This morning around 2:30am I was coming home from a night out with the boys and I had a run-in with a deer. Deer > Me.
(For the record, I was not overserved and was well within the legal limits to drive)
I was just getting off the highway and hit the top of the offramp at about 55 when a deer bolted out onto the offramp about 15 feet in front of me. I pulled to the right as far as possible and hydroplaned causing the rear of my car to smack into the guardrail, while the deer bounced off the left side of my car (he wasn't injured). Because the rear of the car kicked out and hit the guard rail when I corrected this over-steer it spun my car 45 degrees facing the opposite side of the off-ramp. The car proceeded to hit a steep embankment head on at 45 - 50 mph, then bounce up the embankment and land on haystack barrier where I was stuck.
The airbags deployed when I hit the embankment, so when I landed on top of the haystacks I smacked my head off the windshield, spidering it.
I stumbled out of the car to assess the damage and felt dizzy, so I got back in the car. I fumbled for my cell but when I stood up and got out it had falled off my pocket where I clip it, and then I went unconcious. The most incredible part of the whole thing is that I remained in that spot for 5 hours. I woke up at 7:30, still stuck and undisturbed. I got out and found my cell on the ground and called my buddy to come with his jeep to tug me out (The car still ran!). I then drove myself to the hospital where I spent the next 3 hours being xrayed, cat scanned, etc.
I walked away from this accident with a headache and a mild concussion. I'm one lucky SOB. With the 3 panels being busted up, a bent rim, broken bumper, cracked windshield, severely frigged up front-end/steering system and the airbags being deployed, I'm fairly certain it will be totaled, though I'm not 100% on that, yet. The car actually doesn't LOOK all that bad, which is a plus if I end up keeping it.
Wish me luck! I'm not sure if I'd prefer to have the car fixed or get out of it completely but that's left to be seen.
