made (In large quantites) you are bound to have one or two have fatigue failure....just a thought there....and it doesn't only effect Hundai...go look at some GM models...especially cavaliers, in class I had 3 bolts break trying to remove them....and yeah they just snapped...

repairs suck...I wish engineers would think of that sh!t when they design it.....hey why not hide this wearable part behind this wall of crap that is almost impossible to remove with out screwing something up, or taking 10 years to fix.

no kidding lol. try just changing the oil on a lexus is300. getting to the filter sucks ***. its like well they arent going to change the oil that often. lets hide it in the most inconvenient spot ever. its not like they could have run those oil lines throught the block like 4 inches higher or something?

Neon guys running the SRT tensioner with big cams will drill/tap for a bigger bolt. Maybe that's possible in this case. A PITA for sure but might give you some added security.

I had a crappy Celica that had the tensioner drill its way out of the timing belt cover back in the day. Toyota quality? :3_winkthu
