does the tib have an interference engine?

hey guys. i jsut hit 60k miles yesterday. now i have some money to blow adn i ahve 2 options, either do the 60k mile maintenance and get my exhaust in a few months, or get my exhaust and get the 60k mile maint done in a few months. now i dont beat on the car to much, i mean occasionally (once or twice a week) ill shift at around 5500 when im having fun, but thats it.
so my questions are:
one, does the tibby have an interference engine or not? that would be one deciding factor.
second, how common is it for the timing belt on a 4 cyl tib to actually snap before atleast 80k miles? like i said i dont really beat the sh!t out of my car at all.

thanks in advance guys

Re: does the tib have an interferece engine?

yes its an interference engine. The manual says 60,000 is recommended, but california is recommended for 100,000. I think it has to do with the milder, warmer temperatures, although I wonder why they wouldn't recommend FL etc. as well for that interval...

Because it's very humid over here, and humidity can lead to rot, after an extended period.

Regardless, I changed mine at 85k and the belt showed very minor wear. I do have a V6, but I have heard from a couple master hyundai techs that you're typically fine until 100k, but it becomes risky to wait longer than that.

thanks for all the input guys. as for the maintenance, SFR sells the package for $200 with the timing belt, water pump, etc and hyundai wats $500 to install and a small shop near my house wants $380. is it worth it to go to hyundai to have the timing belt stuff done?

Depends on the shop, but I almost never go to the dealership since they always charge more. If the shop backs up their work (which most do) then save yourself some dough and have them do it.

But yeah, definitely don't wait. Even if your timing belt is still in good shape it's not worth taking the chance.

We just had a local S/C'd tib's timing belt give out, after he put in a racing block and did massive amounts of work to the car. I just did my timing at 60k miles, and would recommend you do the same.

When it comes to preventive maintenance, it shouldn't be overlooked, especially if you're talking about adding aftermarket parts, no matter what type. Sure the belt may last another 20k miles over 60k, but would you consider driving 10k miles on a single oil change because you were able too? Do the work now, free yourself from a potential disaster later, and get that exhaust on when you don't have to worry about what should be done to the car now. :3_pimatyo

The belt will still come with that sticker. I was sure to affix it on the cover so I could remember when I did it.

Any licensed mechanic should be able to do this. There's nothing special about the tib compared to other cars with the timing belt.

ok heres the deal, first, thanks for hte pictures Tibbyking! but that cover in those pictures, my car doesnt have. there just 3(i think) belts there. theres one on top slanting down towards the back of the car, one udner it slanting the otehr way, and one wayyyy down. nto sure which is which, but they all look kind of new. maybe a little less tehn 1/4 inch think, teeth all feel intact, not alot of ware that i can see.
