Lads,
behold the 101 "How to convert your Tibby to get even-now-not-so-obvious still cutting tech of electric folding mirrors". The tutorial is fractured into four parts, subsequently updated in this very first post.
Unfortunately, to be honest, nowadays it is extremally difficult to obtain this mirrors, especially in GK spec (2001-September 2004). The most fortunate way would be to buy Kia Sportage folding motors and implement them into your OEM mirrors, info of which is also provided in this lecture.
DIY part one:
Required parts are:
1. control panel - it is tricky to give part number 'cuz there is added only one button WHICH can be transplanted even from UK panel as a second window lock button if you have certain manual skills;
2. two relays - 95225-29050 or 95225-38050 which replaced the latter for some reason;
3. both folding mirrors (7pin or 8pin), they don't actually have to be in your paint collor, the internals are most important;
*4. additionaly if you want autofold feature after removing the key you need two 12VDC NO 4pin waterproof relays to be hardwired into folding harness near the BCM.
So, to start with procedure, you need to determine two things:
1. inspect harness: the best way is to check whether you have wires no 12 "pink" and 20 "white" in BCM-FF connector and no 5 "white" in BCM-EF connector. That guarantees you have proper harness in doors. Disclaimer - even if you have Infinity feature, which requires different harness, you have to check it. There were four types of mirror harness: whith power mirrors (3pin), +electric heated (5pin), +electric fold (7pin), with integrated turn indicator - KDM only (8pin [gnd is from power mirrors]). If your do not have this wires, you need to rework your doors harnesess.
2. chceck BCM if you have connectors soldered into relays in back of BCM - unfortunately you will have to remove it from under the dash and solder them if you do not (which was not the case for me) - you need five connectors matching relays. This is the hardest part as connectors need to match with location on PCB board, then be in-line with dedicated holes in casing and solder not break after inserting the relays.
If you have BCM with connectors already, you can insert the relays after removing lower console cover without removing BCM from its resting place. You have the location where relays should be inserted:
DIY part two:
finally new windows control switch came. What is interesting, it bears the same part number as my own one.
1. This is a very simple part: just use a trim puller to remove the control panel from the driver's door trim. Then disconnect both plugs and disconnect the window switch in the control unit (it is held on six flanges, 3 on each side of the switch - visible in the photos on the edges). Then assemble everything in reverse order.
Now when you press the button you will hear the (folding) relay click when you press it, but only after you turn the key to ACC or ON (different from what the schematic manual says). Also after a few seconds you can hear the relay disconnecting. Another press activates the second relay (unfolding) with the same work order. This is intresting. My new panel has a lock button, even though it should be a folding mirror button. Fortunately, these are toggle buttons of the same type, differing only in the icon on them. When pressed, they return to the default position, unlike the window lock button (which is clearly a toggle button). This modifies my previous idea for automatically folding mirrors. Each press activates a separate transistor for a few seconds, so one additional NC switch driven by an ON signal would destroy the transistor. To enable the auto-fold function, the next logical choice would be to use the LOCK and UNLOCK signals sent by BCM-FF pins 6 and 8 as the switching signals and the FOLD SWITCH signal as the switched signal. I think this method was used by Shark Racing. This would use automatic folding and unfolding when locking and unlocking the car using the remote control. I'm afraid SR didn't say that closing the car with the lock knob will also activate the folding switches, so you need to add a third relay (NC) to disconnect this circuit in the ACC or ON state.
DIY part three:
Required parts are:
- left and right folding mirrors - if you have GK and folding options not in your paint color, then you have two options:
1. GK folding ones to convert your own mirrors;
2. F/L folding ones plus one set fitting you color.
- AMP 040 male connectors if you want to prepare your mirrors for future mod
1. First, you need to remove your own mirrors - starting with cover. PROTIP - it is easier if you fold your mirror first. Use prying tool:
to uncover three T30 screws per mirror. After unbolting them, carefully detatch mirror from housing (there is one plastic cap preventing from easy removal) and unclip the plug.
Following steps are about disassembly of folding mirror.
2. Remove plastic pin with phillips screwdriver. Then remove B/PAD.
3. Unscrew plug and remove all of connectors inside. Mark them to make reassembly easier. Use this tool.
4. Unscrew 3 revealed bolts to disconnect mount from mirror frame.
5. Next, remove glass - adjust glass in lower-center position, then using a small flat screwdriver unclip two clips connecting glass with bearing. Unclip connectors from heating feature (mark lower connector as it is a GND pin). Then you would see 4 screws holding frame to mirror housing. Unscrew them and your folding internals are ready to be implanted into your own mirror.
6. Reassembly your new mirror in reverse order. If you want to fill 8th pin in plug, add another black wire and crimp it into GND of heating feature to have negative terminal and using AMP 040 connector make new wire and add it into empty slot in plug.
Finally, after you put everything in correct order, you should see something like this:
Remember to test heating feature and readjust you mirrors glass.
