I currently an owner of a 2003 Hyundai Sonata that I'm been somewhat satisfied with. I'm not getting back into the mode of wanting a sports car so I was looking at taking advantage of that Hyundai owners incentive and get the 2005 Tiburon SE with the 6-speed manual transmission. My choices are the new 2005 SE Tiburon, '05 Toyota Celica, or '05 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I'm leaning heavily towards the Tiburon because I like the body style but the interior dash looks alot like the sonata's which was kind of plain.
I've also been reading in some reviews that the Tiburons have issues with the clutch and flywheel at around 17,000 miles. I drive about 30,000 miles a year so that would mean that I would have to replace the clutch/flywheel twice a year. Are many of you that own Tiburons experiencing these problems as well or is it some bad seeds that scream the most and grab the attention?

No man there are allot of problems with the clutches s you can read in some of the forums. But ideally it is how you drive the car. I had my stock one go out at 27,000 miles and I put a spec stage one and i have had no problems since I have 60,000 now. So I really think it is how you treat it and take care of it. The tib overall is a great car as far as maintenance is concerned

The clutch issues were fixed in 2004 I believe. Its not that the Tib eats clutches, but in the 03 models, Hyundai used a crappy clutch that went out quickly. If your clutch did go bad, which as I said, I think the 04s and 05s use a better clutch, replace it with a good aftermarket one and you will probably have traded the Tib in years from now before the clutch goes out again

I got an 04 GT 6speed and now I feel guilty for not waiting a few more months and getting a 05 but I was exited on geeting a GT and the main reason was it was going to be a manual, but I'm still very happy I got it the only thing I like about the 05's are the new headlights and bumper, the rest of it is the same basicly. To get the 6 speed with the high spoiler that I have like my current car now, I would have to get the SE model in 05 they've changed there packages a bit.

(Sonata < Tiburon) The only "person" who will tell you to keep the sonata is some one who has one.....
they have the same engine, pretty much weigh the same, and the sonata costs less initially, and thanks to insurance, will continue to cost less. there's only one reason to get the tib, and i already mentioned it in my first post.

I'm a teenager, and as nice as my 2003 Sonata was, I wanted a sports car. The 05 Tib SE fit the bill, and I bought it. I thought it would be no different to drive, but it's an entirely different feel. In the Sonata, you're sitting pretty high and the car doesn't white-knuckle the road like the Tib does with its low stance. It just feels more like a driving machine, and I haven't regret my decision since. I've had my Tib for almost a month, now.

theres nothing wrong with wanting an attractive car...

sonatas remind me of old people.

i'm a young adult, I like to have fun, summer's at the beach are my favorite thing...the tiburon reflects that personality for me

and the tiburon is not a sports car, my god please stop saying that people

Tib's a great looking car. I've had no issues but I also have an automatic. Overall, it's been a very reliable vehicle and to this day, almost a year and half later, I still get many compliments. I've had some drivers of some fairly expensive sports cars deliberately try to catch up, so that the drivers can get a better look at the tib. It always shocks them when they find out it's a Hyundai, lol.

I traded in my 01 Sante Fe on 03 Tiburon...the sports car bug got me...I have almost 29,000 miles on mine and have had no clutch problems....my best friends weren't so fortunate...one replaced his clutch at 12,000 miles and the other replaced his a few weeks ago at 10,000 miles...both of them were 03's as well....guess I got a good one??

I love my tibby. I graduated from a 02 neon sxt. Tried for a new SRT-4 but could not place the payments where I wanted them. than tried out a 04 Celica GTS and something about it just did not feel right. I laughed at my dealer when he suggested the Tiburon. I had not even really notcied the complete body style change. And even before that I tried out a Civic coupe(yuck)A VW jetta 1.8 turbo(dont know what the hype is about), And a Accord Coupe 4 banger(why the hell is this so expensive). I dont care what people say, I love it. Its fast enought for what I need her for, after all im not in Fast and the Furious Cali.

Thanks for the inputs guys! I would like to keep the Sonata but I already have too many miles on her so I'm looking for a sportier car! I had to sell my '69 camaro a couple of months ago to buy a new house so I'm getting the Sports car blues! I need something to feel the void and I was looking at the '05 Tibs because they look really nice compared to the eclipse and the celica but the fact that I will put alot of miles on the car within a year, I didn't want to have to deal with replacing the clutch twice a year! When I stop by the dealership to take a test drive, I'll inquire about the clutch but I doubt the salesperson will know anything about it! They'll just blow smoke up my arse! I'm looking for a car that I can "trick-out" and "mod" so any other suggestions before I hit the pavement?!?! It's going to be an '05 model whichever I get!

Tiburons drive NOTHING like a Sonata, they're two completely different animals. You cannot drive the Sonata like it's a sports car. If you want a sports car, you can't keep the Sonata and convince yourself that it's almost the same thing. A V6 Sonata might go in a straight line at about the same speed or not that far off, but once you hit the twisties, it just ain't fun.

As for the clutch thing, if you're driving 30000 miles a year, I imagine a lot of those are highway miles, and those are nice and easy on the clutch.

The Sonata's a nice highway cruiser, but I wouldn't take it to an autocross or salivate over the thought of taking it over the previously mentioned Route 2 into the Berkshires. That's why I have a Tiburon too.

The Tibby is deff a fun car to drive and a great value. Keep your options open though. The new Chevy Cobalt Supercharged will be out soon, although youll be paying around 21,5 for it altogether I believe. Or check out the new JettasGLI's with the 6 cylinders in them. They are a completely diff game than the 1.8 turbos and can be turned into real monsters with the right mods.

Isn't the Cobalt SS already out? Not very attractive looking cars, but put down a lot of power.

In some areas the Cobalt has not been released because they are still trying to push the cavaliers with huge cash back incentives. i dont like the ricey spoiler either but I believe its the right step into trying to compete with Honda and Mitsubishi. I even read that a the new gen tibs were a major factor for Corporate Chevy to bring the Cobalt to life from concept because of the huge response hyundai has gotten from introducking the new gen of Tibs. As for the VW GLI ^ cylinder, i love this car. Ground effetcs, low profile rims, and with the new metal flake paints VW is using they are just plain beautiful, imo anyways. Too bad they are so damn expensive. The GLI with a v6 and all the bells and whistles will cost about 24 g's.

heh......have you ever really got on it in the twisties? also, you have an I4 sonata, so i dont' know if that counts. all i know is i've driven a GTV6, ridden in an I4 03 tib, driven an 01 I4 tib, and have driven my V6 sonata for over 52k miles, and i'd take my sonata thru the twisties ANY day over the I4 tib, and i only might consider the GTV6 over my sonata because of the power, but if you know what you're doing, you sure as hell can have fun with a V6 sonata in the curves.

Don't worry about the reliability of the clutch. I've put over 450,000 miles on manual Hyundai's and never had any clutch problems...
