oh man, what a bummer. at least its not that bad... even with the blurry pics, it looks like the car is definitely not totaled. just find a body shop who will work with you and not the insurace company.. you could probably get a CF hood, FL lights and everything.

Not sure which models got them first, but 03/04 it wasn't available (in US that is), I think 05-06 is was only available on SE (correct me if I'm wrong) and 07-08 its standard.
youre wrong, LOL. my 03's got it.
He is ok by the grace that he didn't hit anything else. But for instance the guy who hit the deer not too long ago head on. Passenger side deployed but not the driver's side.

There have been numerous posts where someone's crashed into something and had either one or none of the airbags deploy. Other cars I'm sure think that if you hit something at say, 50 mi/h and your head might run the risk of smashing into something in front of it ex: windshield, steering wheel, that it might be a smart idea to inflate some kind of bag in front of you to ease the blow or negate the movement.

I just don't like the idea that if I hit something head on, I may or may not be lucky enough to have my airbags deploy...all I'm saying.

and how much dirt "near the shoulder" can there be to completely stop all four wheels from allowing the ABS system to work? Just a question posed to speedcheeser because I could understand if he was on say, a full patch of ice and all four tires were unable to slow him down because all four tires or even 3/4 tires were on the patch of ice but damn....(run on sentences ftw)
the tib is an extremely safe car from a structural standpoint. its built damn solidly, and its heavier than most of the other sport coupes around. the problems is with airbag glitches, but in reality its more common than you think across the manufacturers. but theres no way to test them, is there? LOL. also, you have to remember that its safer to have the bags at a higher threshold than a lower one. it would be pretty bad if your airbags went off if you hit a pothole or bump too hard, huh? you'd probably get knocked out or at least stunned, and you are not in control of the car when that happens...

Well, as you can see it's only the left side, I was trying to pull more to the side so I could avoid hitting him, but obviously there wasn't enough time. As far as I know it was only visible on the right side, but I didn't really inspect the road much afterward, it very easily could have been all over the road. Either way, only 2 wheels slowing you down is only half the stopping force, and double the distance it takes to stop. Also, like I said, felt like the ABS was screwing up recently. It felt like it would engage, pedal would pulse, but tires would lock up. I'm not blaming this on mechanical failure or anything like that. But just having ABS doesn't mean you can't still run into stuff is all.

Damn dude...I thought these things had ABS? Or does that not matter on gravel? Just like airbags don't deploy when you hit a ****ing deer head on. Safe cars my ***.

But Glad you're ok.

On a side note, did the cop cite you with anything?? Like following to closely?? Cops have a way of making a bad situation worse.

Also damn, I might look into a T/A now. minor paint damage to your ****ed up front bumper...
Oh, and no. We didn't file a police report...thankfully.

I almost did the same thing tonight... some dumb *** ****ing *** hat decided to stop on an on ramp to the Long Island Expressway... 4 cars almost piled up, me being the last in line and I would have ended up under an SUV. Or at least my front right side would have smashed into his rear left. I just missed the SUV in front of me.

ABS stops the brakes from locking the wheels, it doesn't stop the wheels from not having traction on ice.

ABS does dick for you on ice for example. If the tires don't have traction it doesn't matter of they are locked or not.
ABS stops the brakes from locking....that's all. Brakes never touch the wheels in the first place. A brake pad presses against the brake rotor after the brake pad is compressed by the caliper piston.

And, wheels never have traction on ice, because they never come into contact with ice in the first place. Perhaps you mean tires.

So would people recommend leaving it at the dealership to get repaired, or would you advise against that and why? Thanks.
Yup. After my accident, I don't trust those other repair shops to fix body damage correctly.

Dealership will likely sublet the repairs, but they will do so to a quality shop.

Or, just go with a shop that the insurance recommends. That way, if something is not right, the insurance will give you a loaner so the car can get fixed correctly.

Yeah, I wound up meeting with my adjustor at Monument Chevy on 225, and he said that that was a guaranteed shop with them. So I'm just gonna take it there. They have a big collision center, and since it's a guaranteed shop, if something doesn't get fixed properly or overlooked after the work is done, insurance will pay to have it fixed again.

There was a junk yard around here that had a tib and I called about the front bumper and they would only sell the whole front end for $1800.. so that will give you some idea towards the price

sorry about your loss :(
Thanks, man. Yeah, I was just assuming something around $400 per panel, so $1200 there, lights for about $400, fogs for $200, so that's pretty close to what I was guessing. Then I guess however much they feel is necessary for the coresupport, labor, and paint, new battery, filter and whatever else was hurt down there.

actually damn thats real close to the damage on my tib

Image

I would guess 4k at least....your fender well is probably, well, more screwed up then mine

yup definitely 4k+

that's what mine came out to be and i had quite a bit less damage.. ie my headlights were fine etc.

im going to go out on a limb and say it's closer to 5000$ in damage/labor.

Yeah. Those are almost mirror images. Ha. But yeah, it looks like the fender well and the core support are pretty banged up. I'm with Teylix, thinking it's at least $5,000. The way my insurance guy said it, if it gets over 70% of their determined real world value (which is supposed to be really close to the NADA value, which I believe is no more than $10,000 right now) then they total it. So, that number is no more than $7,000. I doubt it will be that much, but it could be a lower bar then that. Guess we'll see...supposed to get the estimate today.

Wow, How did I not see this thread. I hope they get you fixed up pretty good. At least you'll get some new headlights out of the deal right? One at least. Keep us posted on whats going on.
I have no idea how you could have missed it...I even linked it in the Houston thread! But yeah, I get a call today about the estimate. I'm really hoping they'll do it right and try to give me 2 new lights since the passenger side has that haze and it would look bad up there. I was thinking if they were going to do the head lights I would try to get the FLs wired for 03s from SFR...but I don't think I wanna try to deal with waiting for shipping times and everything. I want this done as soon as possible. Quite honestly, I kinda hope they total it. I've been thinking a lot lately about trying to get into a Z. If nothing else, I just really want to get back into a drivable car. I don't want to pay the same amount I pay each month for the tib every week to be driving around in a pos Kia Rio. Kia Rio rental cars suck.
