Hi all!

(first of all sorry for bad grammar i'm not 100% bilingual)

this is my first post here, my tib is driving me crazy!!

Last month my flasher relay crashed, the dealer was charging me 1000$ to fix this, hopefully i got the DIY flasher relay replacement on this site, and i made it! cost me only 50$ including the soledring kit.

this summer i have to change timingbelt + disk's and brake + handbrake wire (he broke for unkown reason and i use it everyday) ... i'm fine with this maintenance this is normal.
but now....

3 day ago i was on the road around 50kmh and aproaching a stop, trying to brake.. ho noes! the brake pedal is really tight and no more power steering and i noticed my motor shutted off, and all the electronic was fine in the car.... so, i restart the car 5sec later motor shutoff again! then i pull the hazard light and wait for a bit, i start the car again and he work fine, i go to a parking lot put the car on neutral and wait for 5min.... BAM the car shutoff again i was mad! i finally took the decision to drive home anyways and i got no problem on the way back. (note; -27 degree celsius outside and the car was 25% warm)

yesterday i bring the car to my motorman he read the p0420 code from the check engine (this code is up for 2 years) this is referring to front catalytic converter but, he don't think this part is defect because the car is not making any strange noise and everything seem really fine.

so, he installed a new air filter, cleaned the throttle body and a bottle of injector cleaner in my gas tank.

the car never shuttled off for 2 day now, but i'm very anxious.

he told me i might need to change the catalytic converter or the oxygen sensor,

He called his body part dealer and got the price on the oxygen sensor....
first one for 180$ and the two others for 290$ each!! this is outrageous!!
he told me i might need to go to the dealer to get a new catalytic converter because his part dealer don't have this part in the system, and he told me to not being surprised if the bill climb around 1000$ for a new cat ....

this is completly ridiculous this car is getting extremely expensive everything seems to cost like 3 time everything i came across.
(i dont mention the 450$ bill from the dealer last year to change 6 spark plug, because they are behind the motor)

now my question;
i told him i came across oxygen sensor on net for like 40$ and he laughed at me
but on this site car-stuff.com they are really cheap. does this sensor can work on my car?
i know i have 3 different oxygen sensor in my car whats the difference? and i see on site most of them dont have the plug... how do i put my plug on this one ? soledring? electrical tape?
and what about the lenght of the wire? i could use some help here please.

next question;
about the CAT ... if i need to get a new one where can i get one cheaper than the dealer? i see on some site. front and rear catalytic converter . what is the difference, whats the one i need to buy?

Tiburon 2003 GT V6 2.7, 6speeds

Thank you VERY MUCH !!!

Find a new dealer! $450 for changing the spark plugs is ridiculous, the manifold comes off in a few minutes.

bump for help

where in mtl you at dude?

if the car only bogs down when its still cold, it could be your cold idel bypass valve... short term fix would be install a block heater, and plug it in at night, and let the car fully warm up before you drive it.
good luck though!

Yea i noticed when it is very cold out the tib is not the most cooperative vehicle. I usually have to rev it up about 1000 Rpm's then i can put it in neutral and take my foot off the clutch w/o stalling.

my guess is - its the cold idol bypass valve. so when car is warming up your main throttle body valve isn't open enough for it to warm up quickly, and its a mechanical attachment that only you can open with 'gas pedal'. so thats why they have bypass so when the engine says hes cold, they by pass the throttle body. so if it not doing that i think your bypass valve is closed stuck. and throttle body cleaner in a can might not get into bypass and cleaning it enough unless you really stick it in there.. Ive had this problem on my girlfriends Honda, haven't had the problem on my tiburon yet, so I couldn't tell exactly!

Ok i got news.

I just came from my motorman.
And the exhaust system is definitely stuck somewhere,
i pumped to 3000rpm for 1min and he told me he could put his palm hand and completely block my exhaust.

so... later this week he will order new gasket for my catalytic converter and remove them for further test and see where its stuck in the pipe.

in the worst case i might need to buy 2 new catalytic converter and 4 oxygen sensor,
the catalytic are included in the manifold so.. this is going to cost a damn lot of money :(

plus he told me that universal sensor are real BS and i need to buy the oem one at 290$ each :(

the problem of catalytic stuck is probably because my car was made to run in the USA and i drive it in canada and the fuel are not the same and may cause the catalytic to jamm faster than usual.

does someone know in the quebec region (more precisely Montreal) a place to buy jobber catalytic for cheaper?

and the oem part of the O2 sensor so i could try to get a deal somewhere.

If you dont have smog checks where you live then a aftermarket system is good and less expensive. You can always go headers and then weld a racing cat inline also. As far as the sensors go I would buy the correct sensors rather than splice them. But I admit I am not very in the know when it comes to 02 sensors.

Sensors are cheaper than the price you were quoted !

hmm yes i dont understand my motorman told me these sensor are not oem but universal and the Ohm are different from the oem one,

i also know i have 4 sensor price range between 130 to 290$

on this site i can read left-top, or right-top this is confusing, how do i know which one is perfect for me, id rather use another description like.. front-upper, front bottom, rear-top rear-bottom?

another question;

IF you were me with a budget of 1000$ or so what would you buy to replace the front and back catalytic + the sensor? .. aftermarket? used from junk yard? new from dealer (for like 1500$)
i could read the forum for part selling but i'm not sure i'll buy the correct piece this way.

i read about after market but i'm unfamiliar with this term.

So you kind of find the cause, but the solutions are coming really expensive to you!

- The car is giving you code for cat, and the mechanic said exhaust is blocked, so I guess it's time to replace the cats. If OEM cats are coming at high price to you, you can get aftermarket cats (Magnaflow) and have them welded there.
- Oxygen sensors, I get them (OE part number) at $45/pc online from www.fourgreen.com, or you can contact our site sponsor Seoulfulracing (aka SFR) for anything you need from Korea (pm member Kdmguy).
- Spark plugs, hell $450?! you can get yourself some higher performance plugs (I'd recommend NGK X Iridium) for like $40 online and put them at a mecanic shop for 1/100 that price!

And if you think to do some performance upgrades like, you can replace the stock exhausts with headers and complete exhuast system (but this will be like $1500).

For any performance or aftermarket parts (exhaust , intake or whatever), we have list of great sponsors at NT, like Seoulfulracing, Arkspeedracing, Importshark, KJB, just to name few.

as far as the oxygen sensors, GET OEM sensors, not universal!!

a CHEAP fix for the catalytic converters is to knock them out... only if they are blocked!! you will still get a CEL code, but it will prevent it from clogging the exhaust..

I did this on my dads truck, when the catalytic converter failed the car would run worse and worse, and one day it would not even run at all and made a very weird noise..

How to do this, is to remove the headers and take a chisel and a hammer and just hammer all the ceramic stuff out.

you can also do this yourself and save any money at the dealer/garage... you need some basic tools and jack the car up, there are a couple DIY\s about headers on this site..

hope this helps, good luck!!

remember you will still have a CEL, possibly 2 if you do both heaers...
