I am sick of my sloppy shifting, after taking my ’04 GT V6 6sp to the dealer they said “nothing is wrong…we test drove it 4 miles,” I knew it would help to check out the shifter bushings. Well our stock bushing are crap!! Soft semi-hollow rubber junk. I did find out that the ’05 and current replacement stock bushings have been upgraded to SOLID soft rubber crap. Also, Hyundai told me that I couldn’t buy the bushings without buying the entire shifter linkage cable, @ $100.ooeach. NICE!

I have to get some nice solid urethane bushings. I posted asking for help and found none, http://www.newtiburon.com/forums/showthread.php?p=673025#post673025

I searched high and low for someone making Tiburon 6sp shifter cable bushings. I looked at many pics of bushings and even contacted machine shops hoping to have some brass or roller bearing bushings machined. NO LUCK
I came across Kartboy’s site http://www.allwheelengineering.com/basket/catalog.cgi?query_net_id=kartboy&query_class=KB-E006
and screamed “My, those EVO BUSHINGS look exactly like mine.”
I contacted Tom at Kartboy and he hooked me up with ½ a set to try for fitment….Total fit. I ordered the set and popped them in…they rock!!, literally rock solid precise shifting.
So, here is how you do it:

1. Order some Kartboy EVO SHIFTER CABLE BUSHINGS (Yeah, I know we have tibs, not evos, they are exactly the same size bushings) $30.00+shipping($3.00-priority) man shipps hella quick!!!

2. Get tools: Ratchet, extension, 10mm socket, Needle-nose pliers, and a Phillips head screwdriver.

3. Unclip the air box lid and remove the top lid and air filter.

3. Unclip the air box lid and remove the top lid and air filter.

4. Now use the 10mm socket and extension to unbolt the 3 marked bolts at the bottom of the air box.

5. You will see the 2 shifter cables where they connect to the shifter arm on the trans. The smaller bushing cable is sort of behind and underneath the larger one (see red circles).

6. Remover the pin or key from the armature shaft with the needle-nose pliers and then remove the washer. Remove the bushing from the eye, by pushing it up.

7. Now replace the bushing with you spiffy amoeba green bushings. Place ½ on the armshaft and press the shifter cable eye onto it, then press in the other or top bushing and squeeze the whole thing together nice and tight. Replace top washer and pin

8. Repeat step 7 for the smaller bushing (a bit more difficult to reach)

9. Reassemble air box and test-drive

Please note: I am not a trained mechanic, english professor or skilled typer or poster, I just wanted everyone to check this little mod out.

The whole process took 20 mins to do.
When I was done the car shifted worlds smoother(I also have the B&M sts installed). It is also much easier to really speed shift when in manic -driving mode!

Hope this helps

I have no exp. with the 5sp but I compared the 5&6sp on HMA webtech and they both looked to have 2 shift cables. So if they are the same size eyes on the shift cable, then it should work.
I can't imagine hyundai making 2 seperate shift cable sets one for the 5sp and one for the 6sp.
So, I'm gonna give it a 92% guess that its the same.

Also, 5sp owners look at the pics of the shift eyes and confirm.

I have a 5sp, just tryed to do the DIY, and found that I don't have the linkage where the 6sp have it. It seems that its in a much different setup. I took some pictures.

Re: DIY Kartboy Urethane Shifter Linkage Cable Bushings Install

today, I'll see if I can take off the set of bushings and see if they are the same size. I don't have jackstands now that I live on my own, and the way these are positioned it might be easier to get to them from underneath the car (just a guess). But I'll try and go out today and do my best.

Re: DIY Kartboy Urethane Shifter Linkage Cable Bushings Install

Very interesing, I'm gonna have to do this. I've got an 03 GT 6 speed and B&M STS and that made a lot of improvement in the feel of shifter. Maybe this will add some more.

Its worth doing, big improvement, in additon to the improvement of the B&M.

We need some 5sp pics!

I can't wait to see how much other 6sp owners like these bushings!

Any word or pics of the 5sp set up?
I looked at ravensfan's car today, he has a 5 speed. The shift linkage/bushings didn't look anywhere close to being the same as the 6 speed....

Re: DIY Kartboy Urethane Shifter Linkage Cable Bushings Install

how do they look?

Are they both the same size? The 5sp bushing looked kinda like they were both the small bushing on the 6sp, instead of one big and one small???

If this is true then 5sp owners could email tom at Kartboy and just order a set of 4 bushings(2pcs for each cable).

The small bushings from the EVO/TIB set are item KBU-019???

hope this sheds more hope for 5sp peeps

Re: DIY Kartboy Urethane Shifter Linkage Cable Bushings Install

i just put these on my 6 spd and they do make a differance the shifting feels cleaner also my timing with relashing the clutch and the gas is better..... i have the stock shift still on but it feels much nicer.... reverse is alittle stiff to get into, but over all i like the improvement.....thanks for the DIY

Re: DIY Kartboy Urethane Shifter Linkage Cable Bushings Install

I got these installed today. These were extremely easy to put in and already having the stock air box taken out (I have an Injen SRI) made things even easier. These go along really well with the B&M sts. Like novazer0 said, they make reverse a little stiff to shift into, but they did improve the shifting feel. The improvement isn't night and day or anything, but I think it's more than worth the $33.

Re: DIY Kartboy Urethane Shifter Linkage Cable Bushings Install

Got mine today and installed them in about 45 min. I still have the stock shifter and i think it makes a huge difference! The shifter is a little bid stiff now though. Might put some grease on there or something. MUCH better shifting through the forward gears, although reverse is harder now.

Re: DIY Kartboy Urethane Shifter Linkage Cable Bushings Install

Glad you peeps like them. Tom from kartboy shipps hella fast too! I just threw on an old momo air shift knob, much better then the plastic stock shifter knob. I hope to have a VHR clutch set up in the car by the end of this month....then w/ the new clutch + B&M sts + new Kartboy bushings + momo knob =wholesome shifting goodness!
