well i change my oil for the first time on the tib, and it leaks one drop every 2 or 3 days from the drain plug bolt. i went to the dealer and they said i need to replace the crush washers everytime. so i bought some. just wonderin if you guys replace those everytime. also, do you torque the crap out of that bolt. the dealer did my changes before, and that bolt was on there good (found out they use an impact wrench) so maybe just torque the crap out of it first before drainin my oil?

Hmmm. No, you shouldn't need to replace the crush washer every time UNLESS you over-torque it...in which case it tears and does not seal properly.

Impact wrench on a oil pan?! No f*ckn' way! If a new crush washer doesn't fix the problem, some one owes you a new oil pan, or a new drain bolt. When you changed the oil, did the bolt unscrew easily, after you got it loose, if not the threads are going if not already gone. Just to be fair, what kind of impact wrench did the dealer use, because in new assembly, impact wrenches, with adjustable torque settings are used for speed.

The only cars i've seen use crush washers are Nissan. If you are indeed using a crush, then yes it needs to be replaced every oil change.

It should be just an aluminum gasket/washer though. Thats what every Hyundai ive seen uses. And it shouldn't need to be replaced every oil change, but they do go bad. If its leaking change it out, its a cheap little thing. I've got tons of them laying around.

Yep, same here.

I bought a year's worth of Hyundai filters, and there was a washer taped to the top of each box.

You probably don't need to replace it every time, but I usually do.

And they're not that cheap. My local dealer charges about $1.00 for each one. If your dealers are taping them to the filter boxes I'm sure they're charging you for them.

And you shouldn't "torque the crap" out of the drain plug bolt. I believe spec is around 30lb/ft anyone confirm that?

Funny story. I've done all the oil changes personally since I bought my Tib and never replaced the original washer. It never leaked.

1 week ago I took my Tib to the dealer for the 30K service and for the 1st time I let them change the oil. They replaced the washer (it was listed in the paperwork ) and guess what? It dripped when I got it home. Go figure.

$1.00 ?? Wow what a rip, thats a dealership for ya. If i sold all the ones i have laying around for 50 cents i'd be amazed.

It's not just the dealers though. I bought a bunch from LowSonoma recently, and he sold them to me at his cost--which was still 60 or 65 cents each.

But yeah, it can't cost them more than a few pennies to produce those things.

Hyundai used to use the crush washers, but switched to the aluminum ones probably 3 or so years ago. The old part # was 21513-21000. The new aluminum ones are 21513-23000. $1 sounds right, since Hyundai's list price is $0.98. If a walk in customer buys a filter, they get one for free. Since I do give quite a large discount on parts through this site, I'm not making enough on the filter to cover my cost on the washer to just be giving them away, therefore, I sell them at dealer cost, which is $0.65. Hyundai probably makes 100 of them for that 65 cents they charge me for one, but I can't control that.

As far as changing them every time. It's up to you. Our service department changes them every time. It's a small price to pay for the added hassle when the car comes back for an oil leak. We get a couple cars in the shop a week complaining of oil leaks, when it was just the washer leaking because Jiffy Lube or whatever other crappy quick change place didn't change it.

wtf are they doing using an air gun on an oil plug!? it might be okay to use a 1/4" air ratchet or gun, but it's still ridiculous.
