Hood Scoops

I want to put a small to medium sized hood scoop on my '03 tib. It would be just for looks. Questions:

1. Can I use the existing hood and buy the scoop and attach it myself? If so, is that the best way to go?
2. Who sells hood scoops online (looking for options in style)?
3. Instead of adding the hoodscoop so my existing hood should I try to find a hood made for the tib with a scoop already in place.
4. With an attached hoodscoop as mentioned in question #1 would I have to take it to a body shop to get it molded to the hood? If so, would they have to sand down the hood and repaint to entire hood?

Please also respond with any general feeling towards hood scoops. I really like the look but I'm not sure of which style to use. Thanks in advance!

um, a scoop that doesn't do anything? kinda stupid don't you think? were u thinking wrx style? or reverse? go onto any of those ricer sites and you can buy scoops...apc probbly has it. a bunch of online stores should have it. pep boys mite have it. yes, you should get it molded if you do plan on doing this. yes they will have to sand the area down and paint it over...hopefully you will cut the hood and attach it that way...as to make it slightly functional...but yeah, if you don't mold it it will look kinda bad. should you do it? sure, if you want to. will members on this site like it? i would say 95+% would hate you forever, but just like you, they are entitled to their opinion. whatever you do, good luck and have fun...don't let others tell you what to do

so do you want to glue it on or use duct tape?

I dont think they make one out of unpainted aluminum or one with built-in LEDs but you can check

well it would be rice if it's a fake scoop that does nothing for the car...and i can't seem to envision that being nice on a tib...when i get home i mite try a fast photoshop of it to see how it'll loook

He said looks, not performance. I couldnt tell you where to get one, but I have seen the ones that just use 3M double sided tape and stick on to your existing hood, and I would not put something like that on the TiB. Seriously you a better off looking into getting a hood designed with a hood scoop molded into it. It will certainly look a hell of a lot better and you will get the added benefit of more air flow for a slightly cooler motor.

I have no problem punching a hole in the hood to let some air into the engine bay, but by non functioning I meant that it would not be responsable for an vital air induction.

I agree. There is no way I would just tape something on my hood with 3M tape.

The only thing I'm concerned about is the price and matching of paint on the hood. Would they have to sand down and repaint the entire hood or just the area around where they would mold the scoop?

theyed prob just paint around that area and blend in the paint with the paint thats on the hood already

well...black and silver is the easiest to blend...at least from what i've learned from mike (italia) so unless you have those colors, you may want to do the whole hood...plus you can get a better paint job the famous crap paint job hyundai uses anyway

I want to put a functional hood scoop on my car too.
I would completely repaint the entire hood.
Other people have done it nicely.

How do you get the image to display in the post?

the first hood was made that way and the other two are obviously done in a shop..looks crappy....go buy a vented hood

please make it functional. if you're gonna spend the money to put it on properly and have paint blended and everything, just place it in a proper spot and cut out a little metal... might as well make it useful if you're doing everything else. another reason i don't like mustangs: the new ones with the "hood scoops" are just a scoop on top and the intake is just a plastic inserts (like the plastic inserts we have in our gills)... no functionality.

since nobody else wants to answer his questions, i will...

Yes you can put a hood scoop on the stock hood. Best bet is to find a scoop from another car (300zx, subaru legacy or WRX, 4 runner, or another car). Some will require welding to get to fit, others can just be molded on. It's best done by a body shop, especially to get the paint matched properly. JC Whitney also has hood scoops that they sell.

I actually had a scoop on my car from a yugo. I cut a hole in the hood, drilled 2 holes for the mounting bolts, and put it on. Directly below the scoop was my intake with a heat shield.

My friend's car with a subaru legacy hood scoop (was welded and smoothed in by a body shop)

different car, same scoop (also molded and smoothed by a body shop)
