Disintegrated Cat takes out Rear Cat - Help please! - Resolved

Update:
Thanks to:
valkare, ryanharp, The_Mo, alpinewhite, korndog517, dlanes, & Vind for the help...

due to time restraints though I did end up going new (though aftermarket). Not too bad on the price... but I would definitely have gone with members if time wasn't an issue, since they had the best prices hands down. Anyways... I'll be back in the drivers seat soon!

Again.... thanks everyone--

MODS... If you would so kindly :lock: this thread :3_winkthu

(2004 Tiburon V6 GT, 2.7L, 6 speed. Miles: 98,000 and some change - 1st and only owner)

So I posted over in the transmissions originally on my problem and ended up having my Tib towed to the closest stealer, which is 60 miles away. Got the call today saying that my radiator side cat (the very front one) has basically disintegrated and that it also took out my rear cat.

They quoted me $1900 to fix them ($900 just for the rear cat). They are also not really wanting to install aftermarket cats and pushing towards me to let them buy them and install them. But if I get the cats, they will check them out and IF (keyword -- IF) they okay them, they'll do the install for $400 plus tax.

I called a local shop here in town and they said that for the labor portion it would be $125-150, plus the cost of the cats. I can either buy them myself or they will see what they can get for aftermarket at a good price.

I've searched for cats and have found some in the $280 range plus shipping, but honestly, I have no idea which ones I need. The rear one is pretty simple, but the front one is confusing me. I'm finding them listed as "Front" and "Pre-cat Front". Can anyone please help me locate what I need or at least tell me what I need to search for. I don't want to order the wrong ones.

Money is tight, and I'm at about a $900 budget total. Right now I owe:

-- $90 to the dealer for the "diagnostic fee",
-- $180 to have it towed back to town,
-- $160 in labor that the local shop is going to do (roughly),
-- so that leaves me about $470 to work with towards the cats.

I have to have my car running ASAP, my son and I are moving to FL Nov 13th and can't reschedule it. I'd consider doing the labor myself, but I'm currently in an apartment, and don't have the space or the tools currently nor access to them.

Please... someone help!

Thanks in advance!

PS---
Don't really care if they are High-Flow... just as long as they work and get my car running again. I can always spend the cash later and upgrade when my budget is in better condition.

buy a set of OEM exhaust manifolds and y-pipe from here, install yourself. Or get aftermarket headers and install them. It's a very simple fix really... well... time intensive (header install), but do-able. And oem exhaust manifold set will probably run you ~$100 here (used of course) and if you're mechanically inclined and/or ambitious, then that's free.

Would love to do that, but in my current situation, I don't have the tools/space/equipment available, so I have go the route of having a shop do the work.

I've dealt with the shop a lot and they are really good with what they do, so I trust them.

Do the OEM exhaust manifolds and y-pipe come with the cats already?

Thanks--

yes, they do come with the cats already. Look through the for sale section and post up in the parts wanted section for a set of v6 stock exhaust manifolds and y-pipe. I'm sure you can find someone that has the parts you need, and maybe even locally. That will be infinitely cheaper than buying those parts from the dealer.

Cool, I will take a look... not sure what my shop will charge me to do the entire thing... but I can check.

But just in case... can someone help me out with names of what the very front cat and the rear cat would be called (for search purposes)?

Thanks and sorry for sounding stupid on this subject--

has them for $100 + shipping

And it's not the "cats" you're looking for but the exhaust manifolds. The cats are in the exhaust manifolds, and there is a 3rd cat in the y-pipe.

$40 + shipping... and Duke is a good guy I'd recommend buying from
Okay... so... here comes the blatant stupidity *puts on Fire-Proof suit* :m_hot: --

From what I understand, I need the headers (which includes the front cat and the "other" cat), and then what do I need to look for in order to get the "rear" cat?

Again... thanks for bearing with me.

--And Valkare... has anyone ever told you that you are the MAN.... I really appreciate you lending a hand!

haha yeah valkar is awesome.

but the stock manifolds actually have three cats.. two precats, and the main cat.
but the shop that said it'd be 1900 to fix it is trying to rob you blind... that is waaaay overpriced IMO...

That is what I though on the price... which is why I'm having it towed back to town.

But so if I understand correctly... all I would need to buy is the stock manifolds? Does that cover all 3 cats... or would I need the manifolds and more?

Again... thanks for bearing with me on this... without having my car here and being able to crawl under it... I'm really struggling to picture what everything is... and I'm really feeling stupid with all this (really, I'm not completely incompetent with mechanics... but just never dealt with the Tib's exhaust system).

actually, all you need to do is replace the rear cat. the car will function fine with even one cat. pick up a magnaflow cat from ebay and have it welded in. should cost you less than $120.

leave the one in the headers alone.

each exhaust manifold looks like this

"Pics removed to save space"

3 cats in total. The things wrapped in the silver heat shields are the cats.
NOW that's what I'm talking about... I have decided that you are no longer the MAN... You have officially been promoted the JEDI MASTER! :starwars:

I seriously can't thank you enough!

no worries. It really should be a fairly "cheap" fix. New cats are fairly expensive, especially OBD-II compliant cats like the OEM ones are, hence why the dealer wants a ton for them. Better off buying second hand or taking alpinewhite's suggestion.

You guys all ROCK!

I've got a PM for just the headers and 1 for the headers and ypipe. So looks like I'm in business. And the money I'm saving on the setup will more than compensate if the labor goes up a little.

If I can get a good price on the headers and ypipe would it make more sense just to go that route and deal with it all now? Would it be better to have both done with a 1400 mile trip coming up?

Thanks!

THHD

you might as well do it all at once.... the hardest part is technically going to be replacing the front exhaust manifold, but even that is "easy" per se. Replacing the y-pipe takes 15 minutes. Front manifold is probably an hour, hour 30 minute job.

I am selling stock exhaust manifolds w/cats as well. I took them off when I bought headers 2 years ago and only had about 37-38k

Thanks, but I think I have a line up on stock headers and y-pipes for $150, which I think is going to be the best route for me to go.

If things change though, I will check back with you and see if they're still available.
