Well i have a 04 with Infinity sub and speakers. I do not know if the speakers are amped or not. Can anyone tell me? I believe i have an amp, but is that for the speakers, or for the sub?
Ken
if it is like the 03 they are amplified, and the amp is for the doors, tweeters, rears, and sub.I replaced the amp to the fronts and center and used the headunit to power the rears.

not to sound like im tooting Kenwood's horn, but for flip out displays i think they have the best designed mechanicals.

the difference is the way the scereen pulls in.
most everyone uses a pushout-then - tilt up setup. but kenwood slides out on a tray then tilts up and the tray pulls back. this makes the motors last longer and the screen wont sag as much.

Clarion and eclipse have some nice double DIN units, but i have not gotten to play much with those...just heard some good feedback.
Kenwood does make excellent head units. Between me and 2 of my friends, we've gone through 4 or 5 of them (and one of them used to be a Pioneer brand whore). Get one of the excelons and you'll be golden. I haven't played with them much, but I've heard good things about Eclipse stereos.

$1000 should be an ok budget for what you're looking at. For the subs, a 10w3 is about $200 on the avg. - high side. I've found them as low as $150 before. If you're only going to run 1, the JL 250/1 would be enough to push it, but not to its fullest potential. 500/1 turned down a little can take care of it. Also, think about checking out Memphis Audio amps. Their amps are a little cheaper, smaller, and still pretty good quality.

If you have the Infinity factory stereo, you should already have an amp for your speakers. I know for sure the 03s do. I wouldn't worry about buying a multi channel amp for your door speakers until you eventually replace them.

So what ya'll are telling me is that i should get a headunit, a 10" sub, and box, as well as a amp to power the sub? So now what kind of box do i get? Can i remove my stock sub, or should i leave her in?
Ken

Yeah since it is winter out, and i am off tonight i guess i will sit on NT on a saturday night, how pathatic.

while I do agree that JL is an excellent brand to go with, the setup I listed out for you is perfect for your goals. JL I think is overkill for you and your needs. If you do plan on upgrading down the road, JL would be fine but theyre products are way overpriced.

if you want sound quality --> image dynamics

http://www.imagedynamicsusa.com/products_page.php?id=id&type=sub

and buy from here
http://www.cardomain.com/item/IDSID10V3D2

10" will run nicely, put it in a 0.5cu ft sealed box and power with at least 300wrms.

headunit .. usually anything from pioneer, alpine, eclipse

i didnt real the whole thread, but if you are going for overall sound quality.. get new components and sound deaden your car.. raammat by raamaudio works really well for this application

my setup!! (see sig)

i have such amazing sound quality.. i cry everytime i hear a ballad.

but then my shiz also hits hard i think my back window is going to break :D even though im underpowering my subs... the car audio guy in chico said my car hits as hard as 12s with twice the power... my hurts literally hurt and i have to turn it down or turn non-fader output down... but i love that i still have NO distortion.. just sound quality while that's happening.

headunits: eclipse, pioneer, alpine
subs: JL, ascendant audio's assassin, RE, plenty others
components: rainbow, high end focals, CDT, and crystal ssc6
rears: dont bother.. save money and upgrade others

i personally got my HU, amps, and subs for 1000$ but that's because i got a great deal.

id recommend 200$ components, $250 head unit, $200 sub(s), 400$ amps... well then you need a box which you can build yourself or have a shop do it for $150+. however i see that puts you over your limit by 200 heh.. ah well just estimate values anyways =P ah yeah and you need deadening.. if youre super crazy about sound quality then youll need that.

i dont want to pick out a full on system for you but i did give you a good guiding direction for what you should be looking for.

some of these brands you will not find in your local shop. but rest assured rainbows are TOP-notch components as well as CDT audio and cyrstal ssc6 will give you midbass like nobody's business with no distortion.

gl on doing your setup!

They're expensive for a reason. You're pretty much getting what you pay for in this environment. For SQ you really can't do any better than JL. If he was just going for something to rattle his car apart, then lesser subs become more viable.

Anyhow, take the factory sub out. You don't want 2 different subs playing at the same time. For your box, I'd go sealed.

you definitely can get better than JL focal trumps JL every time. as does macintosh, nakamiti (SP?) eclipse, etc... So far I have been the only one who has given the original poster a setup with a price breakdown that will keep him within budget and yield more than what he is asking for. can no one else give him a different option?

Focal and MacIntosh are definitely better than JL as far as components go. But for subs, I don't know. I'll admit, I haven't listened much to the Focal sub yet.

Well bobditts thank you for all your help, your system sounds like a winner to me. My brother has an alpine head unit and it works pretty good for him. So i think i will check those out, a few guys i know have them as well. Ok so for a box do you think that box the stock sub comes in would be ok? I highly doubt it will be, but it looks pretty clean in the corner.
Ken

I think the stock sub is an 8" and you want atleast a 10". all depends on how good your fabrication skills are if you want to squeeze a 10" in there. you might be better off gutting that whole aread and building a fiber glass enclosure.
I've heard of people modding that box to fit a 10", but it's not really worth it in my opinion. Plus, it looks to be a little small volume wise.

Anyhow, he's right. If you're willing to try, you should look up the fiberglass DIY and put a box in there. (Only problem with that is it will be pretty hard for you to get up the proper volume.) You can kinda estimate it I guess. Otherwise get a standard sealed box. Or, if you have extra cash lying around, have an audio shop custom build you one to fit there in place of the factory one, just be prepared to pay a couple bills.

Ha, ok. Several people have glassed custom boxes to go in there. I'm sure you can find someone who's done it to give you some pointers or something. I've also heard of one guy who carried a blanket in his trunk anyway just folded it up and put in there. You could probably also just buy a couple square feet of auto carpet and get it in there to make it look better. Oh, one guy I know glassed a sub box in the opposite side, and built an amp rack that mounted on the side where the sub was, and he somehow even used the the stock brackets that held the sub in place to hold that up. I'll give you his name in a lil bit so you can PM him and see if he can tell you how much is involved.

Ok, PM b-dirty.
