my buddy was sayin that the car should always be in a gear according to murphy's law. So his car is always in a gear.
when i drive sometimes i drive in neutral so i can get some free run out of the car, n when im at the stop sign its in neutral till i see the amber light than shift to one.
i wanted to know r both aproaches correct or which one is better than the other one

it is illegal to coast around in neutral, and it doesnt save on gas..so its pointless....when im at a stop light i leave it in neutral so as to not **** with the clutch......when i park my car i always put the e-brake on and leave it in first gear...

if you are doing this stuff in an auto..well then..thats just plain gay

Keep it in gear at a stop light.. If you're the first at a stop light and someone bumps while you in neutral, you might end up drifting into the intersection

why? arent you pressing the brake when you are at a light?or are you just sitting there with it in first and the clutch pulled in? cause if you are, you will just coast into the intersection anyways

stay off of the clutch unless you need to use it, when you are waiting at a light you SHOULD be in neutral as to not add wear and tear on the clutch

holding in the clutch at a stop light doesn't wear the clutch

my point is you shouldnt be using the clutch when you dont need to. when you are stopped at a light you dont need the car to be in gear when the light turns green is when you should be in gear. what is having the car in gear going to do for you when you get rear-ended you are most likely going to let out the clutch some and probably push yourself out further into the intersection. anyway its not a good habit to ride the clutch, thats all im saying.

why would you have to have the car in a gear when you get rear ended? wtf if you're not on the brakes and you're stopped, that would mean you're basically in neutral and you'll get moved just as far. I was rear ended while stopped and in first gear, i was on the brakes so i didn't go anywhere really and i didn't stall out. But usually if i'm tired i'll through it into neutral and let off the clutch, it takes much less energy to just keep your foot on the brakes :p i dont care what's "right or wrong"

You should always be in a gear while the car is in motion and in neutral when stopped.

That's not true Malik...you will get better gas mileage in ANY car if you coast to a stop while in neutral because the RPM's will drop below 1k when you put it into neutral and drift to a slow stop. Sure its not much, maybe a few blocks of coasting with "free gas" but they do add up if you do this consistently on a full tank. I have an auto and do this whenever I can, to answer your question Razzle: the only time it will hurt your auto tranny is when you decide to throw it into neutral because you are going to come to a stop but don't actually come to a stop and THEN put it back into drive...you can pretty much tell that the engine doesn't like it because there is a slight jalt when shifting WHILE moving at a decent speed (around 20+) from neutral to drive. So basically only throw it into neutral and coast for the "free gas" when you are for sure coming to a stop so you get the benefits w/o the wear & tear on the engine.

Hope this helps,
-Mike

i am going to have to say "negative".... your gas mileage will not increase enough for you to notice.....the only way you would notice is if you drive your car like an ass all the time and then you start doing the whole neutral coast thing...but, once again..coasting around in neutral is illegal in most (if not all) states...its illegal for a reason

And why is coasting illegal? I actually never heard of this law before? What is the point of making this illegal?

coasting in neutral will increase the wear on your brakes.

coasting in neutral is freely coasting, whereas if you where in gear, the engine would naturally slow you down some.

Let the engine slow you down a little, so you dont have to ride your brakes for 2 blocks...THEN at the stop light its ok to put in in neutral WITH the brake on. I do this, becuase I'd rather just hold the brake in, than hold the brake AND the clutch in.

If the car is in gear, the clutch has to be pushed in, thereby effectively the car is in neutral. The bottom line is, you should always have the break on, or the car in park (auto) when at a stopsign/light.
who the hell would put their car in park at a light in an auto? I just keep the brake pedal down until I can start moving. I only put it in park if I know I'll be sitting in the same spot for a long period of time, like the McDonalds drive thru line.

and even if coasting is illegal, how the heck would a cop know if you're doing it?

the same way a cop knows that you have an aftermarket part under your hood..they dont..its just a law....
