Re: Any one need a window motor diy?

This is just a brief description of how you do it.

Take door panel off.
Un bolt the few bolts holding the window motor in place.
Take off the 2 plastic covers that cover the holes that let u reach into the door. They ususaly have LH and RH on them.
Now you have to unplug that power wire that goes into the window motor.
This is the fun part that is very agravating.
To prevent having to undo the cables that hook the window to the window motor you have to try and pull the window motor down and out of the big hole that you previously removed the cover from.
It took me awile to get it but you just have to turn it diffrent ways untill it comes out... I also reconected the pwr to the motor and moved the window as i did it. It may be easier to remove the window all together. Its just 3 bolts and the window slides right out the top of the door.

Once you got the window motor to where u can take out all 4 screws on the motor go ahead and remove the screws.
Then pull the motor apart.
now the plastic piece that was inbetween the 2 parts of the motor is what you need to get to work on.
You will notice on that plastic piece(contact plate) there are 2 spring loaded contacts that are encased buy a square shaped casing with a slot on top to alow the wire that is attached to the contact to move freely. Once that contact is worn too much it can no long touch the window motor to give it power.
What keeps the spring from pushing the contact out far enough is the wire hooked to the contact because it is allready at the end of the slot ontop of the casing for the contact.
So all you have to do is take a drill with a really small drill bit and make the slot for the contact wire long... just be careful to leave some contact casing there to stop the wire so the contact doesnt just fall out.

I know this might be hard to understand but once you get the contact plate out and study it for a minute you will know exactly what trying to say. If you get stuck just call my cell 8032215548

Re: Any one need a window motor diy?

wait,

so what exactly were you doing with a drill in there? what is that supposed to accomplish?

i know i changed my window motor in about 20 minutes with no previous experience and no drilling or anything like that.

if i had to do it again i could probably do it in under 10 minutes

Re: Any one need a window motor diy?

he is not changing the motor, the DIY is a fix to the stock motor.

I just got one for $46 on ebay from Best Choice Auto Parts. It took eight days from Korea to get to my mailbox. I'm repairing the drivers side this weekend.

Re: Any one need a window motor diy?

Usualy when a window motor(or any electric motor) stops working its because the contacts have worn down so much that they no longer touch the part of the motor that needs power to work. So buy drilling the slot longer you allow the contacts to be pushed out further and make contact with the part of the motor that needs power.

The contacts are kind of like a flint on a cigarette lighter. As the flint is worn down a spring pushes the shortening flint up more and more so that it can still spark against the steel wheel that you sping with your finger. But eventualy the flint wears down so much that the flint no longer has enough pressure from the spring to make a spark. So to fix the lighter you would pull the flint out of the spring a little more.... hope that makes sense.

Any ways let me know if anyone else successfully fixis a motor.

Re: Any one need a window motor diy?

Got it. To expand upon what DoubleGlox said, here's what I did:

Removed door panel
Unbolted the three motor mount nuts
Also unbolted the bottom two window mount nuts (with the window up)
Maneuvered the motor assembly so that it hung out of the hole (that you remove the plastic panel from). Unbolting the bottom two window mount nuts makes this easier since you can push the mount into the door for more wiggle room.

Took apart the motor. Here's a pic of the worn-down motor brushes:

Since I'm into RC planes and such, I had a couple of unused DC motors with good brushes lying around. Simply snipped the old ones out, held in the brush spring and threaded the copper through the slot. Then soldered to the existing copper, et viola!

Forgot to mention that I took the plastic part that holds the brushes off the motor assembly to do this. If you're not good with small parts or don't have steady hands then I'd suggest you get a friend to help. This took me about an hour all said and done (I took my time).

Works like a champ, although it is noticeably louder than stock, but I think I can live with that.

Re: Any one need a window motor diy?

... sorry to bump this but i searched and couldn't find an answer... everwhere i read to do a window motor swap says to have your window up, well my motor went out and my window is over half way down. Is there a way to get this back up, and keep it up without the motor?

Re: Any one need a window motor diy?

hey guys, ok heres the deal, my drivers side window stopped working so i took it to the dealer and had them look at it and they told me that my window motor had a bad spot in it and wanted to charge me 300.00 ..........uummmmmmmmmmm.......NO! so last night I tore my window apart and removed the motor and pulled it apart and sure enough the brushes were almost completely gone, not even touching the motor. so I ripped apart an old sawz-all that I had laying around and robbed the brushes out of it lol they are huge so I took them to the grinder and ground them down to close to the right size and the finished with a file.....soldered them back in to the motor and put it all back together ,,,,..... tried the window and it worked for like the 1st time in months....just 1 problem - it works backwards LOL up=down and down=up.. what did I do wrong? any Ideas. please help

any old electrical tools will have brushes.....not the right size though, I just ground mine down to the size of the old ones..only longer. brushes are really soft ...about the same consistency as pencil lead. very easy to shave down I used a file to fine tune mine. beware it is very messy..LOL but is better than spending 300.00

can someone circle in the pictures above the "brushes" i'm not sure what u guys are talking about when you mention brushes

Re: Official Window Motor DIY thread...

Just made the attempt to fix my dead motor...worked well. The brushes weren't worn down really at all I guess they just weren't making contact with the motor itself because there was a bunch of dirt and carbon dust and grease in there so I cleaned all that out and now it works good as new. Unfortunately, I wound up with backwards wiring too. I think that's probably just do to the orientation of the motor shaft with the brushes. I'm not worried about that though...it's a small price to pay for a working window!!!:3_shiny:

Re: DIY: Repair Window Motor

lol... i ended up with backwards window too!!! i think it has to do with the direction you put the motor back in. One thing I noticed is that I put the side with the sticker on the outside (not on the same side as the bolts.. but I think it was the other way. Can anyone who does this next verify my theory before they put everything back together? =P thnx.
