I've always wondered what causes the transmission to whine like that on a rally car but you never really hear it on a stock car... I think its pretty cool and wish my car made that noise. haha I know its stupid but it would be awesome to have my car do that. my friends probe has a slight whine from the tranny but nothing like the rally cars.

haha nice one, I admire those drivers. most people wouldn't be able to handle themselves gettin 15 feet of air or going around a tree lined corner at 60+ mph

The "Rock Crusher" you are referring to is the GM Muncie M22 Heavy Duty 4-speed. It got the "Rock Crusher" name not for being strong (which it was) but for the sound it made while driving. The trans was so loud and sounded like it was crushing rocks.

But even the M22 didn't have "straight cut" gears (0-deg). They were "straighter cut" as the angle of the helical gears (20-deg) was less than standard gears (30-deg).

My ranger tranny sounds like a rock crusher. In fact just about every part of the truck has some kind of crunching sound.....lol

Its Hockey. You sir, are a sad excuse for a Canadian....

To answer your question about whining in rally cars tho, the reason you hear rally cars transmissions whine is due to the fact that they have what called "straight cut" gears. Stock cars do not have this setup becuase it is very noisy. But its an ideal set up for a race car because its a much stronger engagement between gears. However, if you have a manual tranny, put your car in reverse and give it some speed. You will hear that whine that you are talking about. THis is due to the fact most reverse gears in street cars are straight cut. "spiral bevel" gears are just a luxury thing.
why would you post to a thread that died more than a half year ago?

holy crap, how long has solo been back?

and I learned something today... lol

the only question i have is why would a stronger transmission ruin the streetability of the car? wouldn't it just mean the tranny can handle a butt load more power?

No whining sound in reverse for me, only the whistle of a turbo and the grumble of an open downpipe. Anywho, straight cut gears= no more dd tib. Whats with the stupid a$$ threads? 1st the rhd conversion thread and now this........

Its not that I want it for the sound I was simply asking why it sounded like that and I want the gears because in the 4th? post he said it is made for high horsepower cars... I plan on turbo charging my car soon and want it to be as bullet proof as possible. I didnt think that was rice but think what you want.

straight cut gears have no buisness in a street car plain and simple there are no straight cut gears made for the tibby so ur looking at least 5-7grand to have a set made for u it is possible to get the made but a very big wasted of money if ur not putting down over 600hp or if u have a race car that u take to the track and beat the living crap outta every day my buddy has a wrx with str8 cuts in it not a fun car to drive on the street but amazing at the track
